RESUMO

Rotylenchulus reniformis (reniform nematode, RN) is among the most important nematodes affecting cotton. Cultural practices, such as rotation and soil amendment, are established methods for managing RN. Management may be enhanced if crop residue has biofumigant properties against RN. The objective was to evaluate the efficacy of winter crop amendments for managing RN in the greenhouse. Reniform nematode-infested soil was amended with dry or fresh organic matter (OM, 2% w/w) from winter crops - canola, carinata, hairy vetch, oat, or no crop. Cotton was subsequently grown in this soil. Independent of the crop, dry OM amendments were more effective than no amendment at managing RN, while fresh OM amendments were not. Soil and root RN abundances and reproduction factors were generally lower in Trials 1 and 3 for dry OM than fresh OM amendments or control without OM. In Trial 2, none of the OM treatments reduced RN parameters compared with no OM control. In general, when compared to plants without RN or OM, RN did not produce significant changes in growth parameters but did affect physiology (Soil Plant Analysis Development, or SPAD, values). In conclusion, dry OM amendments can help manage RN, crop growth does not always relate to RN abundances, and SPAD values could help indicate RN presence.

RESUMO

Rotylenchulus reniformis (reniform nematode, RN) is an important pathogen in cotton production. Cultural practices such as crop rotation and biofumigation-management of soil pathogens by biocidal compounds from crop residues-may help manage RN. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of winter crops for RN management through combinations of rotation and crop residue incorporation in a cotton greenhouse experiment. A total of 10 treatments were evaluated in soil inoculated with RN: three winter crops (carinata, oat, or hairy vetch) grown in rotation with no shoot organic matter (OM) incorporated (1-3), fresh shoot OM incorporated (4-6), or dry shoot OM incorporated (7-9), and a fallow control (10). Roots were re-incorporated in all treatments except fallow. Subsequently, cotton was grown. Oat and fallow were better rotation crops to lower soil RN abundances at winter crop termination than hairy vetch and carinata. After the OM incorporation treatments and cotton growth, oat was generally more effective at managing RN in cotton than carinata or hairy vetch. Within each crop, incorporation treatment generally did not affect RN management. Cotton growth was not consistently affected by the treatments.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the potential of milk production ha-1 of three consortia of black oats and legumes in detriment to black oats fertilized with N mineral. The treatments used were black oats + 200kg of N ha-1 (Av+N); black oats + white clover (Av+Tb); black oats + vetch (Av+Er) and black oats + red clover (Av+Tv). The species were implanted in 80 m2 plots under a complete randomized complete block design with four replicates. Samples were collected three times and the material evaluated was dry matter yield, chemical and bromatological composition (CP, EE, NDF, ADF, NFC, MM, estimated dry matter digestibility and NDF digestibility in 48 hours) and estimated milk production by area (kg ha-1). The results were submitted to analysis of variance and the means were compared by Tukey test at 5% probability. The chemical-bromatological composition did not differ between Av+N and Av+Er treatments in any of the evaluated attributes. The Av+Er treatment provided higher milk yield per area in relation to the others, explained by the higher DM production.(AU)

RESUMO

Heavy metal pollution, in particular with cadmium (Cd), threatens both the environment and human health. The phytoremediation of contaminated soil is one recently developed eco-friendly technique that can be applied to mitigate this issue. Repairing Cd-contaminated paddy soil during the fallow winter period can ensure future rice production while reducing heavy metal pollution. Seven winter crops were planted in this study to investigate the accumulation of this metal in mid-level Cd and low-level lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn)-contaminated paddy soils. Results show that after 4 or 5 months of growth, all crops had become moderately tolerant to toxicity; indeed, shoot Cd bioconcentration factor (BCF) values were 37.4, 17.0, 11.5, 10.5, 5.8, 3.9, and 1.4 for Sedum alfredii (SA), Witloof chicory (WC), edible-leaf beet (EB), Cardamine hupingshanensis (CH), leafy mustard (LM), oil mustard (OM), and perennial ryegrass (PR), respectively, while shoot Pb and Zn BCF values were less than 1 and 5, respectively. And SA, WC, EB, and CH all had higher shoot Cd accumulation capacities, especially SA in which the level reached 53.9 mg kg-1. The calculation results of restoration potential show that it will take at least 5 years for WC, 7 years for SA and EB, and 10 years for CH to reach the repair target. These results show that it is possible to grow winter crops to repair soil Cd pollution, with WC, EB, CH, and SA, the best candidates for making full use of fallow periods while simultaneously achieving soil phytoremediation. The results of this study will prove useful for establishing a new summer production model by ensuring the winter repair of contaminated paddy soil.

This study aimed to determine the relationship between the population density of pest and other species of white grubs (Coleoptera: Melolonthidae) occurring in cultivated and uncultivated fields in the planalto region, in northern Rio Grande do Sul. Sampling was carried through 23 municipalities, from July to September 2009 and 2010 in two areas, one cultivated and another noncultivated, In each area, trenches of 50x25x30cm were opened. Melolontid larvae collected were identified and gathered in two groups: "pest-species" and "other species". Populational density (no of larvae m-2) of the two groups were compared between cultivated and noncultivated areas. The "other species" density was higher than pest community in both cultivated (9,0 e 3,9 larvae m-2) and noncultivated areas (6,6 e 3,9 larvae m-2 respectively). There is no difference between means of pest species population density between cultivated and noncultivated areas.

The quantitative analysis with different types of indicators is crucial in determining the sustainability of crop succession. This study aimed to appraise that in tilled plain areas. The research was carried out in Pelotas, RS, Brazil at Embrapa Clima Temperado research area. The treatments consisted of successions of winter and spring-summer crops species for five years, followed by two years of fallow and three years of rice cropping. The spring-summer crops were corn and soybean, besides rice; the winter crops were cereals, leguminous pastures, mixtures species, turnip and native grass species. Seeding was performed either by no-till (NT) or conventional (CT). The experiment was planned in a split-plot randomized blocks design with three replications, where the summer crops occupied the plots, while the winter's species were allocated to the subplots. The parameters measured were transformed into index to standardize the variables, each one in relation to the better measurement behavior, and arranged in four categories of analysis: (a) Agronomics indices (dry weight and grain yield); (b) Environmental indicators (soil fertility); (c) Energy Indicators (gain and energy efficiency); d) Economic Indicators (profitability and gross value of production). Through harmonic average rates calculated for each indicator, comparisons to the crop succession were then performed, and its sustainability inferred. Analyses of contrasts between the crop successions were accomplished too. The results provided the following conclusions: (a) All crop succession which had maize participation had a higher index sustainability; (b) the crops successions S1 [Cereals x soybean x rice(NT)] and S4 [Turnip x soybean x rice(NT)] had, respectively, the highest and the lowest sustainability among the ones with the soybean crop participation; (c) S5 [Native grass x soybean x rice(CT)] showed the lowest sustainability level, (d) S8 [Species mixtures x corn x rice(NT)] ...
