RESUMO

Numerous body locations have been utilized to obtain an accurate body temperature. While some are commonly used, their accuracy, response time, invasiveness varies greatly, and determines their potential clinical and/or research use. This review discusses human body temperature locations, their accuracy, ease of use, advantages, and drawbacks. We explain the concept of core body temperature and which of the locations achieve the best correlation to this temperature. The body locations include axilla, oral cavity, rectum, digestive and urinary tracts, skin, tympanic, nasopharynx, esophagus, and pulmonary artery. The review also discusses the latest temperature technologies, heat-flux technology and telemetric ingestible temperature pills, and the body locations used to validate these devices. Rectal and esophageal measurements are the most frequently used.

(1) Infrared thermography of the inner canthus of the eye has emerged as a promising tool for temperature screening and fever diagnosis. Its non-invasive nature lends itself well to mass screening in diverse settings such as schools, public transport, and healthcare facilities. Swift and accurate temperature assessment plays a pivotal role in the early identification of potential fever cases, facilitating timely isolation, testing, and treatment, thereby mitigating the risk of disease transmission. Nonetheless, the reliability of this approach in the pediatric population, especially when compared to conventional thermometry methods, remains unexplored. This preliminary study aimed to evaluate the concordance between the temperature of the inner canthus of the eye (Tic,eye), referred to as the brain-eyelid thermal tunnel (BTT°), with axillary and tympanic methods in afebrile children. (2) Methods: A cohort of 36 children, matched in a 1:1 ratio for gender and age, underwent comprehensive assessments encompassing anthropometric data, blood pressure evaluations, axillary (Tax) and tympanic (Tty) temperature measurements, as well as BTT° infrared thermography. (3) Results: The findings revealed a high level of concordance among the tympanic, axillary, and BTT° measurement methods. Bland-Altman plots showed that the bias was minimal, and no statistically significant differences were observed when comparing BTT° with axillary (p = 0.136) and tympanic (p = 0.268) measurements. Passing-Bablok regression scatter plots further confirmed the agreement, aligning the fitted regression line closely with the identity line for both axillary versus BTT° and tympanic (Tty) versus BTT° comparisons. (4) Conclusions: This study holds significant implications for public health, especially in the context of infectious disease outbreaks such as COVID-19. BTT° infrared thermography of the inner canthus of the eye (Tic,eye) reliably measures body temperature in afebrile children in controlled settings; nevertheless, its practical application necessitates the adaptation of biothermodynamic parameters to accommodate diverse environmental conditions.

We use 395 nm ultraviolet radiation to excite the matrix of barium hafnate doped with europium ions to develop an optical temperature sensor. Luminescent analysis as a function of temperature was performed in the physiological range. The Emission spectra showed significant variations in luminescent intensity at all transitions, obtaining a relative sensitivity of 1574.3/T2, when the temperature of the material increases from 289.7 to 323.8 K. The 5D0 -> 7F2 transition presented the better temperature resolution (1.1 × 102 K).

In this work, we synthesized a polydimethylsiloxane membrane containing two emitter groups chemically attached to the membrane structure. For this, we attached the anthracene group and the [Eu(bzac)3] complex as blue and red emitters, respectively, in the matrix via hydrosilylation reactions. The synthesized membrane can be used as a bifunctional temperature and oxygen ratiometric optical probe by analyzing the effects that temperature changes and oxygen levels produce on the ratio of anthracene and europium(III) emission components. As a temperature probe, the system is operational in the 203-323 K range, with an observed maximum relative sensitivity of 2.06% K-1 at 290 K and temperature uncertainties below 0.1 K over all the operational range. As an oxygen probe, we evaluated the ratiometric response at 25, 30, 35, and 40 °C. These results show an interesting approach to obtaining bifunctional ratiometric optical probes and also suggest the presence of an anthracene → europium(III) energy transfer, even though there is no chemical bonding between species.

RESUMEN: Los parámetros antropométricos para la estimación de la composición corporal son variables comúnmente utilizadas en la identificación de factores de riesgo cardiovascular (FRCV). En este sentido la termografía por infrarrojo (TI) podría ser utilizada como una herramienta que aporte información relevante en la evaluación de los FRCV mediante la estimación de la temperatura superficial en la piel y su relación con medidas antropométricas asociadas a estos factores. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la relación de la temperatura superficial de hombres adultos con variables antropométricas asociadas a FRCV. Participaron 64 hombres sanos de 26,4 ± 7,8 años, 76,1 ± 13,3 kg de masa corporal, 171,3 ± 7,2 cm de estatura y 25,9 ± 3,7 kg/m2 de índice de masa corporal (IMC). Se realizaron evaluaciones antropométricas de 6 pliegues cutáneos (tricipital, subescapular, supra-espinal, abdominal, muslo medio y pantorrilla), circunferencia de cintura y cadera, además de mediciones de la temperatura superficial mediante TI en las zonas de medición. Se encontraron relaciones significativas negativas entre la temperatura superficial y las mediciones de los pliegues cutáneos a nivel subescapular, supra-espinal, muslo y pantorrilla (p < 0,01; r = -0,39 a -0,55). La temperatura promedio de la TI de los 6-pliegues, y todas las TI individuales de los pliegues presentaron correlaciones negativas significativas con el IMC, perímetro de cintura, índice cintura cadera, índice cintura estatura y la sumatoria de 6 pliegues cutáneos (p < 0,05; r = -0,35 a -0,65). Se puede concluir que existe una relación entre la temperatura superficial de la piel y algunos parámetros antropométricos de la composición corporal que muestran estar asociados a FRCV, pudiendo ser la TI una herramienta útil para complementar la evaluación de estos parámetros.


SUMMARY: Anthropometric parameters for the estimation of body composition are variables commonly used in the identification of cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs). In this regard, infrared thermography (IT) could be used as a tool that provides relevant information in the CVRFs assessment by estimating skin surface temperature and its relationship with the anthropometric measures associated with these factors. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship of skin surface temperature in adult men with anthropometric variables associated with CVRFs. The study gathered sixty-four healthy men aged 26.4 ± 7.8 years, 76.1 ± 13.3 kg body mass, 171.3 ± 7.2 cm height and 25.9 ± 3.7 kg/m2 body mass index (BMI). Anthropometric assessments of 6 skinfolds (tricipital, subscapular, suprascapular, supraspinal, abdominal, mid-thigh, and calf), waist and hip circumference were conducted, as well as IT surface temperature measurements at the measurement areas. Significant negative relationships were found between surface temperature and skinfold measurements at the subscapular, supraspinal, thigh and calf levels (p < 0.01; r = -0.39 to -0.55). The average IT temperature of the 6- folds and all individual folds IT had significant negative correlations with BMI, waist circumference, waist hip ratio, waist height ratio, and the sum of 6 skinfolds (p < 0.05; r = -0.35 to -0.65). There is a relationship between skin surface temperature and some body composition anthropometric parameters that indicate and association with CVRFs, therefore, IT may be a useful tool to complement the assessment of these parameters.

Proteins are involved in numerous cellular activities such as transport and catalysis. Misfolding during biosynthesis and malfunctioning as a molecular machine may lead to physiological disorders and metabolic problems. Protein folding and mechanical work may be viewed as thermodynamic energetically favorable processes in which stochastic nonequilibrium intermediate states may be present with conditions such as thermal fluctuations. In my opinion, measuring those thermal fluctuations may be a way to access the energy exchange between the protein and the physiological environment and to better understand how those nonequilibrium states may influence the misfolding/folding process and the efficiency of the molecular engine cycle. Here, I discuss luminescence thermometry as a possible way to measure those temperature fluctuations from a single-molecule experimental perspective with its current technical limitations and challenges.

There is a large interest in luminescent materials for application as temperature sensors. In this scenario, we investigate the performance of neodymium-doped alkaline-earth fluoride (Nd3+ :MF2 ; M=Ba, Ca, Sr) crystalline powders prepared by combustion synthesis for optical temperature-sensing applications based on the luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) technique. We observe that the near-infrared luminescence spectral profile of Nd3+ changes with the temperature in a way that its behavior is suitable for optical thermometry operation within the first biological window. We also observe that the thermometric sensitivities of all studied samples change depending on the spectral integration range used in the LIR analysis. Nd3+ :CaF2 presents the largest sensitivity values, with a maximum absolute sensitivity of 6.5×10-3 /K at 824 K and a relative sensitivity of 1.71 %/K at human-body temperature (310 K). The performance of CaF2 for optical thermometry is superior to that of ß-NaYF4 , a standard material commonly used for optical bioimaging and temperature sensing, and on par with the most efficient oxide nanostructured materials. The use of thermometry data to help understand structural properties via Judd-Ofelt intensity standard parameters is also discussed.

Resumo Objetivo: analisar o efeito da termometria podálica cutânea em pessoas com diabetes mellitus, comparado com prevenção padrão de úlceras podálicas adotada nesses pacientes. Método: revisão sistemática com metanálise. Protocolo registrado na PROSPERO (CRD42020202686). Foram seguidas as recomendações do Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Busca realizada nas fontes de dados: SCOPUS, Web of Science, MEDLINE via PubMed, MEDLINE via EBSCO, MEDLINE via Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, LILACS via Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde, Google Scholar, Biblioteca Digital Brasileira de Teses e Dissertações, Catálogo de Teses & Dissertações-Capes, Open Grey e ProQuest Dissertations and Theses. O risco de viés foi avaliado pela Cochrane Collaboration Risk of Bias Tool (RoB 2), a metanálise no software Review Manager 5.4 e a Certeza da evidência no sistema Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation. Resultados: dos 670 registros, cinco artigos eram elegíveis. A metanálise foi calculada para o desfecho prevenção da incidência de úlceras de pé diabético, com sumarização de efeito (RR 0,53; IC95% 0,29, 0,96; p=0,02), com certeza da evidência moderada. Conclusão: a termometria mostrou efeito protetor na incidência de úlceras de pé diabético, se comparada ao cuidado podálico padrão.


Abstract Objective: to analyze the effect of cutaneous foot thermometry in people with Diabetes Mellitus, compared with the standard prevention of foot ulcers adopted in these patients. Method: a systematic review with meta-analysis. Protocol registered with PROSPERO (CRD42020202686). The recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) were followed. The search was performed in the following data sources: SCOPUS, Web of Science, MEDLINE via PubMed, MEDLINE via EBSCO, MEDLINE via Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, LILACS via Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde, Google Scholar, Biblioteca Digital Brasileira de Teses e Dissertações, Catálogo de Teses & Dissertações-Capes, Open Grey and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses. The risk of bias was assessed by the Cochrane Collaboration Risk of Bias Tool (RoB 2), the meta-analysis was performed in the Review Manager 5.4 software and the Certainty of evidence in the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation system. Results: of the 670 records, five articles were eligible. The meta-analysis was calculated for the prevention of the incidence of diabetic foot ulcers outcome, with effect summarization (RR 0.53; 95%CI 0.29-0.96; p=0.02), with certainty of moderate evidence. Conclusion: thermometry showed a protective effect on the incidence of diabetic foot ulcers when compared to standard foot care.

Conclusión: la termometría mostró un efecto protector sobre la incidencia de úlceras del pie diabético en comparación con el cuidado estándar del pie.

RESUMEN: Es reconocido que un incremento de la grasa corporal subcutánea es capaz de alterar el patrón de liberación de calor a través de la piel. Sin embargo, la asociación con otras variables antropométricas y la influencia del gasto energético en reposo (GER), han sido escasamente abordadas. Este estudio determinó la relación de la temperatura de la piel con variables antropométricas, peso corporal y GER de hombres adultos sanos. Participaron en el estudio un total de 24 varones sanos de 33,9±8,7 años de edad, 85,8±9,7 kg de peso corporal, 172,5±6,1 cm de estatura y 28,9±3,4 kg/m2 de índice de masa corporal (IMC). Se realizaron evaluaciones antropométricas, de termografía por infrarrojo y del GER por calorimetría indirecta, con analizador de gases. La temperatura promedio de los 6-pliegues, y las individuales (toracoabdominales, supra-espinal y abdominal), tuvieron correlaciones negativas con el IMC, perímetro de cintura, índice cintura cadera, índice cintura estatura, y la sumatoria de 6 pliegues; todos con p<0,05. Además, la temperatura del pliegue supraespinal tuvo una correlación negativa con el porcentaje de masa adiposa (MA%), r=0,47(p=0,0194). La MA% y el IMC tuvieron correlaciones negativas con el GER, con r=-0,59 (p=0,002) y r=-0,53 (p=0,006), respectivamente. El promedio de temperatura de los 6-pliegues presentó una correlación positiva con el GER (r=0,44; p=0,02). La composición corporal causa una modificación en los patrones de termografía superficial local, sin afectar la relación entre el promedio de la temperatura superficial total con el GER, pudiendo éste ser un factor predictor.


SUMMARY: It is known that an increase in the subcutaneous body fat can alter the pattern of heat release through the skin. However, the relationship with other anthropometric variables and the influence of the Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) have scarcely been addressed. To determine the relationship of skin temperature with different anthropometric variables, body weight, and the REE of healthy adult males. The participants were a total of 24 healthy males of 33.9±8.7 years-old, 85.8±9.7 kg of body mass, 172.5±6.1 cm of height, and 28.9±3.4 kg/m2 of body mass index (BMI). Anthropometric, infrared thermography, and indirect calorimetry REE assessments were performed with gas analyzer. The six skinfolds average temperature, as well as the individual skinfolds (thoracoabdominal, supraspinal, and abdominal), had negative correlations with the BMI, waist circumference, waist- hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio, and the sum of the six skinfolds, all with p<0.05. In addition, the temperature of the supraspinal fold had a negative correlation with the percentage of fat mass (MA%), r=0.47 (p=0.0194). MA% and BMI had negative correlations with REE, with r=-0.59 (p=0.002) and r=-0.53 (p=0.006), respectively. The six-skinfolds average temperature presented a positive correlation with the REE (r=0.44; p=0.02). Body composition changes cause a modification in the local surface thermography patterns without affecting the relationship between the average total body surface temperature with the REE; therefore, this could act as a predictive factor.

The skin prick test is used to diagnose patients' sensitization to antigens through a mediated IgE response. It is a practical and quick exam, but its diagnosis depends on instruments for measuring the allergic response and observer's interpretation. The conventional method for inferring about the allergic reaction is performed from the dimensions of the wheals, which are measured using a ruler or a caliper. To make this diagnosis less dependent on human interpretation, the present study proposes two alternative methods to infer about the allergic reaction: computational determination of the wheal area and a study of the temperature variation of the patient's skin in the puncture region. For this purpose, prick test using histamine was performed on 20 patients randomly selected. The areas were determined by the conventional method using the dimensions of the wheals measured with a digital caliper 30 min after the puncture. The wheal areas were also determined by a Python algorithm using photographs of the puncture region obtained with a smartphone. A variable named circularity deviation was also determined for each analyzed wheal. The temperature variation was monitored using an infrared temperature sensor, which collected temperature data for 30 min. All results were statistically compared or correlated. The results showed that the computational method to infer the wheal areas did not differ significantly from the areas determined by the conventional method (p-value = 0.07585). Temperature monitoring revealed that there was a consistent temperature increase in the first minutes after the puncture, followed by stabilization, so that the data could be adjusted by a logistic equation (R2 = 0.96). This adjustment showed that the optimal time to measure the temperature is 800 s after the puncture, when the temperature stabilization occurs. The results have also shown that this temperature stabilization has a significant positive correlation with wheal area (p-value = 0.0015). Thus, we concluded that the proposed computational method is more accurate to infer the wheal area when compared to the traditional method, and that the temperature may be used as an alternative parameter to infer about the allergic reaction.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate, through videothermometry, the temperature variation in the hearts of rabbits, that underwent induced myocardial ischemia and reperfusion. RESULTS: A total of 20 female rabbits were divided into two groups: a treated group and a sham group, the treatment group underwent 5 min of cardiac arrest and reperfusion, using the inflow occlusion technique. Throughout the experiment, the animals were monitored by videothermometry, observing the thermal variations of the myocardial tissue. During the experiment, at different times, blood gas tests and tests to evaluate the lactate concentrations were performed. At the end of the experiment, each heart was submitted to histopathological evaluation. In the treated group, there was a reduction in temperature of the myocardial tissue during the circulatory arrest compared to the sham group. Additionally, a colder area next to the caudal vena cava ostium and the right atrium was observed. Notably, despite the 5 min of cardiac arrest in the treated group, both the lactate and bicarbonate levels were maintained without significant variation. However, there was an increase in PaCO2 and pH reduction, featuring respiratory acidosis. In relation to the histopathological study, the presence of hydropic degeneration in the myocardium of animals in the treated group was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Based on these results, the videothermometry was efficient in identifying the range of myocardial tissue temperature, suggesting that the first areas to suffer due to cardiac arrest were the caudal vena cava ostium and the right atrium. However, in regard to the angiographic coronary thermography, the study was not feasible due to the small size of the coronary. There was no variation between the groups regarding the presence of myocardial infarction, myocardial congestion, myocardial edema and myocardial hemorrhage.

La meningitis meningocóccica continua siendo un problema de salud en diferentes países y para la prevención de esta enfermedad se han obtenido diferentes vacunas. La vacuna VA-MENGOC-BC® ha constituido ser eficaz y segura en la prevención de la meningitis meningocóccica contra los serogrupos B y C. Esta ha demostrado buena estabilidad en el tiempo sin cambiar su calidad como producto; fue conservada a estante durante 24 y 36 meses a temperaturas de 4 a 8 °C. Se evaluó su posible potencial toxicológico a través de un estudio de tolerancia local en ratas Sprague Dawley para extender su vida útil. Los animales inmunizados se observaron diariamente para evaluar síntomas locales y sistémicos de toxicidad. Se realizaron evaluaciones del peso corporal, consumo de agua y alimento, termometría, musculometría e irritabilidad dérmica por el método de Draize. Se realizaron estudios anatomopatológicos periódicos para observar posibles efectos adversos. No se observaron síntomas de toxicidad ni muertes. No se encontraron diferencias entre los grupos experimentales en cuanto al peso corporal, el consumo de agua y de alimentos, no se evidenció fiebre, ni irritabilidad local. Anatomopatológicamente a nivel del punto de inoculación se observaron procesos granulomatosos de tipo macrofágicos característicos en las vacunas que contienen hidróxido de aluminio. Estos resultados permitieron concluir que la vacuna VA-MENGOC-BC® que permaneció en estante durante 24 y 36 meses no evidenció efectos adversos locales, ni sistémicos en las ratas(AU)


Meningococcal meningitis continues to be a health problem in different countries and different vaccines have been obtained for the prevention of this disease. VA-MENGOC-BC® vaccine has been effective and safe in the prevention of meningococcal meningitis against serogroups B and C. This has shown good stability over time without changing its quality as a product; it was stored on a shelf for 24 and 36 months at temperatures of 4 to 8 °C. Their possible toxicological potential was evaluated through a local tolerance study in Sprague Dawley rats. Immunized animals were observed daily to evaluate local and systemic toxicity symptoms. Body weight, water and feed intake, thermometry, musculometry were performed and dermal irritability by the Draize method. Anatomopathological studies to observe possible adverse effects were made. No symptoms of toxicity or deaths were observed. No differences were found between the experimental groups in terms of body weight, water and food consumption, no fever or local irritability was evident. Anatomopathologically no lesions of diagnostic value were observed, at the site of inoculation, granulomatous processes of macrophagic type characteristic in vaccines containing aluminum hydroxide were observed. These results allowed us to conclude that the VA-MENGOC-BC® vaccine that remained on the shelf for 24 and 36 months did not show any local or systemic effects in rats(AU)

Upconversion is a non-linear optical phenomenon by which low energy photons stimulate the emission of higher energy ones. Applications of upconversion materials are wide and cover diverse areas such as bio-imaging, solar cells, optical thermometry, displays, and anti-counterfeiting technologies, among others. When these materials are synthesized in the form of nanoparticles, the effect of temperature on the optical emissions depends critically on their size, creating new opportunities for innovation. However, it remains a challenge to achieve upconversion materials that can be easily processed for their direct application or for the manufacture of optoelectronic devices. In this work, we developed nanocomposite materials based on upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) dispersed in a polymer matrix of either polylactic acid or poly(methyl methacrylate). These materials can be processed from solution to form thin film multilayers, which can be patterned by applying soft-lithography techniques to produce the desired features in the micro-scale, and luminescent tracks when used as nanocomposite inks. The high homogeneity of the films, the uniform distribution of the UCNPs and the easygoing deposition process are the distinctive features of such an approach. Furthermore, the size-dependent thermal properties of UCNPs can be exploited by a proper formulation of the nanocomposites in order to develop materials with high thermal sensitivity and a thermochromic response. Here, we thus present different strategies for designing optical devices through patterning techniques, ink dispensing and multilayer stacking. By applying upconverting nanocomposites with unique thermal responses, local heating effects in designed nanostructures were observed.

Purpose:To evaluate, in rats, the open field videothermometry in real time while performing left pneumonectomy for early diagnosis of cardiopulmonary changes.Methods:Twelve non-specific pathogen-free Wistar rats were randomly allocated into two groups; pneumectomy group (GP) and sham surgery group (GS). Mean arterial pressure, videothermometry in real time, of the right lung, and histopathological analysis of the remaining lung were evaluated in all animals.Results:Videothermometry in real time allowed identification of temperature variance of right lung after pneumectomy, indicating a significant decrease in temperature during evaluation. There was a statistical difference between M0 and M1, M1 and M2 and M0 and M2 (p<0.004) in GS, and significant difference between M0 and M1, M1 and M2, and M2 and M0 with p<0.0001 in GP.Conclusions:Left pneumonectomy in rats shows initial histopathological changes after 60 minutes of its completion, indicating a possible compensation beginning. The open-field videothermometry in real time proved to be efficient identifying the temperature changes of the remaining lung.(AU)

Research into obtaining a fast, valid, reliable and non-invasive measure of core temperature is of interest in many disciplinary fields. Occupational and sports medicine research has attempted to determine a non-invasive proxy for core temperature particularly when access to participants is limited and thermal safety is of a concern due to protective encapsulating clothing, hot ambient environments and/or high endogenous heat production during athletic competition. This investigation aimed to determine the validity of inner canthus of the eye temperature (TEC) as an alternate non-invasive measure of intestinal core temperature (TC) during rest, exercise and post-exercise conditions. Twelve physically active males rested for 30min prior to exercise, performed 60min of aerobic exercise at 60% V̇O2max and passively recovered a further 60min post-exercise. TEC and TC were measured at 5min intervals during each condition. Mean differences between TEC and TC were 0.61°C during pre-exercise, -1.78°C during exercise and -1.00°C during post-exercise. The reliability between the methods was low in the pre-exercise (ICC=0.49 [-0.09 to 0.82]), exercise (ICC=-0.14 [-0.65 to 0.44]) and post-exercise (ICC=-0.25 [-0.70 to 0.35]) conditions. In conclusion, poor agreement was observed between the TEC values measured through IRT and TC measured through a gastrointestinal telemetry pill. Therefore, TEC is not a valid substitute measurement to gastrointestinal telemetry pill in sports and exercise science settings.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot neuropathy (DFN) is one of the most important complications of diabetes mellitus; its early diagnosis and intervention can prevent foot ulcers and the need for amputation. Thermometry, measuring the temperature of the feet, is a promising emerging modality for diabetic foot ulcer prevention. However, patient compliance with at-home monitoring is concerning. Delivering messages to remind patients to perform thermometry and foot care might be helpful to guarantee regular foot monitoring. This trial was designed to compare the incidence of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) between participants who receive thermometry alone and those who receive thermometry as well as mHealth (SMS and voice messaging) over a year-long study period. METHODS/DESIGN: This is an evaluator-blinded, randomized, 12-month trial. Individuals with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus, aged between 18-80 years, having a present dorsalis pedis pulse in both feet, are in risk group 2 or 3 using the diabetic foot risk classification system (as specified by the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot), have an operating cell phone or a caregiver with an operating cell phone, and have the ability to provide informed consent will be eligible to participate in the study. Recruitment will be performed in diabetes outpatient clinics at two Ministry of Health tertiary hospitals in Lima, Peru. INTERVENTIONS: participants in both groups will receive education about foot care at the beginning of the study and they will be provided with a thermometry device (TempStat™). TempStat™ is a tool that captures a thermal image of the feet, which, depending on the temperature of the feet, shows different colors. In this study, if a participant notes a single yellow image or variance between one foot and the contralateral foot, they will be prompted to notify a nurse to evaluate their activity within the previous 2 weeks and make appropriate recommendations. In addition to thermometry, participants in the intervention arm will receive an mHealth component in the form of SMS and voice messages as reminders to use the thermometry device, and instructions to promote foot care. OUTCOMES: the primary outcome is foot ulceration, evaluated by a trained nurse, occurring at any point during the study. DISCUSSION: This study has two principal contributions towards the prevention of DFU. First, the introduction of messages to promote self-management of diabetes foot care as well as using reminders as a strategy to improve adherence to daily home-based measurements. Secondly, the implementation of a thermometry-based strategy complemented by SMS and voice messages in an LMIC setting, with wider implications for scalability. ABSTRACT: The present study provides the first information about the safety of a new influenza viral vector vaccine expressing the Brucella ribosomal protein L7/L12 or Omp16 containing the adjuvant Montanide Gel01 in pregnant heifers. Immunization of pregnant heifers was conducted via the conjunctival (n=10) or subcutaneous (n=10) route using cross prime and booster vaccination schedules at an interval of 28 days. The vector vaccine was evaluated in comparison with positive control groups vaccinated with B. abortus S19 (n=10) or B. abortus RB51 (n=10) and a negative (PBS+Montanide Gel01; n=10) control group. Clinical studies, thermometry, assessment of local reactogenicity and observation of abortion showed that the vector vaccine via the conjunctival or subcutaneous route was completely safe for pregnant heifers compared to the commercial vaccines B. abortus S19 or B. abortus RB51. The only single adverse event was the formation of infiltration at the site of subcutaneous injection; this reaction was not observed for the conjunctival route.


RESUMO: O presente estudo fornece as primeiras informações sobre a segurança de uma nova vacina usando o vetor viral influenza para expressar as proteínas de Brucella L7/L12 ou Omp16, contendo o adjuvante Montanide Gel01 em novilhas prenhes. A imunização de novilhas prenhes foi realizada através das vias conjuntiva (n=10) ou subcutânea (n=10), empregadas na primovacinação e na dose de reforço. O intervalo foi de 28 dias. A vacina empregando o vetor foi comparada com os grupos de controle positivo, vacinados com B. abortus B19 (n=10) ou B. abortus RB51 (n=10) e um grupo de controle negativo (PBS + Montanide Gel01; n=10). Os estudos clínicos, termometria, reação local e observação do aborto mostraram que a vacina empregando o vetor, aplicada pela via conjuntival ou subcutânea, foi completamente segura para novilhas prenhes, em comparação com as vacinas comerciais B. abortus B19 ou B. abortus RB51. O único efeito adverso foi a formação de infiltrado no local da administração subcutânea; essa reação não foi observada no grupo vacinado pela via conjuntival.

ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze the association between sociodemographic, clinical, operative and environmental characteristics with hypothermia events, measured intraoperatively by tympanic and temporal thermometers in adult patients undergoing elective abdominal surgery with visceral exposure. Method: prospective quantitative, correlational, observational study. Data were collected by means of structured instrument containing the variables: age, Body Mass Index; American Society of Anesthesiologists class; type of anesthesia; time of surgery; tympanic and temporal temperature; temperature and relative humidity of the surgical room. Temperatures were assessed by methods of tympanic and temporal measurement in 63 patients. The data analysis sought an association between hypothermia and patient characteristics, type of anesthesia, surgical environment, according to the method of measurement and surgical time. Results: Among the 63 patients, 15 (23.8%) had hypothermia. Of the total (n=15; 100%) number of hypothermic patients, 13 (80%) had mild hypothermia. Moderate hypothermia was identified only by temporal thermometry in three (20%) patients. Severe hypothermia was not identified, and in two (13.3%) patients the hypothermia was identified only by temporal thermometry. Hypothermia had a statistically significant association only with age (p=0.0027) and sex (p=0.015), when measuring tympanic temperature. Conclusion: Only sex and age showed correlation with hypothermia during surgery measured by tympanic thermometry; no variable influenced hypothermia measured by temporal thermometry.


RESUMEN Objetivo: analizar la asociación entre las características sociodemográficas, clínicas, operatorias y ambientales con la ocurrencia de hipotermia medida por medio de termómetros timpánicos y temporales, en pacientes adultos en el trans-operatorio sometidos a cirugías abdominales electivas con exposición visceral. Métodos: estudio observacional, prospectivo, cuantitativo, correlacional. Los datos fueron recolectados mediante instrumento estructurado conteniendo las variables: edad; índice de massa corporal; classificación American Society of Anesthesiologists; tipo de anestesia; tiempo de la cirugía; temperatura timpánica y temporal; temperatura y humedad relativa a la sala quirúrgica. Fueron medidas las temperaturas por los métodos de afección timpánico y temporal en 63 pacientes. En el análisis de los datos se buscó la asociación de la hipotermia con las características de los pacientes, del tipo de anestesia, del ambiente quirúrgico segundo el método de afección y del tiempo quirúrgico. Resultado: de los 63 pacientes, 15 (23,8%) presentaron hipotermia. Del total (n=15; 100%) de pacientes hipotérmicos, 13 (80%) presentaron hipotermia leve. La hipotermia moderada fue identificada apenas por la termometría temporal, en tres (20%) pacientes. No hubo hipotermia grave y en dos (13,3%) pacientes a la hipotermia ocurrió apenas en la medida de la termometría temporal. En la relación de las variables, identificación que la hipotermia tuvo asociación estadísticamente significante solamente con la edad (p=0,0027) y el sexo (p=0,015), en la afección de la temperatura timpánica. Conclusión: apenas el sexo y la edad interfirieron en la hipotermia en el trans-operatorio por la termometría timpánica y ninguna variable influenció por la termometría temporal.

Os dados foram coletados mediante instrumento estruturado contendo as variáveis: idade; Índice de Massa Corporal; classificação da American Society of Anesthesiologists; tipo de anestesia; tempo da cirurgia; temperatura timpânica e temporal; temperatura e umidade relativa da sala cirúrgica. Foram mensuradas as temperaturas pelos métodos de aferição timpânico e temporal em 63 pacientes. Na análise dos dados buscou-se associação da hipotermia com as características dos pacientes, do tipo de anestesia, do ambiente cirúrgico segundo o método de aferição e do tempo cirúrgico. Resultados: dos 63 pacientes, 15 (23,8%) apresentaram hipotermia. Do total (n=15; 100%) de pacientes hipotérmicos, 13 (80%) tiveram hipotermia leve. A hipotermia moderada foi identificada apenas pela termometria temporal, em três (20%) pacientes. Não houve hipotermia grave e em dois (13,3%) pacientes a hipotermia ocorreu apenas na medida da termometria temporal. Na relação das variáveis, identificou-se que a hipotermia teve associação estatisticamente significante somente com a idade (p=0,0027) e o sexo (p=0,015), na aferição da temperatura timpânica.
