RESUMO

This article examines the development of primary English education from teachers' and students' perspectives; this is done by investigating environment, curriculum and teacher and students' information. The study was carried out with 42 primary English teachers and 404 primary students from 90 urban and rural primary schools in 13 regions in the Hunan Province, China, the participants engaged in the questionnaire tasks to investigate the present status and problems with primary English education in the Hunan Province. Based on the assessment indicators through CIPP model, combining educational theory and sustainable development theory, the present study develops a primary school English education evaluation model and conducts a practical investigation of primary school English education in the Hunan Province, based on the established model. The findings indicate that the quality of teachers has improved, teaching methods and teaching equipment have become diversified, and student interests and English proficiencies have increased. However, there are still deficiencies in the implementation of Primary English Education in the Hunan Province. For instance, certain schools improperly implement national policies, resulting in imbalanced education. Additionally, educational inequality persists due to disparities in family economic status and importance. Moreover, regional, ideological, and management factors contribute to uneven allocation of educational resources. Furthermore, significant disparities exist between urban and rural areas in terms of teacher qualifications, teaching quality, and school operating hours. The article proposes enhancing awareness of sustainable development, strengthening supervision, and seeking educational and policy support to facilitate the sustainable development of primary English education.

A sustainable future, concerning the energy transformation of a country, heavily relies on the availability of energy resources, particularly renewables such as solar, wind, hydropower, and clean hydrogen. Among these, hydrogen is the most promising energy source due to its high calorific value, ranging between 120 and 140 MJ/kg. It has the potential to lead the market in various industries such as power generation, steel, chemical, petrochemical, and automotive. Significant research has been going on in hydrogen production technologies to reduce costs and improve competitiveness with fossil fuels. One such potential approach includes the use of metal-water reactions, which offer unique opportunities for producing clean hydrogen and other valuable byproducts. However, the quantity of hydrogen produced varies depending on the metal feedstock, type of electrolyte, and the activator or catalyst, used in combination with water. This latest work discusses recent progress on hydrogen production and the effects of variations in different parameters on the process, with a focus on aluminum (Al)-water reactions. Investigations have been conducted and reported on the effect of various activators with different concentrations, the quantity of aluminum scrap feedstock, and the volume of the electrolyte on the kinetics of the metal-water reactions and hydrogen production. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) was observed to be more effective than potassium hydroxide (KOH) in promoting metal-water reactions. These activator-assisted metal-water reactions help produce clean hydrogen, along with other value-added products such as hydroxides. This work clearly sheds light on the potential utilization of industrial aluminum scrap as feedstock for producing clean hydrogen.

We used UAV-LiDAR technology and other advanced remote sensing techniques to evaluate mangrove rehabilitation projects along the eroding shoreline of the Upper Gulf of Thailand. Our results delineate the necessary biophysical conditions for successfully rehabilitating mangroves, establishing optimal conditions under which mangroves can naturally re-establish and thrive. Furthermore, we investigated the effectiveness of different coastal defense structures in fostering mangrove recolonization. Our analysis shows that nearshore breakwaters markedly outperform submerged breakwaters and bamboo fences, with a success rate of over 65% by significantly reducing wave energy that aids sediment trapping. These findings suggest that refinements in the configuration of coastal structures, including the elevation of breakwater crests and selective deployment of bamboo fences, will enhance mangrove rehabilitation success. These insights affirm the role of UAV-LiDAR surveys for optimizing mangrove restoration initiatives, thereby facilitating sustainable development for coastlines plagued by erosion. The insights gleaned offer a blueprint for bolstering the success rate of mangrove rehabilitation projects, directing them toward sustainable coastal development.

Achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) has garnered significant attention from academia and policymakers worldwide. In this study, we examine the impact of ICT, technological innovation (TI), and environmental policy stringency (EPS) on SDI, considering the moderating role of governance quality (GQI) and transport infrastructure (TIS). A comprehensive dataset of 17 advanced nations is utilized from 1996 to 2021. To capture the dynamic and extreme marginal impacts of these policy instruments on SDG attainment, we employ the advanced technique of Feasible Generalized Least Square (FGLS). The results demonstrate that ICT has a positive and significant effect on SDGs, particularly when combined with high levels of governance quality (GOV) and transport infrastructure (TIS). Likewise, TI has a positive impact on SDGs, especially in the presence of strong governance. Furthermore, EPS exhibits a positive association with SDGs. The findings also reveal that while governance hurts SDGs, this effect diminishes when combined with higher levels of ICT, TI, and EPS, and when TIS positively moderates the relationships. The robustness estimations using DOLS and PCSE methods validate the FGLS findings. These results underscore the importance of ICT, TI, and EPS in advancing sustainable development. Moreover, they highlight the significance of good governance and robust transport infrastructure in maximizing the positive effects of these factors. These findings hold implications for policymakers and stakeholders involved in promoting sustainable development.

Agriculture receives approximately 25 % of the annual global nitrogen input, 37 % of which subsequently runs off into adjacent low-order streams and surface water, where it may contribute to high nitrification and nitrous oxide (N2O). However, the mechanisms of nitrification and the pathways controlling N2O production in agricultural streams remain unknown. Here, we report that the third microbial ammonia oxidation process, complete ammonia oxidation (comammox), is widespread and contributes to important ammonia oxidation with low ammonia-N2O conversion in both basin- and continental-scale agricultural streams. The contribution of comammox to ammonia oxidation (21.5 ±â€¯2.3 %) was between that of bacterial (68.6 ±â€¯2.7 %) and archaeal (9.9 ±â€¯1.8 %) ammonia oxidation. Interestingly, N2O production by comammox (18.5 ±â€¯2.1 %) was higher than archaeal (10.5 ±â€¯1.9 %) but significantly lower than bacterial (70.2 ±â€¯2.6 %) ammonia oxidation. The first metagenome-assembled genome (MAG) of comammox bacteria from agricultural streams further revealed their potential extensive diverse and specific metabolism. Their wide habitats might be attributed to the diverse metabolism, i.e. harboring the functional gene of nitrate reduction to ammonia, while the lower N2O would be attributed to their lacking biological function to produce N2O. Our results highlight the importance of widespread comammox in agricultural streams, both for the fate of ammonia fertilizer and for climate change. However, it has not yet been routinely included in Earth system models and IPCC global assessments. Synopsis Widespread but overlooked comammox contributes to important ammonia oxidation but low N2O production, which were proved by the first comammox MAG found in agricultural streams.

This piece discusses the importance of sustainable education within the framework of the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. We emphasize the need to foster a lifelong love for learning by instilling curiosity, emotional bonds, and joy in students. We suggest simplifying teaching methods to maximize depth of understanding, integrating wonder and emotion into scientific education, promoting vertical exploration rather than just covering knowledge horizontally, and fostering resilience and independence through experiential learning. We also advocate for collaborative learning environments and incorporating real-world projects into education. Ultimately, the goal is to create spaces where students can explore, experience joy, and develop a lasting passion for learning.

Woody plants are encroaching across terrestrial ecosystems globally, and this has dramatic effects on how these systems function and the livelihoods of producers who rely on the land to support livestock production. Consequently, the removal of woody plants is promoted widely in the belief that it will reinstate former grasslands or open savanna. Despite this popular management approach to encroachment, we still have a relatively poor understanding of the effects of removal on society, and of alternative management practices that could balance the competing needs of pastoral production, biodiversity conservation and cultural values. This information is essential for maintaining both ecological and societal benefits in encroached systems under predicted future climate changes. In this review, we provide a comprehensive synthesis of the social-ecological perspectives of woody encroachment based on recent studies and global meta-analyses by assessing the ecological impacts of encroachment and its effects on sustainable development goals (SDGs) when woody plants are retained and when they are removed. We propose a working definition of woody encroachment based on species- and community-level characteristics; such a definition is needed to evaluate accurately the effects of encroachment. We show that encroachment is a natural process of succession rather than a sign of degradation, with encroachment resulting in an overall 8% increase in ecosystem multifunctionality. Removing woody plants can increase herbaceous plant richness, biomass and cover, but at the expense of biocrust cover. The effectiveness of woody plant removal depends on plant identity, and where, when and how they are removed. Under current management practices, either removal or retention of woody plants can induce trade-offs among ecosystem services, with no management practice maximising all SDGs [e.g. SDG2 (end hunger), SDG13 (climate change), SDG 15 (combat desertification)]. Given that encroachment of woody plants is likely to increase under future predicted hotter and drier climates, alternative management options such as carbon farming and ecotourism could be effective land uses for areas affected by encroachment.

In the Sub-Saharan region of Africa, access to safe drinking water remains limited in many countries. This study provides an overview of the quality of surface water and groundwater in rural and peri-urban areas of Madagascar, Uganda, and Rwanda. Selected physico-chemical parameters, inorganic species (including inorganic ions), and organic pollution indicators, such as total organic carbon, non-ionic surfactants, cationic surfactants, anionic surfactants, sum of phenolic compounds and formaldehyde, were analysed. Principal component analysis was applied to assess the variability of the water quality and identify regional dependencies. The inorganic ion composition in the majority of the studied samples meets WHO and EU requirements for drinking water intended for human consumption and poses no human health risk. However, an individual non-cancer-causing health index for nitrates and the values of Water Quality Index show a possible threat of ingesting the studied drinking water. The presence of surfactants (0.1-0.65 mgL-1), phenolic compounds (0.025-1.76 mgL-1) and formaldehyde (0.04-0.32 mgL-1) may also pose a risk to human, animal, and aquatic life. Additionally, in-situ measurements for E. coli and Total Coliforms conducted during the last field campaign in Madagascar (2022) revealed that all studied drinking water sources ranged from intermediate risk to unsafe. This result calls for the urgent need to enhance WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) services in the studied areas. The presence of both chemical and microbiological pollutants shows the need for the local authorities to develop and implement a catchment management plan to ensure the protection of water resources from potential pollution, and raise community awareness about the impact of human activity on water resources.

Early childhood is foundational for optimal and inclusive lifelong learning, health and well-being. Young children with disabilities face substantial risks of sub-optimal early childhood development (ECD), requiring targeted support to ensure equitable access to lifelong learning opportunities, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Although the Sustainable Development Goals, 2015-2030 (SDGs) emphasise inclusive education for children under 5 years with disabilities, there is no global strategy for achieving this goal since the launch of the SDGs. This paper explores a global ECD framework for children with disabilities based on a review of national ECD programmes from different world regions and relevant global ECD reports published since 2015. Available evidence suggests that any ECD strategy for young children with disabilities should consists of a twin-track approach, strong legislative support, guidelines for early intervention, family involvement, designated coordinating agencies, performance indicators, workforce recruitment and training, as well as explicit funding mechanisms and monitoring systems. This approach reinforces parental rights and liberty to choose appropriate support pathway for their children. We conclude that without a global disability-focussed ECD strategy that incorporates these key features under a dedicated global leadership, the SDGs vision and commitment for the world's children with disabilities are unlikely to be realised.

Municipal wastewater treatment systems use the chemical oxygen demand test (COD) to identify organic contaminants in industrial effluents that impede treatment due to their high concentration. This study reduced the COD levels in tannery wastewater using a multistage treatment process that included Fenton oxidation, chemical coagulation, and nanotechnology based on a synthetic soluble COD standard solution. At an acidic pH of 5, Fenton oxidation reduces the COD concentration by approximately 79%. It achieves this by combining 10 mL/L of H2O2 and 0.1 g/L of FeCl2. Furthermore, the author selected the FeCl3 coagulant for the coagulation process based on the best results of comparisons between different coagulants. At pH 8.5, the coagulation dose of 0.15 g/L achieved the maximum COD removal efficiency of approximately 56.7%. Finally, nano bimetallic Fe/Cu was used to complete the degradation and adsorption of the remaining organic pollutants. The XRD, SEM, and EDX analyses proved the formation of Fe/Cu nanoparticles. A dose of 0.09 g/L Fe/Cu NPs, 30 min of contact time, and a stirring rate of 200 rpm achieve a maximum removal efficiency of about 93% of COD at pH 7.5. The kinetics studies were analyzed using pseudo-first-order P.F.O., pseudo-second-order P.S.O., and intraparticle diffusion models. The P.S.O. showed the best fit among the kinetic models, with an R2 of 0.998. Finally, the authors recommended that technique for highly contaminated industrial effluents treatment for agriculture or industrial purposes.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant public health problem. The burden of CKD in children and adolescents in India is not well described. We used data from the recent Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey (CNNS) to estimate the prevalence of impaired kidney function (IKF) and its determinants in children and adolescents between the ages of 5 and 19. METHODS: CNNS 2016-18 adopted a multi-stage sampling design using probability proportional to size sampling procedure after geographical stratification of urban and rural areas. Serum creatinine was tested once in 24,690 children and adolescents aged 5-19 years. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was derived using the revised Schwartz equation. The eGFR value below 60 ml/min/1.73 m2 is defined as IKF. Bivariate analysis was done to depict the weighted prevalence, and multivariable logistic regression examined the predictors of IKF. RESULTS: The mean eGFR in the study population was 113.3 + 41.4 mL/min/1.73 m2. The overall prevalence of IKF was 4.9%. The prevalence in the 5-9, 10-14, and 15-19 year age groups was 5.6%, 3.4% and 5.2%, respectively. Regression analysis showed age, rural residence, non-reserved social caste, less educated mothers, Islam religion, children with severe stunting or being overweight/obese, and residence in Southern India to be predictors of IKF. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of IKF among children and adolescents in India is high compared to available global estimates. In the absence of repeated eGFR-based estimates, these nationally representative estimates are intriguing and call for further assessment of socio-demographic disparities, genetics, and risk behaviours to have better clinical insights and public health preparedness.

The distribution of China's energy resources is concentrated in the central and western regions, whereas the energy demand is predominantly centered in the eastern regions. Under the ambitious "carbon neutrality" goal, how to effectively quantify and respond to the impact of this energy "endowment-demand" distortion (EEDD) on economy and environment has become a key issue. We introduce an EEDD index that quantifies the distortion characteristics of China's energy endowment and demand. Based on the EEDD index, a panel vector auto regression-generalized method of moments (PVAR-GMM) model is adopted to assess the interactive effects between regional EEDD and sustainable development variables. The obtained results indicate that the energy endowment-demand distortions are progressively worsening across most provinces. Interestingly, we discover that the EEDD has significant beneficial effects on regional sustainable development. Moreover, the EEDD is found to be significantly influenced by the sustainability-related variables. These impacts between EEDD and sustainable development variables demonstrate significant regional heterogeneity. This study provides crucial empirical evidence for advancing the comprehensive and sustainable development of regional energy, environment, and economy.

Tsetse flies are vectors of the parasite trypanosoma that cause the neglected tropical diseases human and animal African trypanosomosis. Semiochemicals play important roles in the biology and ecology of tsetse flies. Previous reviews have focused on olfactory-based attractants of tsetse flies. Here, we present an overview of the identification of repellents and their development into control tools for tsetse flies. Both natural and synthetic repellents have been successfully tested in laboratory and field assays against specific tsetse fly species. Thus, these repellents presented as innovative mobile tools offer opportunities for their use in integrated disease management strategies.

RESUMO

Formalin is the international gold-standard fixative in pathology laboratories. However it is not the ideal one considering its deleterious effects on individuals and the environment. Complete formalin removal or even substitution does not seem possible in the near future. In this update, we present various tools allowing to integrate the use of formalin into an ecocare approach. Among them, formalin recycling according to the protocol developed by the University Hospital of Bordeaux is simple to implement and delivers rapid and significant results, allowing pathology professionals to meet the sustainable development objectives included in the France 2030 agenda.

The challenges posed by unsustainable practices in today's economy underscore the urgent need for a transition toward a circular economy (CE) and a holistic supply chain (SC) perspective. Benchmarking plays a pivotal role in managing circular SCs, offering a metric to gauge progress. However, the lack of consensus on the optimal benchmarking approach hampers effective implementation of circular business practices. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic review of the literature, identifying 29 pertinent publications. The analysis revealed 30 unique attributes and sub-attributes for benchmarking circularity, which were clustered into five main attributes. The main attributes are goals, subjects, key performance indicators (KPIs), data sources, and evaluation methods, while the sub-attributes are organised as features of the main attributes and depicted as a feature model. Drawing from selected publications, we illustrated each feature with examples. Our model offers a comprehensive benchmarking reference for circularity and will be a valuable tool for managers in the transition toward circularity. Supply chains seeking to benchmark their transition to circularity can apply the reference model to ensure that their benchmarking strategy is consistent with state-of-the-art knowledge. By providing a generic circularity benchmarking approach that is valid for diverse economic sectors, our findings contribute to theoretical efforts to address the lack of generic frameworks for CE.

Background: This article presents a research study that aims to explore sustainable approaches for developing professional skills in vocational education students in Thailand. This is the second phase of the research, which utilizes a qualitative research methodology. Methodology: The key informants in this study are administrators of vocational education institutions, teachers, and students currently enrolled in vocational education institutions in Thailand, totaling 36 participants. The research uses a purposive sampling method and snowball sampling method. Data collection methods include document analysis, in-depth structured interviews, and observation. The results of the interviews are analyzed, and the content analysis is summarized. The research process consists of 4 steps: 1) literature review, 2) data collection, 3) data analysis, and 4) verification and confirmation. Results: The research findings highlight several key considerations, including: 1) factors influencing the development of professional skills among vocational education students, such as curriculum design, support and counseling, practical training in workplaces, interactive learning, problem-solving and analytical thinking skills development, practical learning, and supportive learning environments, 2) approaches for sustainable professional skill development involve employing the appropriate approaches for self-development. The steps include setting clear goals and plans, active learning and training, technology skill development, experiential learning, problem-solving skill development, participation in professional activities, self-reflection, and continuous self-improvement. Conclusion: These approaches aim to enhance the competencies of vocational education students, ensuring quality and efficiency as part of lifelong learning and sustainable development.

Recycling has become a critical response to the goals of reaching a carbon peak and achieving carbon neutrality. This study explores the effects of consumer free-riding behavior, the quality of recycling services, and the costs of channel transfers on the profitability of manufacturers and retailers in a dual-channel closed-loop supply chain (CLSC), focusing on the importance of recycling practices for carbon neutrality. Using consumer utility theory and a Stackelberg game model, we analyze the dynamics among these factors. Our results show that: (i) Consumer free-riding behavior slightly increases market demand and recycling volumes, enhancing profitability for both manufacturers and retailers in the dual-channel CLSC. (ii) The quality of recycling services and the transfer costs associated with retailer free-riding behavior jointly influence the profits of manufacturers and retailers. (iii) The effect of free-riding behavior on recycling services affects both forward sales and reverse recycling channels equally. This study provides valuable insights for decision-making in sustainable development practices in the recycling sector, significantly contributing to the goal of achieving carbon neutrality.
