Freshwater ecosystems are among the most important ecosystems worldwide, however, over the last centuries, anthropogenic pressures have had catastrophic effects on them. Mercury (Hg) is one of the main environmental contaminants which globally affect ecosystems and particularly freshwater wildlife. While Hg originates from natural sources, anthropogenic activities such as agriculture, biomass combustion, and gold mining increase its concentrations. Gold mining activities are the main drivers of Hg emission in tropical ecosystems and are responsible for up to 38% of global emissions. Once in its methylated form (MeHg), mercury biomagnifies through the trophic chain and accumulates in top predators. Due to the toxicity of MeHg, long-lived predators are even more subjected to chronic effects as they accumulate Hg over time. In the present study we quantified Hg contamination in two top predators, the Black caiman Melanosuchus niger and the Agami heron Agamia agami, and in their prey in the Kaw-Roura Nature Reserve in French Guiana and evaluated the biomagnification rate in the trophic chain. Our results show that despite a TMF in the range of others in the region (4.38 in our study), top predators of the ecosystem present elevated concentrations of Hg. We have found elevated Hg concentrations in the blood of adult Black caiman (2.10 ± 0.652 µg g-1 dw) and chicks of Agami heron (1.089 ± 0.406 µg g-1 dw). These findings highlight the need to better evaluate the potential impact of Hg in freshwater top predators, especially regarding reprotoxic effects.

Some studies have shown that freshwater ecosystems are polluted in a similar proportion to marine ecosystems; however, there are many gaps to be filled in this topic. Here, we investigated whether plastics were consumed by carnivore fishes in a Neotropical floodplain and whether it was connected to seasonality (dry and wet seasons). We also evaluated the association between each type of plastic and the fish species. We analyzed the gastrointestinal contents of 23 species and assessed the occurrence and number of plastic particles. Plastics were obtained through chemical digestion and the spectrum of each sample, using a FT-IR imaging microscope. We performed a correspondence analysis (CA) with plastic data to assess the relationship between each type of plastic and the fish species. We also performed linear regression models to assess the relationships of occurrence and number of plastics ingested with seasonality. Nine species had plastics in their gastrointestinal contents, and they were identified as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyamide (PA), polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), and polypropylene (PP). The number of plastics had a positive relationship with the wet season, while the occurrence did not show a significant relationship with any season. These results are particularly important when considering the socioeconomic relevance and the ecological importance of this trophic guild.

Marine animal tracking has become one of the major tools used to understand the behavior and ecology of a multitude of species in the ocean, thus there is an increasing body of knowledge about this subject worldwide, particularly for sharks. Nevertheless, little was known of the movement patterns of shark in the Mexican Pacific (MXP) and Gulf of California (GOC), except for the pioneering work carried out in the 1980s on the movements of scalloped hammerhead sharks in El Bajo Espiritu Santo and other islands in the region, as well as ongoing studies on white shark movements, migratory patterns and behavior off Isla Guadalupe. Here we present an overview of previous studies on the movements of sharks, as well as a comprehensive description of new studies currently being carried out by our research group at Pelagios Kakunjá on several species of sharks in the MXP. We show how information gleaned from these studies can be put to use to guide sustainable exploitation policies and promote effective conservation practices.

Food web interactions are key to community structure. The introduction of species can be seen as an uncontrolled experiment of the addition of species. Introduced species lead to multiple changes, frequently threatening the native biodiversity. However, little is known about their direct effect on the upper level of the food web. In this study we review empirical data on the predator-prey relationship between the introduced lagomorphs and their consumers, and use meta-analytical tools to quantify the strength of their interactions. We expect that exotic lagomorphs will destabilize food webs, affect ecological processes and compromise the conservation of the invaded regions. We found 156 studies on the diet of 43 species of predators that consume lagomorphs as exotic preys in South America and Oceania. We found an average exotic lagomorphs-predator link of 20% which indicates a strong interaction, given that the average for the strongest links with native prey (when lagomorphs are not included in the predator diet) is about 24%. Additionally, this last link decreases to 17% when lagomorphs are present. When lagomorphs arrive in a new environment they may become the most important resource for predators, producing an unstable equilibrium in the novel food web. Any disruption of this interaction could have catastrophic consequences for the native diversity by directly impacting predators or indirectly impacting native preys by apparent competition. Eradication or any change in their abundances should be carefully considered in conservation actions since those will have great impacts on predator populations and ultimately in the whole communities.

This study reveals the food composition of pelagic fishes living in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. As such more common pelagic species are considered to be top predators, the study proposes to know what constitutes their main food. Fish are not commonly found within their stomach contents, but instead, cephalopods are their most common food. As can be observed, Teuthida cephalopods compose their principal diet. The stomach contents of specimens of Xiphias gladius, Thunnus albacares, T. obesus, T. alalunga, Isurus oxyrinchus and Alopias superciliosus caught during July 2007 to June 2009 by using tuna longliners were studied. Teuthida cephalopods constitute the main food item for the three tuna species, while X. gladius feeds mainly on Ommastrephidae cephalopods. Though the differences among the kinds of cephalopods exist, they constitute the principal resource these fish use to live at least in the southern Atlantic Ocean.


Este estudo descreve a composição da dieta de peixes pelágicos que vivem no Oceano Atlântico Sudoeste. Como tais espécies pelágicas são consideradas predadoras de topo, o estudo propõe conhecer o que constitui sua principal fonte de alimento. Peixes não são comumente encontrados em seus conteúdos estomacais, em vez disso, os cefalópodes são os alimentos mais comuns. Como pode ser observado, cefalópodes Teuthida compreendem sua dieta principal. O conteúdo estomacal de espécimes de Xiphias gladius, Thunnus albacares, T. obesus, T. alalunga, Isurus oxyrinchus e Alopias superciliosus, capturados durante julho de 2007 a junho de 2009 prela frota atuneira, foram estudados. Cefalópodes Teuthida constituem o principal item alimentar das três espécies de atum, enquanto X. gladius alimenta-se principalmente de cefalópodes Ommastrephidae. Embora as diferenças entre os tipos de cafalópodes existam, eles constituem o principal recurso que estes peixes usam para viver, pelo menos no Oceano Atlântico Sudoeste.
