BACKGROUND: Recurrent vulvovaginal candidosis (RVVC) is a chronic infection affecting 8-10% of women worldwide. Biofilm production of the infecting species and reduced sensitivity to antimycotics could contribute to the recurrence of this infection. This study aimed to examine the biofilm production ability and antifungal susceptibility of genital yeast isolates to determine their virulence potential. METHODS: Matrix-assisted laser desorption in ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) was used to identify 300 Candida species. Using crystal violet method, strains were categorized into non-producers, weak, moderate, and strong biofilm producers (BFP). Antifungal susceptibility testing was performed using commercial Integral System YEASTS Plus test (ISYPT) and broth microdilution method (BMM). RESULTS: MALDI-TOF MS identified 150 Candida albicans, 124 non-albicans Candida (NAC), and 26 Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains. Within 138 (46.0%) BFP, 23 (16.7%) were strong, 44 (31.9%) moderate, and 71 (51.4%) weak. BMM was done for 43 BFP selected isolates with nystatin MIC ˃1.25 µl, fluconazole MIC ˃64 µl, and clotrimazole MIC ˃1.0 µl determined by ISYPT. Compared to all examined isolates, BMM confirmed that: i) C. albicans and NAC BFP showed low sensitivity to fluconazole (12% and 4%, respectively); ii) all BFP showed low sensitivity to nystatin (12.7% C. albicans, 14.5% NAC, and 23.1% S. cerevisiae); iii) clotrimazole in vitro was the most efficient regarding C. albicans and S. cerevisiae strains, but in 4.0% NAC BFP for this antimycotic higher MIC was established. CONCLUSION: Novel antimycotics or possible combinations of antifungal agents and natural products could be a new treatment option for RVVC.

OBJECTIVES: Candida spp. is an opportunistic pathogen that causes superficial and invasive infections with nosocomial outbreaks without strict hygiene protocols. Herein, we assessed oral colonisation by Candida spp. in 209 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients between July 2021 and April 2022, conducting clinical, epidemiological, and microbiological characterisation of those developing oral or invasive candidiasis. METHODS: Initial oral swabs were collected within 24 h of admission in the ICU, followed by collections on Days 2, 4, 6 and 8. Swabs from denture-wearing patients, abiotic surfaces, healthcare professionals' hands, and retroauricular regions were also obtained. Recovered yeasts and filamentous fungi were identified using MALDI-TOF MS and morphological characteristics, respectively. Genetic similarity of Candida spp. isolates was evaluated using Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP), and the antifungal susceptibility profile was determined by broth microdilution. RESULTS: In the study, 64.11% of patients were orally colonised by Candida spp. Of these, 80.59% were colonised within the first 24 h. Oral colonisation also occurred on subsequent days: 50%/Day 2, 26.92%/Day 4, and 11.53%/Days 6 and 8. Of the patients, 8.61% had oral candidiasis, mainly pseudomembranous. Among orally colonised patients, 2.23% developed invasive candidiasis. Besides, 89.47% of healthcare professionals evaluated were colonised. MALDI-TOF MS identified different yeast species, and C. albicans (45.34%), C. tropicalis (15.7%), and C. parapsilosis sensu stricto (9.88%) were the most prevalent. AFLP analysis indicated a high genetic correlation (≥97%) between C. parapsilosis sensu stricto isolates from patients and professionals. Three resistant C. albicans isolates were also found. CONCLUSION: This study reported a diversity of yeast and filamentous fungi species in ICU patients and highlighted early Candida spp. colonisation risks for invasive candidiasis, as well as the potential horizontal transmission in the nosocomial setting, emphasising the need for effective infection control measures.

INTRODUCTION: Furoxan and benzofuroxan are compounds containing an N-oxide function, known for their diverse pharmacological properties, including antimicrobial and antiinflammatory effects. This study aimed to investigate these activities using an in-house library of N-oxide compounds. METHOD: Twenty compounds were tested against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes), a microorganism implicated in the development of acne vulgaris. One compound, (E)-4-(3-((2-(3-hydroxybenzoyl)hydrazone)methyl)phenoxy)-3- (phenylsulfonyl)-1,2,5-oxadiazol-2-N-oxide (compound 15), exhibited selective antimicrobial activity against C. acnes, with a Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) value of 2 µg/mL. Indirect measurement of Nitric Oxide (NO) release showed that compound 15 and isosorbide dinitrate, when treated with L-cysteine, produced nitrite levels of 20.1% and 9.95%, respectively. Using a NO scavenger (PTIO) in combination with compound 15 in a culture of C. acnes resulted in reduced antimicrobial activity, indicating that NO release is part of its mechanism of action. Cytotoxicity assessments using murine macrophages showed cellular viability above 70% at concentrations up to 0.78 µg/mL. RESULTS: Measurements of Interleukin-1 beta (IL1-ß) and Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-α) indicated that compound 15 did not reduce the levels of these pro-inflammatory cytokines. Sustained NO production by inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase (iNOS) in macrophages or neutrophils has been found to be involved in the inflammatory process in acne vulgaris and lead to toxicity in surrounding tissues. Nitrite levels in the supernatant of murine macrophages were found to be decreased at a concentration of 0.78 µg/mL of compound 15, indicating an anti-inflammatory effect. In vivo studies were conducted using Balb/c nude mice inoculated subcutaneously with C. acnes. Cream and gel formulations of compound 15 were applied to treat the animals, along with commercially available anti-acne drugs, for 14 days. Animals treated with a cream base containing 5% of compound 15 exhibited less acanthosis with mild inflammatory infiltration compared to other groups, highlighting its anti-inflammatory properties. CONCLUSION: Similar results were observed in the benzoyl peroxide group, demonstrating that compound 15 presented comparable anti-inflammatory activity to the FDA-approved drug. These promising results suggest that compound 15 has a dual mechanism of action, with selective antimicrobial activity against C. acnes and notable anti-inflammatory properties, making it a potential prototype for developing new treatments for acne vulgaris.

Recently, considerable uncertainty has arisen concerning the appropriate susceptibility testing for cefiderocol in gram-negative bacilli, particularly in the context of its application to Acinetobacter spp. The optimal method for assessing the susceptibility levels of Acinetobacter spp. to cefiderocol remains a subject of debate due to substantial disparities observed in the values obtained through various testing procedures. This study employed four minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) methodologies and the disk diffusion to assess the susceptibility of twenty-seven carbapenem resistant (CR)-Acinetobacter strains to cefiderocol. The results from our study reveal significant variations in the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values obtained with the different methods and in the level of agreement in interpretation categories between the different MIC methods and the disk diffusion test. Among the MIC methods, there was relatively more consistency in reporting the interpretation categories. For European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) breakpoints, the categorical agreement (CA) for MIC methods ranged between 66.7 and 81.5%. On the other hand, the essential agreement (EA) values were as low as 18.5-29.6%. The CA between MIC methods and disk diffusion was 81.5%. These results emphasize the need for a reliable, accurate, and clinically validated methodology to effectively assess the susceptibility of Acinetobacter spp. to cefiderocol. The wide variability observed in our study highlights the importance of standardizing the susceptibility testing process for cefiderocol to ensure consistent and reliable results for clinical decision-making.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of Helicobacter pylori gastric infection is complex and associated with increased rates of therapeutic failure. This research aimed to characterize the H. pylori infection status, strain resistance to antimicrobial agents, and the predominant lesion pattern in the gastroduodenal mucosa of patients with clinical suspicion of refractoriness to first- and second-line treatment who were diagnosed and treated in a health center in Guayaquil, Ecuador. METHODS: A total of 374 patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms and H. pylori infection were preselected and prescribed one of three triple therapy regimens for primary infection, as judged by the treating physician. Subsequently, 121 patients who returned to the follow-up visit with persistent symptoms after treatment were studied. RESULTS: All patients had H. pylori infection. Histopathological examination diagnosed chronic active gastritis in 91.7% of cases; premalignant lesions were observed in 15.8%. The three triple therapy schemes applied showed suboptimal efficacy (between 47.6% and 77.2%), with the best performance corresponding to the scheme consisting of a proton pump inhibitor + amoxicillin + levofloxacin. Bacterial strains showed very high phenotypic resistance to all five antimicrobials tested: clarithromycin, 82.9%; metronidazole, 69.7%; amoxicillin and levofloxacin, almost 50%; tetracycline, 38.2%. Concurrent resistance to clarithromycin-amoxicillin was 43.4%, to tetracycline-metronidazole 30.3%, to amoxicillin-levofloxacin 27.6%, and to clarithromycin-metronidazole 59.2%. CONCLUSIONS: In vitro testing revealed resistance to all five antibiotics, indicating that H. pylori exhibited resistance phenotypes to these antibiotics. Consequently, the effectiveness of triple treatments may be compromised, and further studies are needed to assess refractoriness in quadruple and concomitant therapies.

Saprochaete/Magnusiomyces is among rare yeasts which might emerge as causes of breakthrough infections and nosocomial outbreaks. Identification to the species level might be a challenge in clinical laboratories. Data on virulence factors are scarce and antifungal susceptibility testing methodology is not definite. The aim of this study was to confirm species identification of clinical Saprochaete/Magnusiomyces isolates, find out their virulence factors, and obtain antifungal minimum inhibitory concentrations with two reference methods. Of the 57 isolates included, 54 were Saprochaete capitata and four were Saprochaete clavata as identified by ID32C, MALDI-TOF MS, and sequencing. When tested using phenotypic methods, all isolates were negative for coagulase, hemolysis, acid proteinase, and phospholipase, 56.1% were positive for esterase, and 19.3% had intermediate surface hydrophobicity. All isolates formed biofilms, with 40.4% of the isolates producing more biomass than biofilm-positive reference strain Candida albicans MYA-274. Antifungal susceptibility testing needed an adjusted spectrophotometric inoculum than recommended in reference methods for Candida/Cryptococcus. In conclusion, Saprochaete/Magnusiomyces species could be identified using methods available in the clinical laboratories. Despite the disadvantages of the phenotypic methods, esterase positivity was observed for the first time. A high biomass production was observed in biofilms. The need for standardization of antifungal susceptibility testing was brought to attention.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the MBT-ASTRA to determine susceptibility to ceftazidime/avibactam (CZA) and meropenem (MEM) of Enterobacterales directly from positive blood cultures (BC). Bacterial suspension was incubated with antibiotic and analyzed by MALDI-TOF MS. The relative growth was calculated and cutoff values were determined to categorize isolates as "S," "I," and "R." Klebsiella spp. with CZA 20/8 mg/L and 1.5-h incubation presented 1 (5.9%) major discrepancy and 96.3% category agreement; other species required 2.5 h for 100% category agreement. For MEM, 4 mg/L and 1.5h were necessary, demonstrating 2 (6.67%) minor discrepancies and 93.3% categorical agreement.

Antifungal susceptibility testing (AST) is crucial in clinical settings to guide appropriate therapy. Nevertheless, discrepancies between treatment response and some results still persist, particularly in detecting resistance to amphotericin B (AMB) in Clavispora (Candida) lusitaniae. This study aimed to assess the susceptibility patterns of 48 recent isolates of C. lusitaniae to 9 antifungal agents and explore the feasibility of using a CLSI reference-based method to identify AMB resistance. Microdilution techniques revealed a wide range of minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for azole antifungals, while echinocandins and AMB exhibited a narrow range of MIC values, with all strains considered wild-type for the tested polyene and echinocandins. However, when agar diffusion (ellipsometry) was employed for AST, certain strains displayed colonies within the inhibition ellipse, indicating potential resistance. Interestingly, these strains did not respond to AMB treatment and were isolated during AMB treatment (breakthrough). Moreover, the evaluation of AMB minimum fungicidal concentrations (MFCs) indicated that only the strains with colonies inside the ellipse had MFC/MIC ratios ≥ 4, suggesting reduced fungicidal activity. In conclusion, this study confirms the effectiveness of ellipsometry with RPMI-1640 2% glucose agar for detecting AMB resistance in C. lusitaniae. Additionally, the proposed approach of culturing "clear" wells in the microdilution method can aid in uncovering resistant strains. The findings highlight the importance of appropriate AST methods to guide effective treatment strategies for deep-seated candidiasis caused by C. lusitaniae. Further collaborative studies are warranted to validate these findings and improve the detection of AMB clinical resistance.

In cystic fibrosis (CF) patients, fungal colonization of the respiratory tract is frequently found. Aspergillus fumigatus, Scedosporium genus, and Exophiala dermatitidis are the most commonly isolated moulds from the respiratory tract secretions of CF patients. The aim of this 5-year surveillance study was to identify trends in species distribution and susceptibility patterns of 212 mould strains identified as Aspergillus spp., Scedosporium spp., and Exophiala spp., isolated from sputum of 63 CF patients who received long-term therapy with itraconazole (ITR) and/or voriconazole (VRC). The Aspergillus isolates were identified as members of the sections Fumigati (n = 130), Flavi (n = 22), Terrei (n = 20), Nigri (n = 8), Nidulantes (n = 1), and Usti (n = 1). Among the 16 species of the genus Scedosporium, 9 were S. apiospermum, 3 S. aurantiacum, and 4 S. boydii. Among the 14 Exophiala species, all were molecularly identified as E. dermatitidis. Overall, 94% (15/16) of Scedosporium spp., 50% (7/14) of E. dermatitidis, and 7.7% (14/182) of Aspergillus spp. strains showed high MIC values (≥8 µg/ml) for at least one antifungal. Particularly, 8.9% (19/212) of isolates showed high MIC values for amphotericin B, 11.7% (25/212) for ITR, 4.2% (9/212) for VRC, and 3.3% (7/212) for posaconazole. In some cases, such as some A. fumigatus and E. dermatitidis isolates recovered from the same patient, susceptibility to antifungal azoles decreased over time. We show that the use of azoles for a long time in CF patients causes the selection/isolation of mould strains with higher MIC values.

In recent years, Campylobacter has become increasingly resistant to antibiotics, especially those first-choice drugs used to treat campylobacteriosis. Studies in South America have reported cases of antibiotic-resistant Campylobacter in several countries, mainly in Brazil. To understand the current frequency of antibiotic-resistant Campylobacter in humans, farm animals, and food of animal origin in South America, we systematically searched for different studies that have reported Campylobacter resistance. The most commonly reported species were C. jejuni and C. coli. Resistance to ciprofloxacin was found to be ubiquitous in the isolates. Nalidixic acid and tetracycline showed a significantly expressed resistance. Erythromycin, the antibiotic of first choice for the treatment of campylobacteriosis, showed a low rate of resistance in isolates but was detected in almost all countries. The main sources of antibiotic-resistant Campylobacter isolates were food of animal origin and farm animals. The results demonstrate that resistant Campylobacter isolates are disseminated from multiple sources linked to animal production in South America. The level of resistance that was identified may compromise the treatment of campylobacteriosis in human and animal populations. In this way, we are here showing all South American communities the need for the constant surveillance of Campylobacter resistance and the need for the strategic use of antibiotics in animal production. These actions are likely to decrease future difficulties in the treatment of human campylobacteriosis.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify antimicrobial resistance genotypes in 63 Campylobacter coli strains isolated from humans (12), animals (21), the environment (20), and food (10) in Brazil using whole genome sequencing (WGS) tools, comparing them with results obtained by antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) against some important antimicrobials in clinical use. METHODS: Phenotypic resistance profiles were determined by minimal inhibitory concentrations and the disk diffusion technique. The prediction of the resistance genes was performed using ABRicate v.0.8 and the Resistance Gene Identifier software of the CARD. RESULTS: The percentage of C. coli strains phenotypically resistant to antimicrobials were: ampicillin, 44.4%; doxycycline, 20.6%; tetracycline, 20.6%; ciprofloxacin, 12.7%; nalidixic acid, 12.7%; streptomycin, 6.3%; erythromycin, 4.8%; and gentamicin, 1.6%. The genes blaOXA-605 / blaOXA-61,tet(O), cmeB, aadE-Cc, aph (3 ') - IIIa, sat4 and aad9 were detected in 54%, 22.2%, 9.5%,6.3%, 1.6%, 1.6%, and 1.6% strains, respectively. Mutations T86I in the QRDR region of gyrA were detected in 8 (12.7%) strains. The agreement between AST and WGS was 100%, 92.9%, 82.4%, and 80% for quinolones, tetracycline, ß-lactam, and aminoglycoside classes, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The rates of C. coli strains resistant to ß- lactams and quinolones may represent a public health concern. The partial agreement between AST and WGS shows that improvement in antibiotic resistance databases may be required to minimize this discrepancy observed in some antimicrobial classes and to become an acceptable tool to both clinical microbiologists and regulatory agencies.

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the greatest threats to animal and public health. Clostridioides (prev. Clostridium) difficile is a major burden to healthcare and a relevant AMR gene reservoir. Despite the known importance of AMR in C. difficile epidemiology and treatment, antimicrobial susceptibility testing for this pathogen is still based on the determination of the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) by the agar dilution method, which is technically demanding and labor-intensive. In this study, the disk diffusion method was used to evaluate the susceptibility of C. difficile to erythromycin, rifampicin, and tetracycline. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 155 isolates isolated between 2011 and 2022 from humans and animals in Brazil were simultaneously tested using the disk diffusion method and the epsilometer test (Etest) for these three antimicrobials on Brucella blood agar supplemented with vitamin K and hemin. RESULTS: The results suggest that disk diffusion can be an interesting routine tool to identify erythromycin- and rifampicin-resistant C. difficile isolates (≥20 mm cut-off) and wild type (WT) strains (≥28 mm). However, the disk diffusion protocol tested in this study does not seem suitable for tetracycline because of the common misclassification of resistant strains.

Delay in the results of standard phenotypic susceptibility tests is the main obstacle to adequate antibiotic treatment. For this reason, the European Committee for Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing has proposed the Rapid Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing for the disk diffusion method directly from blood culture. However, to date, there are no studies evaluating early readings of polymyxin B broth microdilution (BMD), the only standardized methodology for assessing susceptibility to polymyxins. This study aimed to evaluate modifications in the BMD technique for polymyxin B using fewer antibiotic dilutions and reading after an incubation time of 8-9 hr (early reading) in comparison to 16-20 hr of incubation (standard reading) for isolates of Enterobacterales, Acinetobacter baumannii complex, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A total of 192 isolates of gram-negative bacteria were evaluated and the minimum inhibitory concentrations were read after early and standard incubations. The early reading presented 93.2% of essential agreement and 97.9% of categorical agreement with the standard reading of BMD. Only three isolates (2.2%) presented major errors and only one (1.7%) presented a very major error. These results indicate a high agreement between the early and the standard reading times of BMD of polymyxin B.

This study evaluated in-vitro action of a new molecule, the polypyrrole nanoparticles (Ppy-NP), against Pythium insidiosum isolates using M38-A2/CLSI; the minimal inhibitory (MIC) and minimal oomicidal (MOC) concentrations were also determined. Additionally, changes in the hyphae wall of P. insidiosum CBS 575.85 treated with Ppy-NP were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The MIC100 and MOC for all isolates ranged from 8 to 32 µg mL-1, and the MIC90 and MIC50 were 16 µg mL-1. The SEM showed structural damage to the hyphae of P. insidisoum treated with Ppy-NP, as hyphae surfaces with less turgidity were found, thereby showing scaling and ruptures compared to the control (untreated hyphae). Our findings highlighted the anti-P. insidiosum properties of Ppy-NP proved to be a promising candidate for research using pythiosis experimental models.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are recognized as important sources of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria (ARBs) and Antibiotic Resistant Genes (ARGs), and might play a role in the removal and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the environment. Detailed information about AMR removal by the different treatment technologies commonly applied in urban WWTPs is needed. This study investigated the occurrence, removal and characterization of ARBs in WWTPs employing different technologies: WWTP-A (conventional activated sludge-CAS), WWTP-B (UASB reactor followed by biological trickling filter) and WWTP-C (modified activated sludge followed by UV disinfection-MAS/UV). Samples of raw sewage (RI) and treated effluent (TE) were collected and, through the cultivation-based method using 11 antibiotics, the antibiotic resistance profiles were characterized in a one-year period. MAS was effective in reducing ARB counts (2 to 3 log units), compared to CAS (1 log unit) and UASB/BTF (0.5 log unit). The composition of cultivable ARB differed between RI and TE samples. Escherichia was predominant in RI (56/118); whilst in TE Escherichia (31/118) was followed by Bacillus (22/118), Shigella (14/118) and Enterococcus (14/118). Most of the isolates identified (370/394) harboured at least two ARGs and in over 80 % of the isolates, 4 or more ARG (int1, blaTEM, TetA, sul1 and qnrB) were detected. A reduction in the resistance prevalence was observed in effluents after CAS and MAS processes; whilst a slight increase was observed in treated effluents from UASB/BTF and after UV disinfection stage. The multi-drug resistance (MDR) phenotype was attributed to 84.3 % of the isolates from RI (27/32) and 63.6 % from TE (21/33) samples and 52.3 % of the isolates (34/65) were resistant to carbapenems (imipenem, meropenem, ertapenem). The results indicate that treated effluents are still a source for MDR bacteria and ARGs dissemination to aquatic environments. The importance of biological sewage treatment was reinforced by the significant reductions in ARB counts observed. However, implementation of additional treatments is needed to mitigate MDR bacteria release into the environment.

Tuberculosis is a communicable disease with high morbidity and mortality rates in developing countries. The study's primary objective is to compare conventional methods such as acid-fast bacillus (AFB) culture and microscopy with rapid diagnostic methods. The secondary objective is to compare histopathological and microbiological findings in suspected patients with tubercular lymphadenitis. A total of 111 samples (August 2018 to September 2019) of lymph nodes were processed for AFB microscopy, AFB cultures, drug-susceptibility testing (DST), histopathology, and Xpert Mycobacterium Tuberculosis (MTB)/resistance to Rifampin (RIF) assays. Out of 111 lymph node samples, 6 (5.4%) were positive for AFB smear microscopy, 84 (75.6%) were positive for AFB culture, 80 (70.7%) were positive on Gene Xpert, and 102 (91.8%) were indicative of tuberculosis for histopathology studies. Mycobacteria growth indicator tube (MGIT) culture positivity was 84 (75.6%) higher than solid Lowenstein-Jensen (LJ) culture 74 (66.6%). Positive cultures underwent phenotypic DST. Two cases were Multidrug-resistant (MDR) on DST, while three cases were Rifampicin resistant on Gene Xpert. The sensitivity of Genexpert was (62%) against the conventional AFB culture method. The poor performance of conventional lymphadenitis diagnostic methods requires early and accurate diagnostic methodology. Xpert MTB/RIF test can help in the treatment of multidrug-resistant TB cases. Nonetheless, rapid and conventional methods should be used for complete isolation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.(AU)

BACKGROUND Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) allows rapid pathogen identification and potentially can be used for antifungal susceptibility testing (AFST). OBJECTIVES We evaluated the performance of the MALDI-TOF MS in assessing azole susceptibility, with reduced incubation time, by comparing the results with the reference method Broth Microdilution. METHODS Resistant and susceptible strains of Candida (n = 15) were evaluated against fluconazole and Aspergillus (n = 15) against itraconazole and voriconazole. Strains were exposed to serial dilutions of the antifungals for 15 h. Microorganisms' protein spectra against all drug concentrations were acquired and used to generate a composite correlation index (CCI) matrix. The comparison of autocorrelations and cross-correlations between spectra facilitated by CCI was used as a similarity parameter between them, enabling the inference of a minimum profile change concentration breakpoint. Results obtained with the different AFST methods were then compared. FINDINGS The overall agreement between methods was 91.11%. Full agreement (100%) was reached for Aspergillus against voriconazole and Candida against fluconazole, and 73.33% of agreement was obtained for Aspergillus against itraconazole. MAIN CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates MALDI-TOF MS' potential as a reliable and faster alternative for AFST. More studies are necessary for method optimisation and standardisation for clinical routine application.
