RESUMO

When pipe defects are generated above the T-type support structure location, it is difficult to distinguish the reflection signals caused by the weld bead at the support structure from the reflection echoes of pipe defects. Therefore, in order to effectively detect pipe defects, a waveform subtraction method with a circumferential shear horizontal (CSH) guided wave is proposed, which is generated by an electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT). First, a CSH0 guided wave mode with a center frequency of 500 kHz is selected to establish a three-dimensional model with and without pipe defects above the support structure. Following this, the influence of different widths of support structures on the echo signal is compared. Moreover, simulation and experimental results are used to compare the influence of different welding qualities on the detection results. Finally, the waveform subtraction method is used to process the simulation and experimental signals, and the influence of pipe defects with different lengths and depths is discussed. The results show that the non-through crack defect of 5 mm × 1 mm (length × depth) can be detected. The results show that this method can effectively detect the cracks by eliminating the influence of the weld echo, which provides a new concept for the detection of the defect above the support structure.

RESUMO

In order to solve the design requirements of high stiffness and lightweight for the primary support structure of a wide-field auroral imager, we propose a solution for designing and optimizing a large-scale complex thin-walled structure using additive manufacturing. Firstly, we devise an integrated thin-walled structure and test material for the main support. Secondly, shape optimization is achieved via the optimization of the lateral slope angle of the primary support based on Timoshenko cantilever beam theory. Additionally, an active fitting optimization algorithm is proposed for the purpose of refining the wall thickness of the thin-walled structure. Then, we determine the structural design of the main support. This primary support is manufactured via selective laser melting (SLM). Following processing, the structure size is 538 mm × 400 mm × 384 mm, and the mass is 7.78 kg. Finally, frequency scanning experiments indicate that, in the horizontal direction, there is a natural frequency of 105.97 Hz with an error rate of approximately 3% compared to finite element analysis results. This research confirms that our large-scale complex, thin-walled main support structure design meets all design requirements.

RESUMO

Purpose Additive manufacturing has revolutionized the fabrication of complete dentures. However, this process involves support structure, which is a construction part that holds the specimen during printing, and may prove to be disadvantageous. Therefore, this in vitro study compared the effect of support structure reduction on various volume and area distributions of a 3D-printed denture base to determine optimal parameters based on accuracy. Methods A complete maxillary denture base construction file was used as reference. Twenty denture bases were 3D printed under four conditions (total n=80): no support structure reduction (control), palatal support structure reduction (Condition P), border support structure reduction (Condition B), and palatal and border support structure reduction (Condition PB). Printing time and resin consumption were also recorded. The intaglio surface trueness and precision of all acquired data were exported to a 3D analysis software, and the dimensional changes to the denture base were analyzed using the root-mean-square estimate (RMSE) to assess geometric accuracy and generate color map patterns. Nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis and Steel-Dwass tests (α=0.05) analyzed the accumulated data. Results Control had the lowest RMSE values for trueness and precision. Nevertheless, it demonstrated a significantly lower RMSE than that of Condition B (P=0.02) in precision. Owing to negative deviation at the palatal region, Conditions P and PB had higher retention than Control and Condition B regarding the color map pattern. Conclusions Within the limitations of this study, the reduction of palatal and border support structures showed optimal accuracy with resource and cost savings.

RESUMO

The dual-transducer support structure discussed has the advantages of a simple structure and low cost, as well as allowing for the use of both Traveling-Wave (TW) and Standing-Wave (SW) acoustic transportation, supporting its use in pharmaceutical and biochemical analysis, for example. By adjusting the distance between the vibrating plate and the reflector which forms SW field in the y direction, the control of the position of the SW nodes or the TW component along the x direction allows the formation of a Two-Dimensional Standing Wave (2D-SW) or a Traveling Wave (TW) acoustic field, and these could be used for transportation in the x direction. It has been found that the x position of the SW nodes can be adjusted through changing the temporal phase shift, θ, which permits multiple objects to be transported using the 2D-SW mode. By comparison, TWs in the opposite direction could be generated at a pair of specific temporal phase shifts, allowing fast transportation using the TW mode. In this research work, an experiment has been carried out to transport polystyrene spheres using the two modes by programming the temporal phase shift, θ, this illustrating that precise position control of the multiple objects transported was possible using the 2D-SW mode, while high-speed transportation (up to 540 mm/s) was realized using the TW mode, showing that the dual-transducer support structure could be used effectively for accurate and fast transportation. As a fully non-contact method, the dual-transducer support structure can be seen to work in the 2D-SW mode for reaction synthesis or detection applications, and also in TW mode for rapid sample transportation applications.

RESUMO

Owing to their high design freedom and excellent performance, lattice structures have shown outstanding capabilities and great potential in aeronautics and astronautics fields. In this paper, we propose a method to construct lattice structures by parameterizing biological features. An ant-leg configuration is used as the bionic object to generate a bionic lightweight design with a gradient lattice structure. To achieve the above goal, an innovative optimization method combining topology optimization, size optimization, and a bionic lattice structure is proposed in this paper. Taking the support structure of the Fengyun-3 satellite payload as the research object, this optimization method is applied to optimize the design. Further, the reconstructed optimization model and the original model are simulated to evaluate and compare the structural performance. The simulation results show that when combined with bionic lattice structure and structural optimization, the method can achieve the lightweight design goal while ensuring the stiffness and strength of the structure. The results demonstrate that the application of a bionic lattice design in a lightweight design has feasibility and expectable potential.

RESUMO

Synergistic optimization of the elementary steps of water dissociation and hydrogen desorption for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media is a challenge. Herein, the Ru cluster anchored on a trace P-doped defective TiO2 substrate (Ru/P-TiO2 ) was synthesized as an electrocatalyst for the HER; it exhibited a commercial Pt/C-like geometric activity and an excellent mass activity of 9984.3 mA mgRu -1 at -0.05 V vs. RHE, which is 34.3 and 18.7 times higher than that of Pt/C and Ru/TiO2 , respectively. Experimental and theoretical studies indicated that using a rutile-TiO2 -crystal-phase substrate enhanced the HER activity more than the anatase phase. Rich surface oxygen vacancies on rutile-TiO2 facilitated the adsorption and dissociation of water, while the partial substitution of Ti4+ with P5+ enhanced H2 generation by facilitating hydrogen spillover from the Ru site to the surface P site, synergistically enhancing the HER activity.

RESUMO

Carbon-based materials are promising candidates for enhancing thermal properties of phase change materials (PCMs) without lowering its energy storage capacity. Nowadays, researchers are trying to find a proper porous structure as PCMs support for thermal energy storage applications. In this context, the main novelty of this paper consists in using a ZnO-CNT-based nanocomposite powder, prepared by an own hydrothermal method at high pressure, to obtain porous 3D printed support structures with embedding capacity of PCMs. The morphology of 3D structures, before and after impregnation with three PCMs inorganic salts (NaNO3, KNO3 and NaNO3:KNO3 mixture (1:1 vol% saturated solution) was investigated by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). For structure impregnated with nitrates mixture, SEM cross-section morphology suggest that the inorganic salts impregnation started into micropores, continuing with the covering of the 3D structure surface and epitaxial growing of micro/nanostructured crystals, which led to reducing the distance between the structural strands. The variation of melting/crystallization points and associated enthalpies of impregnated PCMs and their stability during five repeated thermal cycles were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and simultaneous DSC-thermogravimetry (DSC-TGA). From the second heating-cooling cycle, the 3D structures impregnated with NaNO3 and NaNO3-KNO3 mixture are thermally stable.

RESUMO

The Z-scheme overall solar water splitting is a mimic of natural photosynthesis to convert solar energy into chemical energy. Since the energy levels of most organic semiconductors match well with the hydrogen evolution potential, they have great application prospects as photocathodes in Z-scheme photoelectrochemical systems. However, due to the weak light absorption and difficult carrier separation, the photocurrent density and onset potential of organic photocathodes are still low. To solve these problems, we introduced a copper nanosheets array (Cu NSA) framework under organic layers to increase the surface reaction sites, improve the light absorption and enhance the distribution range of built-in electric field simultaneously. As a result, the photocurrent density and onset potential of poly(3-hexylthiophene) : [6,6]-phenyl-C61 -butyric acid (P3HT : PCBM) photocathode were enhanced significantly. The onset potential increased by 50 mV to 0.65 V vs. RHE, and the photocurrent density reached -1 mA cm-2 at 0 V vs. RHE, which was 18 times that of the sample without Cu NSA. The optimized photocathode was connected with titanium dioxide nanorods array photoanode in a tandem manner to realize the spontaneous overall water splitting. Without bias and co-catalyst, the photocurrent density was maintained at 110 µA cm-2 and the solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency was 0.14 % in neutral solution. These results provide a feasible method for optimizing the performance of organic photocathodes.

RESUMO

Like most additive manufacturing processes for metals, material jetting processes require support structures in order to attain full 3D capability. The support structures have to be removed in subsequent operations, which increases costs and slows down the manufacturing process. One approach to this issue is the use of water-soluble support structures made from salts that allow a fast and economic support removal. In this paper, we analyze the influence of salt support structures on material jetted aluminum parts. The salt is applied in its molten state, and because molten salts are typically corrosive substances, it is important to investigate the interaction between support and build material. Other characteristic properties of salts are high melting temperatures and low thermal conductivity, which could potentially lead to remelting of already printed structures and might influence the microstructure of aluminum that is printed on top of the salt due to low cooling rates. Three different sample geometries have been examined using optical microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and micro-hardness testing. The results indicate that there is no distinct influence on the process with respect to remelting, micro-hardness and chemical reactions. However, a larger dendrite arm spacing is observed in aluminum that is printed on salt.

RESUMO

Topology optimization (TO) is a powerful technique capable of finding the optimal layout of material and connectivity within a design domain. However, designs obtained by TO are usually geometrically complex. Such complex designs cannot be fabricated easily by conventional manufacturing methods. Therefore, additive manufacturing (AM), a free-form manufacturing technique, is extensively coupled with TO. Like most techniques, AM has its own limitations. Consequently, a range of additive manufacturing oriented topology optimization (AM oriented TO) algorithms were proposed to generate the topologies suitable for AM. Due to existing trade-off relationships in AM oriented TO, investigating multi-objective AM oriented TO seems essential to obtain more practical solutions. This paper provides a review on the recent developments of MOTO, AM oriented TO, and trade-off relationships that exist in AM oriented TO. This review paper also discusses the challenges and future trends in these topics. It is hoped that this review paper could inspire both academics and engineers to make a contribution towards bridging together MOTO and AM.

RESUMO

Multimaterials deposition, a distinct advantage in bioprinting, overcomes material's limitation in hydrogel-based bioprinting. Multimaterials are deposited in a build/support configuration to improve the structural integrity of three-dimensional bioprinted construct. A combination of rapid cross-linking hydrogel has been chosen for the build/support setup. The bioprinted construct was further chemically cross-linked to ensure a stable construct after print. This paper also proposes a file segmentation and preparation technique to be used in bioprinting for printing freeform structures.

RESUMO

Although 3D-printing is common in dentistry, the technique does not produce the required quality for all target applications. Resin type, printing resolution, positioning, alignment, target structure, and the type and number of support structures may influence the surface roughness of printed objects, and this study investigates the effects of these variables. A stereolithographic data record was generated from a master model. Twelve printing processes were executed with a stereolithography Desktop 3D Printer, including models aligned across and parallel to the printer front as well as solid and hollow models. Three layer thicknesses were used, and in half of all processes, the models were inclined at 15°. For comparison, eight gypsum models and milled polyurethane models were manufactured. The mean roughness index of each model was determined with a perthometer. Surface roughness values were approximately 0.65 µm (master), 0.87-4.44 µm (printed), 2.32-2.57 µm (milled), 1.72-1.86 µm (cast plaster/alginate casting), and 0.98-1.03 µm (cast plaster/polyether casting). The layer height and type and number of support structures influenced the surface roughness of printed models (p ≤ 0.05), but positioning, structure, and alignment did not.

RESUMO

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) filled with different kinds of ZnO whisker was prepared by chemical cross-linking reaction. It was found that the ZnO whiskers dispersed uniformly after being modified by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). The PVA/tetrapod-shaped ZnO (PVA/tetra-ZnO) composites showed better adsorption performance than other kinds of PVA/ZnO composites. The framework-supported pore-channel structure was beneficial for the transmission and adsorption of heavy metal ions, and the formation of "brush" pore-channel of PVA/tetra-ZnO composites can effectively retain and capture the heavy metal ions. The PVA/tetra-ZnO composites presented well adsorption on Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cr(III) ions than Ni(II) and showed relatively selective removal on Pb(II) and Cr(III) ions. The adsorbed heavy metal ions presented gradient distribution with high content in the out layer and low content in the inner layer. Pb(II) adsorption capacity qe increased gradually with the increase of initial solution concentration and contact time which tended to be stable at 400 mg/L and 800 min. The maximal adsorption capacity qm obtained by nonlinear fitting reached to about 116 mg/g which was very close to the experiment data. Adsorption isotherm results indicated the monolayer adsorption process of the Langmuir model and the adsorption kinetics data fitted well to the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption process was spontaneous and the high temperature was in favor of adsorption. The adsorption mechanism was explored as the combination of coordination and ion exchange. Besides, the PVA/tetra-ZnO composites exhibited better stress stability, thermo stability, and favorable regeneration than neat PVA.

RESUMO

Traditional 3D printing is based on stereolithography or standard tessellation language models, which contain many redundant data and have low precision. This paper proposes a slicing and support structure generation algorithm for 3D printing directly on boundary representation (B-rep) models. First, surface slicing is performed by efficiently computing the intersection curves between the faces of the B-rep models and each slicing plane. Then, the normals of the B-rep models are used to detect where the support structures should be located and the support structures are generated. Experimental results show the efficiency and stability of our algorithm.

RESUMO

Selective laser melting (SLM) technology was recently introduced to fabricate dental prostheses. However, the fatigue strength of clasps in removable partial dentures prepared by SLM still requires improvement. In this study, we attempted to improve the fatigue strength of clasps by adding support structures for overhanging parts, which can generally be manufactured at an angle to be self-supporting. The results show that the fatigue strength of the supported specimens was more than twice that of unsupported specimens. Electron back-scattered diffraction analysis revealed that the supported specimens exhibited lower kernel average misorientation values than the unsupported specimens, which suggested that the support structure reduced the residual strain during the SLM process and helped to prevent micro-cracks led by thermal distortion. In addition, the supported specimens cooled more rapidly, thereby forming a finer grain size compared to that of the unsupported specimens, which contributed to improving the fatigue strength. The results of this study suggest that the fatigue strength of overhanging parts can be improved by intentionally adding support structures.

RESUMO

Adipose tissue engineering aims at the restoration of soft tissue defects and the correction of contour deformities. It is therefore crucial to provide functional adipose tissue implants with appropriate volume stability. Here, we investigate two different fibrin formulations, alone or in combination with biodegradable polyurethane (PU) scaffolds as additional support structures, with regard to their suitability to generate volume-stable adipose tissue constructs. Human adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) were incorporated in a commercially available fibrin sealant as well as a stable fibrin hydrogel previously developed by our group. The composite constructs made from the commercially available fibrin and porous poly(ε-caprolactone)-based polyurethane scaffolds exhibited increased volume stability as compared to fibrin gels alone; however, only constructs using the stable fibrin gels completely maintained their size and weight for 21 days. Adipogenesis of ASCs was not impaired by the additional PU scaffold. After induction with a common hormonal cocktail, for constructs with either fibrin formulation, strong adipogenic differentiation of ASCs was observed after 21 days in vitro. Furthermore, upregulation of adipogenic marker genes was demonstrated at mRNA (PPARγ, C/EBPα, GLUT4 and aP2; qRT-PCR) and protein (leptin; ELISA) levels. Stable fibrin/PU constructs were further evaluated in a pilot in vivo study, resulting in areas of well-vascularized adipose tissue within the implants after only 5 weeks. RESUMO

Since 1999 all sixth-year students at Osaka City University Medical School have done clinical clerkships at teaching hospitals outside the university. Students can choose overseas or domestic hospitals. By the end of the 2002 academic year 32 students had done clerkships in 7 foreign countries. Arrangements for participating in overseas clerkships differ in many ways from those for domestic clerkships, as students must get information about hospitals and complete application forms in English. Because most medical students feel that making such arrangements is difficult and complex, in 2000 students established a volunteer organization that helps students to study abroad. To make the best use of this organization, Osaka City University Medical School has established several guidelines, including setting standards for students and criteria for choosing overseas hospitals. We report on some problems encountered by our school and on measures for dealing with them and report on the student-managed support organization for overseas clinical clerkships.
