PURPOSE: As part of the prospective, non-interventional OCEAN study, the ORCA module evaluated physicians' spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) image interpretations in the treatment of diabetic macular oedema (DME) or macular oedema (ME) secondary to retinal vein occlusion (RVO). METHODS: Presence of intraretinal fluid (IRF) and/or subretinal fluid (SRF) was evaluated independently by physicians and reading centres (RCs) on 1612 SD-OCT scans of 133 patients diagnosed with either DME or ME secondary to RVO. Agreement between physicians and RCs was calculated for both cohorts individually and as a combined ME cohort. Physicians' treatment decisions were analysed related to the results of the OCT-evaluations. RESULTS: For the combined ME cohort, presence of IRF/SRF was recorded by RCs in 792/1612 (49.1%) visits and by physicians in 852/1612 (52.9%) visits, with an agreement regarding presence or absence of foveal fluid in 70.4% of cases. In 64.4% (510/792) of visits with RC-detected foveal IRF and/or SRF no injection was given. In 30.3% of these visits with foveal fluid no reason was identified for a 'watch and wait' approach indicating possible undertreatment. BCVA deterioration was seen in a quarter of these eyes at the following visit. CONCLUSION: Despite good agreement between physicians and RCs to recognize SRF and IRF, our data indicate that omitting injections despite foveal involvement of fluid is frequent in routine clinical practice. This may put patients at risk of undertreatment, which may negatively impact real-life BCVA outcomes. TRIAL REGISTRATION: www. CLINICALTRIALS: gov , identifier NCT02194803.

Background: To investigate the correlation between retinal vascular changes and ICA stenosis by measuring retinal vessels using full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) and intelligent image recognition. Methods: This research selected patients who were admitted to the Vascular Surgery Department of Quzhou People's Hospital from January 2018 to December 2020 and were preparing for Carotid Artery Stenting (CAS). Participants were divided into two groups: without ICA stenosis (Group 0) and with ICA stenosis (Group 1). A total of 109 cases were included in the study, with 50 cases in Group 1 and 59 cases in Group 0. Vascular images of superior temporal zone B of the retina were obtained by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). The edges of retinal vessels were identified by FWHM. Each vessel of all subjects was measured three times with the FWHM, and the average value was taken to obtain the retinal arteriolar lumen diameter (RALD), retinal arteriolar outer diameter (RAOD), retinal venular lumen diameter (RVLD), and retinal venular outer diameter (RVOD),Arterial Wall Thickness (AWT),Venular Wall Thickness (VWT)=(RVOD-RVLD)/2,Arteriovenous Ratio (AVR) = RAOD/RVOD. Results: We found that compared to Group 0, Group 1 had smaller RALD (P < 0.001) and RAOD (P < 0.001), and wider RVOD (P < 0.001), with thicker VWT (P < 0.001). When compared with the contralateral eye in Group 1, the ipsilateral eye exhibited even smaller RALD,RAOD and AVR (P < 0.001, P < 0.001, P < 0.001). After CAS, the RALD,RAOD and AVR in Group 1 increased (P < 0.001, P < 0.001, P < 0.001),while the RVLD and RVOD decreased (P < 0.05, P < 0.001). Our research reveals a significant correlation between retinal vascular changes and internal ICA stenosis. Conclusion: Utilizing SD-OCT in conjunction with the FWHM,we achieved a non-invasive, intelligent, stable, and precise acquisition of data pertaining to retinal vessels. These findings underscore a significant correlation between alterations in retinal vascular structure and the presence of ICA stenosis, as demonstrated by our research.

La neurorretinopatía macular aguda es una condición rara con patogenia microvascular. Se presenta con un inicio agudo con escotomas paracentrales correspondientes a lesiones paramaculares evidentes. Los avances en las imágenes multimodales permitieron caracterizar este trastorno de retina y crear nuevos conceptos. Serraf, en el 2013, identificó dos formas por medio de la tomografía de coherencia óptica dominio espectral: el tipo 1 conocido como maculopatía paracentral aguda media en la cual se observa una banda hiperreflectiva en la capa nuclear interna, y el tipo 2 en el cual la banda hiperreflectiva se ubica en la capa nuclear externa, que involucra la zona elipsoide y la zona de interdigitación con el epitelio pigmentario de la retina. Hasta el momento no existe cura; pero se puede actuar sobre los factores de riesgo. Por ser una condición rara y por no existir reportes hasta el momento en Cuba es que se presentan a continuación dos pacientes con cuadros clínicos similares de estas dos variantes; concluyendo la importancia que presentan las imágenes multimodales como medio auxiliar diagnóstico(AU)


Acute macular neuroretinopathy is a rare condition with complex pathogenesis and microvascular cause. It appears with acute onset, with paracentral scotomas corresponding to obvious paramacular lesions. Advances in multimodal imaging made it possible to characterize this retinal disorder and to create new concepts. Serraf, in 2013, identified two forms by spectral domain optical coherence tomography: type 1, known as paracentral acute middle maculopathy, in which a hyperreflective band is observed in the inner nuclear layer; and type 2, in which the hyperreflective band is located in the outer nuclear layer, involving the ellipsoid zone and the zone of interdigitation with the retinal pigment epithelium. Up to this moment, there is no cure; but it is possible to act on the risk factors. Because it is a rare condition and because there are no reports so far in Cuba, two patients with similar clinical pictures of these two variants are presented; concluding the importance of multimodal images as an auxiliary diagnostic tool(AU)

Sebum is an important component of the skin that has attracted attention in many fields, including dermatology and cosmetics. Pore expansion due to sebum on the skin can lead to various problems. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the morphological characteristics of sebum. In this study, we used optical coherence tomography (OCT) to evaluate facial sebum areas. We obtained the OCT maximum amplitude projection (MAP) image and a cross-sectional image of skin pores in the facial area. Subsequently, we detected the sebum in skin pores using the detection algorithm of the ImageJ software to quantitatively determine the size of randomly selected pores in the proposed MAP images. Additionally, the pore size was analyzed by acquiring images before and after facial sebum extraction. According to our research, facial sebum can be morphologically described using the OCT system. Since OCT imaging enables specific analysis of skin parameters, including pores and sebum, skin analysis employing OCT could be an effective method for further research.

AIM: To analyze the application value of spectral domain-optical coherence tomography(SD-OCT)parameters on evaluating visual acuity improvement after internal limiting membrane peeling of macular hole.METHODS: The retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of 82 patients(82 eyes)with idiopathic macular hole(IMH)who underwent vitrectomy + internal limiting membrane peeling + long-acting gas tamponade in the hospital between May 2019 and February 2021. The correlation between IMH closure and SD-OCT parameters at 3mo after surgery was analyzed, and the risk factors for poor postoperative visual acuity improvement were evaluated.RESULTS: Spearman rank correlation coefficient analysis showed that IMH closure at 3mo after operation was positively correlated with preoperative external limiting membrane(ELM)defect diameter(rs=0.308, P&#x003C;0.05), and it was negatively correlated with preoperative macular hole index(MHI; rs=-0.266, P&#x003C;0.05). Logistic regression analysis revealed that preoperative MHI≥0.5 was a protective factor affecting poor postoperative visual acuity improvement(OR=0.691, P&#x003C;0.05).CONCLUSION: SD-OCT can predict the surgical efficacy by detecting the preoperative MHI and ELM defect diameter, and it is beneficial to judging the improvement of visual function.

AIM: To compare the thickness of retina in macular area and retinal nerve fiber layer(RNFL)around optic disc between the eyes of monocular anisometropic amblyopia children and normal eyes.METHODS: A total of 62 children(124 eyes)with monocular anisometropic amblyopia who were treated in Chengdu Women's and Children's Central Hospital from January 2021 to October 2022 were selected as the experimental group, and 60 children(60 eyes; right eye)with normal vision who were treated in the same period were selected as the control group. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography(SD-OCT)was used to detect the retinal thickness in macular region and the RNFL thickness around optic disc in the two groups, and comparative analysis was performed.RESULTS: The retinal thickness and perioptic RNFL thickness of amblyopic children in experimental group were thicker than those in control group, and most of them had significant differences(P&#x003C;0.05). The retinal thickness and perioptic RNFL thickness of contralateral non-amblyopic children in experimental group were thinner than those in control group, but there were no significant differences in most of them(P&#x003E;0.05).CONCLUSIONS: There are differences in the retinal thickness of the macula and perioptic RNFL in the amblyopic eye and the contralateral non-amblyopic eye of monocular anisometropic amblyopic children compared with normal eyes, and the contralateral non-amblyopic eye is not completely equal to the normal eye.

Background and objectives: Acute posterior multifocal pigment epitheliopathy/acute multifocal ischaemic choriocapillaritis (APMPPE/AMIC) is part of the group of choriocapillaritis entities. The aim of this article was to report a series of patients with emphasis on the clinical presentation and treatment paradigms. Materials and Methods: Retrospective case series study performed in the Centre for Ophthalmic Specialised care (COS), Lausanne, Switzerland, on patients diagnosed from 2000 to 2021 with APMPPE/AMIC. Procedures performed at presentation and upon follow-up (when available) included best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), routine ocular examination, laser flare photometry (LFP) microperimetry (when available) and visual field testing. Imaging investigations included spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT)/enhanced depth imaging OCT (EDI-OCT), OCT angiography (OCT-A) as well as fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography (FA, ICGA). The presence or not of prodromal systemic viral-like symptoms was noted. The localisation of lesions whether foveal or extrafoveal, divided the patients into 2 groups (foveal, peri-or parafoveal). Exclusion criteria were patients diagnosed with APMPPE/AMIC and a positive QuantiFERON test and/or VDRL-TPHA tests. Results: Nineteen (35 eyes) of 1664 new patients (1.14%) were diagnosed with APMPPE/AMIC and included in our study. 13 (68%) were male and 6 (32%) were female. The mean age was 33.1 ± 9.2 years. 16 (84%) patients mentioned a viral prodromal episode or other systemic symptoms, and 3 (16%) did not mention any episode before the onset of ocular symptoms. 15 (39%) out of 38 eyes had foveal localisation of the lesions, 20 (52.6%) had peri- or para-foveal localisations and 3 eyes were normal [3 unilateral cases (15%)]. Mean BCVA at presentation was 0.83 ± 0.24 for the whole group. It was 0.58 ± 0.28 for the group with foveal lesions, increasing to 0.97 ± 0.13 at last follow-up (p = 0.0028). For the group with extrafoveal lesions mean BCVA at presentation was 0.94 ± 0.18, improving to 1.18± 0.10 at last follow-up (p = 0.0039). 13 (68%) patients received prednisone treatment, of whom 2 (10%) received additionally at least one immunosuppressive agent, 4 (20%) patients received no treatment and in 2 patients the information was unavailable. All patients in the foveal lesion group received corticosteroid treatment except one who evolved to bilateral macular atrophy. Conclusions: APMPPE/AMIC is a primary choriocapillaritis. Although it is thought that the disease is self-limited, treatment is necessary in most cases, especially when lesions are located in the fovea.

BACKGROUND: Retinal artery occlusion is a vascular entity caused by the temporary blockage of retinal arterioles. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 57-year-old woman a partial visual loss in the right eye due to a cilioretinal artery occlusion. Ophthalmoscopy revealed a focal area of retinal whitening superior to the optic nerve in the right eye, while the left eye was within the limit. Retinal imaging, in particular optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), showed a capillary drop out of the superficial capillary plexus and the corresponding b-scan showed a round hyporeflective grey dot (optical empty) corresponding to the dark grey spot on the enface view at the level of the retinal whitening area. CONCLUSION: Although the images did not allow the differentiation between vasospasm or retinal emboli, the OCTA imaging might help to identify and to caught in the act the specific region causing the retinal impairment. Also, the possible formation of small microcavity should be considered in case with branch retinal artery occlusion. The use of this new imaging technology might help to evaluate the efficacy of the therapy in vivo.

AIM:To evaluate the macular microstructural changes in patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment(RRD)after silicone oil tamponade by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography(SD-OCT).METHODS:From November 2019 to July 2021, 27 patients with 27 eyes in RRD who underwent vitrectomy combined with silicone oil tamponade in Cangzhou Aier Eye Hospital were enrolled in this study as the observation group, other 30 healthy volunteers with 30 eyes were included in the control group. The best corrected visual acuity(BCVA)of patients before and after operation were observed, and quantified evaluation of the postoperative macular microstructural changes were performed by SD-OCT.RESULTS: The BCVA(LogMAR)of the observation group at 1wk and 3mo after operation(0.61±0.23, 0.69±0.34)were improved compared with those before operation(1.43±0.77)(all P<0.01). The cube volume and average cube thickness in the macular area at 3mo after operation in the observation group were lower than those at 1wk and 1mo after operation in the control group(all P<0.05). There were no differences in the average ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer(GCIPL)thickness, minimum GCIPL thickness, average macular retinal nerve fiber layer(mRNFL)thickness and minimum mRNFL thickness at 1wk, 1 and 3mo after operation in the observation group, but all decreased compared with the control group(all P<0.01). There were 9 eyes with subretinal fluid(SRF)in the observation group during postoperative follow-up, SRF had a tendency to be gradually absorbed, but 1 eye had a secondary macular hole; 3 eyes had ellipsoid zone disruption, which had a tendency to be gradually repaired; 2 eyes had submacular perfluorocarbon liquid; 2 eyes had macular edema.CONCLUSION: SD-OCT can show the microstructure and morphological changes very well in macular area in patients with RRD after silicone oil tamponade, and has important clinical value for the preoperative and postoperative follow-up evaluation of RRD.

Choroidal imaging investigation techniques were very limited until 2-3 decades ago.Fluorescein angiography (FA) was not suited for the analysis of the choroidal compartment and B-scan ultrasonography did not provide enough accuracy. It was on this background that a purely phenomenological approach was attempted to classify these choroiditis diseases by regrouping them under the vague potpourri term of "white dot syndromes". With the availability of precise investigational modalities of choroidal inflammation or choroiditis-induced lesions, such as indocyanine green angiography (ICGA), spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) it became possible to better classify these diseases based on clinico-pathological mechanisms rather than on purely phenomenological observation.Recently OCT-angiography has implemented the armamentarium of diagnostic techniques possibly also contributing to the classification of choroidal inflammatory diseases.Based on pioneering pragmatism, the aim of this article was to give a clear classification of non-infectious choroiditis. Thanks to new imaging investigations of the choroid, it is now possible to classify and understand the diverse clinicopathological mechanisms in the group of non-infectious choroiditis entities.

Objectives: Retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness has been detected by numerous studies about alterations and abnormalities in childhood glaucoma, but these studies have yielded inconsistent results about the RNFL thinning region. The investigation of characteristics of RNFL in pediatric patients would contribute to the deep understanding of the neuropathic mechanisms of childhood glaucoma. Thus, the degree of thinning in different quadrants deserves further discussion and exploration. Method: A systematic literature search was conducted using the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Medline, Embase, and PubMed databases to identify clinical studies published from inception to April 1, 2021. Results: Ten studies were included in this review with a total of 311 children with glaucoma and 444 in nonglaucomatous controls. The results revealed that average peripapillary RNFL (pRNFL) thickness was attenuated in pediatric patients with glaucoma [weighted mean difference (WMD) = -20.75; 95% CI -27.49 to -14.01; p < 0.00001]. Additionally, pRNFL thickness in eight quadrants (superior, inferior, temporal, nasal, superotemporal, inferotemporal, superonasal, and inferonasal) had different levels of reduction in the pediatric group of glaucoma. Conclusion: This study indicates that eight regions of RNFL thickness show various degrees of thinning in childhood glaucoma. However, caution is required in the interpretation of results due to marked heterogeneity. Future studies, especially larger samples and multicenter, need to confirm our results.

PURPOSE: To robustly segment retinal layers that are affected by complex variety of retinal diseases for optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) en face projection generation. METHODS: In this paper, we propose a robust retinal layer segmentation model to reduce the impact of multifarious abnormalities on model performance. OCTA vascular distribution that is regarded as the supplements of spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) structural information is introduced to improve the robustness of layer region encoding. To further reduce the sensitivity of region encoding to retinal abnormalities, we propose a multitask layer-wise refinement (MLR) module that can refine the initial layer region segmentation results layer-by-layer. Finally, we design a region-to-surface transformation (RtST) module without additional training parameters to convert the encoding layer regions to their corresponding layer surfaces. This transformation from layer regions to layer surfaces can remove the inaccurate segmentation regions, and the layer surfaces are easier to be used to protect the retinal layer natures than layer regions. RESULTS: Experimental data includes 273 eyes, where 95 eyes are normal and 178 eyes contain complex retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR), central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC), choroidal neovascularization (CNV), and so forth. The dice similarity coefficient (DSC: %) of superficial, deep and outer retina achieves 98.92, 97.48, and 98.87 on normal eyes and 98.35, 95.33, and 98.17 on abnormal eyes. Compared with other commonly used layer segmentation models, our model achieves the state-of-the-art layer segmentation performance. CONCLUSIONS: The final results prove that our proposed model obtains outstanding performance and has enough ability to resist retinal abnormalities. Besides, OCTA modality is helpful for retinal layer segmentation.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: AZOOR is a rare disease characterized by loss of zones of outer retinal function, first described by J Donald Gass in 1993. Symptoms include acute onset photopsias and subjective visual field losses. The syndrome is characterized by a normal fundus appearance, scotomas and electroretinographic changes pointing towards outer retinal dysfunction. Evolution, response to immunosuppressive treatment and outcome are difficult to predict. The aim of this small case series was to identify the morphological changes and sequence of events in AZOOR thanks to multimodal imaging. METHODS: Charts of AZOOR patients seen in the Centre for Ophthalmic Specialized care (COS, Lausanne, Switzerland) were analyzed by multimodal imaging including fundus photography, fluorescein angiography (FA), indocyanine green angiography (ICGA), blue light fundus autofluorescence (BL-FAF) and spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in addition to a complete ophthalmological examination including visual field testing and microperimetry, as well as OCT angiography (OCT-A) and ganglion-cell complex analysis when available. Cases and Results: Three AZOOR patients with a mean follow-up of 47 ± 25.5 months were included following the clinical definitions laid down by J Donald Gass. The primary damage was identified at the level of the photoreceptor outer segments with an intact choriocapillaris and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) layer, these structures being only secondarily involved with progression of the disease. CONCLUSION: Although AZOOR has often been included within white dot syndromes, some of which are now known to be choriocapillaris diseases (choriocapillaritis entities), our findings clearly commend to differentiate AZOOR from entities such as MEWDS (Multiple evanescent white dot syndrome), APMPPE (Acute Posterior Multifocal Placoid Pigment Epitheliopathy), MFC (Multifocal Choroiditis) and others, as the damage to photoreceptors is primary in AZOOR (a retinopathy) and secondary in choriocapillaritis (a choriocapillaropathy).

The retina offers a unique opportunity to directly visualize blood vessels in vivo noninvasively. Over the past few decades, several new imaging techniques have been adapted to study the retinal vasculature in the laboratory in animal models and in the clinic in human subjects. High-contrast, finely detailed fundus images can be acquired by confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (cSLO). With fluorescein angiography (FA), the retinal microcirculation can be visualized. High-resolution spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) is able to acquire cross-section images resolving the microarchitecture of the retina, similar to histology. The techniques and protocols for acquiring cSLO, FA, and SD-OCT imaging of the retinal vasculature and morphology in the rodent are described.

PURPOSE: To present a case of stellate nonhereditary idiopathic foveomacular retinoschisis (SNIFR) resolution associated with vitreomacular adherence (VMA) release and propose a potential contributing association between SNIFR and vitreomacular interactions. OBSERVATIONS: A 67-year-old female patient was diagnosed and followed for SNIFR in OD with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) scans at presentation and subsequent visits at 3, 6, 16 and 22 months. VMA and foveomacular retinoschisis remained unchanged on SD-OCT during the first 6 months of the follow-up. At 16-month follow-up visit, SD-OCT revealed VMA release and an important improvement of the macular schisis. At 22 months of follow-up, SNIFR cavities completely resolved in the presence of posterior hyaloid separation from the macular area without any adjunct treatment. The authors could not identify any other possible cause to justify the resolution of SNIFR other than VMA release in this case. Patient did not undergo any treatment for OD other than phacoemulsification 3 months after initial visit. CONCLUSION: The present case illustrates with SD-OCT scans a possible association between SNIFR resolution and VMA release, highlighting a potential tractional component of the posterior vitreous on the internal limiting membrane and consequent glial cells stretching with schisis formation.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness and is characterized by fluid-related accumulations such as intra-retinal fluid (IRF), subretinal fluid (SRF), and pigment epithelial detachment (PED). Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) is the primary modality used to diagnose AMD, yet it does not have algorithms that directly detect and quantify the fluid. This work presents an improved convolutional neural network (CNN)-based architecture called RetFluidNet to segment three types of fluid abnormalities from SD-OCT images. The model assimilates different skip-connect operations and atrous spatial pyramid pooling (ASPP) to integrate multi-scale contextual information; thus, achieving the best performance. This work also investigates between consequential and comparatively inconsequential hyperparameters and skip-connect techniques for fluid segmentation from the SD-OCT image to indicate the starting choice for future related researches. RetFluidNet was trained and tested on SD-OCT images from 124 patients and achieved an accuracy of 80.05%, 92.74%, and 95.53% for IRF, PED, and SRF, respectively. RetFluidNet showed significant improvement over competitive works to be clinically applicable in reasonable accuracy and time efficiency. RetFluidNet is a fully automated method that can support early detection and follow-up of AMD.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the agreement between the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) and foveal thickness (FT) measurements among three different spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) instruments in a sample of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and a healthy age-matched control group. METHODS: An observational cross-sectional study with three groups: healthy subjects and MS patients w/w a previous clinical diagnosis of optic neuritis (ON) was conducted. The pRNFL and FT were measured using three different SD-OCT instruments (OCT PRIMUS 200 and OCT CIRRUS 500 SD-OCT [Carl Zeiss Meditec] and OCT 3D 2000 [Topcon]). RESULTS: Twenty eyes from 10 healthy subjects matched in age with MS patients without a previous history of eye disease and 62 MS eyes from 31 MS patients (29 eyes without history of ON and 33 eyes with history of ON) were enrolled. Healthy subjects and MS patients without ON did not show differences between the pRNFL and FT thickness (P>0.99) with any of the instruments. However, MS eyes with a previous episode of ON showed thinner pRNFL and FT (P<0.01). PRIMUS and CIRRUS OCT showed better agreement of the pRNLF and FT in both healthy and MS eyes. However, 3D OCT showed less agreement in the pRNFL measurement with CIRRUS in both healthy and MS eyes. INTERPRETATION: Although OCT is a valuable technology to improve MS patient assessment, differences between devices must be taken into account. It is necessary to create an international group that standardizes the measurement conditions and above all that provides reference bases for normal subjects.

INTRODUCTION: Corona virus disease (COVID-19) pandemic can cause myriad of ocular manifestations. We report a case of unilateral multi focal central serous retinopathy, post COVID-19 infection in an Asian Indian female. CASE PRESENTATION: A 42-year-old female presented to us with unilateral blurring, in the right eye (OD), 12 days after COVID-19 infection. She had fever, chills, shortness of breath and cough with tiredness and was COVID- RT PCR positive. She was administered intravenous and oral antibiotics with injection heparin/remdesivir, during her 7 day stay at the hospital. She was also on steroid inhalers. She had no systemic history of note. On ocular evaluation, her corrected distance visual acuity was 20/40 in OD and 20/20 in left eye (OS). Anterior segment was normal. Anterior vitreous was clear. Fundus examination of the OD showed central serous retinopathy (CSCR) with OS being normal. CONCLUSION: CSCR can occur post COVID-19 due to steroid administration and physicians administering it should be aware of this and refer the patients to an ophthalmologist earlier.

PURPOSE: The surgical indication for lamellar macular holes (LMH) is controversial due to a misclassification of different macular diseases. A consensus based on an optical coherence tomography (OCT) definition has recently been suggested. The aim of this study was to investigate the surgical outcomes of patients with LMH selected based on this OCT-based consensus definition. METHODS: Retrospective review of patients who underwent surgery for LMH with a follow-up of at least 3 months. Anatomical OCT criteria for the diagnosis of LMH were the presence of an irregular foveal contour with foveal cavitation and a loss of retinal tissue. Cases of macular pseudoholes and epiretinal membrane foveoschisis were excluded. Surgery consisted in pars plana vitrectomy with centripetal peri-hole peeling of epiretinal proliferation and internal limiting membrane. Pre- and postoperative visual acuities (VA) were compared, and changes in OCT anatomical features, including the restoration of the foveal profile and outer retinal layers, were assessed. RESULTS: Eleven eyes of 11 patients were included, of which 9 eyes (81.8%) showed proliferation on preoperative OCT. The mean VA improved from 0.44 ± 0.19 LogMAR (20/55 Snellen equivalent) to 0.16 ± 0.08 LogMAR (20/28 Snellen equivalent), after a mean follow-up of 7.2 ± 2.9 months (P = 0.02). Postoperatively, all eyes showed a restored foveal profile. The mean central foveal thickness increased from 127.6 ± 29.9 µm to 209.0 ± 44.0 µm (P = 0.001). At baseline, ellipsoid zone disruption and external limiting membrane disruption were found in 9 and 7 eyes, respectively. Postoperatively, the ellipsoid zone and external limiting membrane were restored in respectively 6/9 eyes (66.7%) and 5/7 eyes (71.4%). No cases of postoperative full-thickness macular hole were found. CONCLUSION: In patients with LMH carefully selected based on the recent OCT-based criteria and showing a loss of retinal tissue, the foveal architecture was restored and the VA was improved after vitrectomy with peri-hole peeling for epiretinal proliferation.

BACKGROUND: To analyze multiple imaging modalities in patients with Bietti crystalline dystrophy (BCD) and to investigate which factors from these modalities are associated with best corrected visual acuity (BCVA). METHODS: In this retrospective study, 40 eyes from 22 patients with BCD were included and were separated into group 1 (BCVA ≤20/200) and group 2 (BCVA > 20/200). Data including BCVA and characteristic findings from near-infrared reflectance (NIR) imaging, fundus autofluorescence (FAF), and spectral domain-optic coherence tomography (SD-OCT) were analyzed and compared. The outcome measures of multimodal imaging were evaluated for correlation with BCVA. RESULTS: NIR is a good diagnostic tool for detecting either crystalline or sclerotic vessels in BCD. Patients in group 1 tended to have a thinner choroid (P = 0.047) with ellipsoid zone (EZ) disruption (P = 0.011). Calculation of the area under the curve indicated that EZ disruption detected on SD-OCT could be a good predictor of legal blindness in BCD. CONCLUSION: For the diagnosis of BCD, NIR could be a good diagnostic tool. Of the studied imaging modalities, we found that EZ disruption at the fovea were strongly associated with legal blindness, which could be easily assessed by SD-OCT.
