RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To describe the use of a synthetic hemostatic dressing, QuikClot Combat Gauze (QCG), in dogs with bleeding wounds. CASE SERIES SUMMARY: Two dogs presented with bleeding traumatic wounds, and QCG was used to achieve hemostasis during stabilization of these dogs. In the other 2 dogs, QCG was used to help attenuate bleeding associated with a surgical procedure. NEW OR UNIQUE INFORMATION PROVIDED: While hemostatic dressings have been widely studied and used in human medicine, there is minimal information on the use and efficacy of these hemostatic dressings in veterinary medicine. This case series describes the use of QCG in dogs with hemorrhaging wounds. QCG could be a valuable resource in veterinary emergency and critical care settings.

RESUMO

Increased mortalities associated with uncontrolled and excessive bleeding is still of paramount concern in the clinics, caregivers and military medics. Herein, we designed a shape memory cryogel based on chitosan (C) and functionalized-dextran (D), incorporated with Kaolin (K) and calcium (Ca2+) as haemostatic agents. The developed cryogel (CDKCa) exhibits a uniform interconnected porous architecture with profound fluid absorption ability, rapid blood clotting, stable clot formation and good antibacterial activity. The CDKCa elucidates significantly less clotting time (~30 s; in-vitro) and increased aggregation and activation of platelets/red blood cells in comparison to the control groups and commercial dressings (Axiostat and QuikClot). The developed CDKCa also significantly reduced the aPTT and PT values by ~58 % and 31 % respectively, leading to the activation of intrinsic and extrinsic coagulation cascades. The CDKCa cryogel displays enhanced mechanical stability, flexibility and a good shape memory, a property quintessential to cease uncontrolled bleeding in irregular and non-compressible wounds. Further, the Kaolin and Ca2+ incorporated shape memory CDKCa cryogel demonstrates a rapid blood coagulation and stable clot formation in different compressible and non-compressible rat liver and femur hemorrhagic models. In summary, the endorsed results of CDKCa suggest that the design, fabrication and excellent clotting ability may attribute to high haemostatic efficiency of CDKCa dressing and have a great potential to prevent uncontrollable hemorrhages.

Pica refers to eating nonfood substances. The pica behavior has been the focus of attention in physiological and pharmacological studies, because its consumption is a good marker of nausea in laboratory rats, which cannot vomit due to neuroanatomical reasons. Almost all pica studies with rats have used kaolin clay pellets as nonfood substances. The present study primarily aimed to explore an alternative (or more suitable) substance to kaolin for detection of nausea induced by emetic drugs. Two calcium compounds, gypsum and lime, were evaluated in this study. An injection of lithium chloride (LiCl) increased pica behavior not only in the rats given kaolin but also in the rats given gypsum, suggesting that gypsum consumption could be used as an indicator of nausea. However, its sensitivity was no greater than that of kaolin consumption. In addition, lime is not a useful marker for nausea because the size of pica was small in the LiCl-injected rats, and did not differ from the control in the cisplatin-injected rats. In short, the superiority of kaolin as a test substance for nausea could not be overturned. However, the fact that nauseous rats displayed pica behavior with gypsum and lime refutes the claim that aluminosilicate, the main component of kaolin, is the critical determinant of emetic-caused pica in laboratory rats.

Studies show that traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), such as Liujunanwei (LJAW) decoction, can play important roles in alleviating side effects of chemotherapy. The purpose of this study was to understand how LJAW can counter chemotherapy-induced emesis via alteration of gut microbiota. We evaluated the effect of LJAW on cisplatin (DDP)-induced nausea and vomiting using a rat-pica model. Rats react to emetic-producing stimuli with increased kaolin consumption, a phenomenon called pica. The rats were injected with cisplatin and then randomly assigned to the control (DDP), Ondansetron or LJAW. The intake of kaolin and chow diet as well as body weights were recorded every 24 hours. Fecal samples were collected prior to, after three and seven days of treatment. The expression of proteins was measured by western blot. The concentration of cytokines and serotonin was evaluated using ELISA assay kits. Kaolin consumption in rats induced by cisplatin was reduced by 16.5%, 22.5%, and 30.1% in the LJAW group compared to the DDP group at 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours, respectively (p>0.05). LJAW significantly increased the food intake of the rats (13.94 ± 4.73 g) during the first 24 hours as opposed to the DDP (9.23 ± 3.77 g) (p<0.05). 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed the abundance of Bacteroidetes increased in cisplatin treated rats. In addition, cisplatin injection caused an enrichment of Escherichia-Shigella and Enterococcus at the genus level. While, enrichment of Blautia and Lactobacillus was presented in LJAW treated rats. Serotonin decreased in LJAW treated intestine and medulla oblongata tissues. Further, the protein expression of tryptophan hydroxylase 1 (TPH1) a rate limiting enzyme of serotonin was inhibited in LJAW treated rat's jejunum compared with cisplatin only treated rats. In addition, LJAW downregulated chemotherapy induced elevated inflammation. The results of this study indicated that LJAW is capable of decreasing cisplatin-induced kaolin intake in rat-nausea model (pica), which might be mediated through gut microbiome-induced anti-inflammation and anti-serotonin synthesis functions.

INTRODUCTION: Adhesions are often considered to be an inevitable consequence of abdominal and pelvic surgery, jeopardizing the medium and long-term success of these procedures. Numerous strategies have been tested to reduce adhesion formation, however, to date, no surgical or medical therapeutic approaches have been successful in its prevention. This study demonstrates the safety and efficacy of Chitogel with Deferiprone and/or antibacterial Gallium Protoporphyrin in different concentrations in preventing adhesion formation after abdominal surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 112 adult (8-10 week old) male Wistar albino rats were subjected to midline laparotomy and caecal abrasion, with 48 rats having an additional enterotomy and suturing. Kaolin (0.005g/ml) was applied to further accelerate adhesion formation. The abrasion model rats were randomized to receive saline, Chitogel, or Chitogel plus Deferiprone (5, 10 or 20 mM), together with Gallium Protoporphyrin (250µg/mL). The abrasion with enterotomy rats were randomised to receive saline, Chitogel or Chitogel with Deferiprone (1 or 5 mM). At day 21, rats were euthanised, and adhesions graded macroscopically and microscopically; the tensile strength of the repaired caecum was determined by an investigator blinded to the treatment groups. RESULTS: Chitogel with Deferiprone 5 mM significantly reduced adhesion formation (p<0.01) when pathologically assessed in a rat abrasion model. Chitogel with Deferiprone 5 mM and 1 mM also significantly reduced adhesions (p<0.05) after abrasion with enterotomy. Def-Chitogel 1mM treatment did not weaken the enterotomy site with treated sites having significantly better tensile strength compared to control saline treated enterotomy rats. CONCLUSIONS: Chitogel with Deferiprone 1 mM constitutes an effective preventative anti-adhesion barrier after abdominal surgery in a rat model. Moreover, this therapeutic combination of agents is safe and does not weaken the healing of the sutured enterotomy site.

: Thrombin generation test (TGT) is well established tool to research blood coagulation in plasma of hemophilia patients. Traditionally coagulation in this test is triggered by a tissue factor (TF), an extrinsic coagulation pathway activator. However, it is known that disorders of the intrinsic pathway are most important for coagulation in hemophilia. In this study, we hypothesized that triggering coagulation via the intrinsic pathway could increase a sensitivity of the TGT to monitor hemophilia treatment. The aim of this study was to compare thrombin generation in hemophilia A patients with inhibitors to factor VIII before and after infusion of bypassing agent [recombinant-activated factor VIIa (rVIIa)] using standard activation of coagulation by TF or by kaolin, an activator of coagulation by intrinsic pathway. Endogenous thrombin potential (ETP) in nine patients was measured. ETP before (ETP0) and 60 min after rVIIa infusion (ETP60) were compared. It was shown that ETP0 and ETP60 were significantly different when using any coagulation activator (paired Student's t test, P = 0.017 and 3.7 × 10 for clotting activation by TF and kaolin, respectively). The ratios of ETP60/ETP0 were 1.2 ±â€Š0.2 or 30.0 ±â€Š22.4 (mean ±â€ŠSD, n = 9) for coagulation activated by TF or kaolin, respectively, and were significantly different (paired Student's t test, P < 0.005). The TGT clearly distinguished between ETP0 and ETP60 in the case of any coagulation activator, but ETP increasing after rVIIa infusion was significantly higher when activated with kaolin. This provided increased sensitivity of this method for monitoring hemophilia therapy.

Hemostatic devices used in the transradial approach (TRA) and transulnar approach (TUA) are limited. This study compared the efficacy and safety of hemostasis using the QuikClot Radial hemostatic pad (QC) vs. standard mechanical compression (SC) after coronary angiography (CAG). This prospective single-center randomized trial included CAG patients. The primary and secondary endpoints were efficacy (successful hemostasis) and safety (total artery occlusion [TAO], pseudoaneurysm, hematoma), respectively. A visual analog scale (VAS) evaluated patient pain during compression. In 2013-2017, 200 patients were randomized 2 × 2 into the: (1) TRA and TUA groups and (2) QC and SC groups. Successful hemostasis was achieved in 92 (92%) patients in the QC group and 100 (100%) patients in the SC group (p < 0.006). The TRA SC subgroup showed significantly better results than the TRA QC subgroup (100% vs. 90.0%; p < 0.03). Similar results were obtained in the TUA QC and TUA SC subgroups (95% vs. 100%; p = 0.5). The secondary endpoint was achieved in the QC and SC groups (8% vs. 9%; p = 0.8). Patients reported significantly less pain during QC application than during SC (VAS: 2.6 ± 2.6 vs. 3.4 ± 2.9; p < 0.03). In patients undergoing CAG with TRA or TUA, QC was associated with lower efficacy, less discomfort, and similar safety compared to SC.

BACKGROUND: The effective hemostasis after minor debridement in an outpatient clinic is important and essential. This study is aimed at evaluating the hemostatic efficacy and safety of the kaolin-impregnated dressing for diabetic foot ulcer patient who take an anticoagulant. METHODS: A prospective, randomized, clinical trial study was performed in twenty-six patients with diabetic foot ulcers who take an anticoagulant requiring minor debridement in an outpatient clinic. Minor debridement and removal of break down skin were performed by one orthopedic surgeon. Hemostasis on wound bed was achieved using kaolin-impregnated gauze (study group) and standard sterilized dry gauze (control group). Two randomized groups were compared for hemostatic efficacy and side effect. RESULTS: For the purpose of this study, the presence or absence of hemostasis was assessed at 5 and 10 minutes after the application of dressing material. Treatment was evaluated as successful if bleeding was ceased adequately, and no extra hemostatic measures were required within 10 minutes. At 5 minutes, 80% of patients using the kaolin-impregnated gauze successfully achieved complete hemostasis versus 40% in the control group that controlled bleeding partially. With kaolin-impregnated gauze, 100% of patients show complete hemostasis at 10 minutes versus 58.3% in the standard gauze (P < .001). An adverse effect was not noted in all patients. CONCLUSIONS: The use of kaolin-impregnated gauze appears to be a safe and feasible option in managing bleeding after debridement of diabetic foot ulcers, and merits to patient who had a bleeding tendency is high. This trial is registered with CRIS registration number KCT0003894.

Kaolin clay eating has been considered as a marker of nausea in rats, because a variety of treatments, which evoke nausea in humans, generate consumption of kaolin clay in rats. The present study with two experiments replicated kaolin clay ingestion induced by an injection of emetic lithium chloride (LiCl). The LiCl injection, however, did not generate eating of wooden objects in rats. The present study also provides a new finding that consumption of kaolin clay alleviates rats' taste aversion learning caused by an LiCl injection. This finding is congruent with the contention that consumption of kaolin clay is not only a useful index of, but also an effective remedy for, drug-induced nausea in rats.

BACKGROUND: Hemostasis following transradial access (TRA) is usually achieved by mechanical compression. We investigated use of the QuikClot Radial hemostasis pad (Z-Medica) compared with the TR Band (Terumo Medical) to shorten hemostasis after TRA. METHODS: Thirty patients undergoing TRA coronary angiography and/or percutaneous coronary intervention were randomized into three cohorts post TRA: 10 patients received mechanical compression with the TR Band, 10 patients received 30 min of compression with the QuikClot Radial pad, and 10 patients received 60 min of compression with the QuikClot Radial pad. Times to hemostasis and access-site complications were recorded. Radial artery patency was evaluated 1 hour after hemostasis by the reverse Barbeau's test. RESULTS: There were no differences in patient characteristics, mean dose of heparin (7117 ± 1054 IU), or mean activated clotting time value (210 ± 50 sec) at the end of procedure among the three groups. Successful hemostasis was achieved in 100% of patients with both the 30-min and 60-min compression groups using the QuikClot pad. Hemostasis failure occurred in 50% of patients when the TR Band was initially weaned at the protocol-driven time (40 min after sheath removal). Mean compression time for hemostasis with the TR Band was 149.4 min compared with 30.7 min and 60.9 min for the 30-min and 60-min QuikClot groups, respectively. No radial artery occlusion occurred in any subject at the end of the study. CONCLUSIONS: Use of the QuikClot Radial pad following TRA in this pilot trial significantly shortened hemostasis times when compared with the TR Band, with no increased complications noted.

Introduction The use of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) such as rivaroxaban (Xarelto) is increasingly common. However, therapies for reversing anticoagulation in the event of hemorrhage are limited. This study investigates the ability of hemostatic agents to improve the coagulation of rivaroxaban-anticoagulated blood, as measured by rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM). Hypothesis/Problem If a chitosan-based hemostatic agent (Celox), which works independently of the clotting cascade, is applied to rivaroxaban-anticoagulated blood, it should improve coagulation by decreasing clotting time (CT), decreasing clot formation time (CFT), and increasing maximum clot firmness (MCF). If a kaolin-based hemostatic agent (QuikClot Combat Gauze), which works primarily by augmenting the clotting cascade upstream of factor Xa (FXa), is applied to rivaroxaban-anticoagulated blood, it will not be effective at improving coagulation. METHODS: Patients (age >18 years; non-pregnant) on rivaroxaban, presenting to the emergency department (ED) at two large, university-based medical centers, were recruited. Subjects (n=8) had blood drawn and analyzed using ROTEM with and without the presence of a kaolin-based and a chitosan-based hemostatic agent. The percentage of patients whose ROTEM parameters responded to the hemostatic agent and percent changes in coagulation parameters were calculated. RESULTS: Data points analyzed included: CT, CFT, and MCF. Of the samples treated with a kaolin-based hemostatic agent, seven (87.5%) showed reductions in CT, eight (100.0%) showed reductions in CFT, and six (75.0%) showed increases in MCF. The average percent change in CT, CFT, and MCF for all patients was 32.5% (Standard Deviation [SD]: 286; Range:-75.3 to 740.7%); -66.0% (SD:14.4; Range: -91.4 to -44.1%); and 4.70% (SD: 6.10; Range: -4.8 to 15.1%), respectively. The corresponding median percent changes were -68.1%, -64.0%, and 5.2%. Of samples treated with a chitosan-based agent, six (75.0%) showed reductions in CT, three (37.5%) showed reductions in CFT, and five (62.5%) showed increases in MCF. The average percent changes for CT, CFT, and MCF for all patients were 165.0% (SD: 629; Range:-96.9 to 1718.5%); 139.0% (SD: 174; Range: -83.3 to 348.0%); and -8.38% (SD: 32.7; Range:-88.7 to 10.4%), respectively. The corresponding median percent changes were -53.7%, 141.8%, and 3.0%. CONCLUSIONS: Rotational thromboelastometry detects changes in coagulation parameters caused by hemostatics applied to rivaroxaban-anticoagulated blood. These changes trended in the direction towards improved coagulability, suggesting that kaolin-based and chitosan-based hemostatics may be effective at improving coagulation in these patients. Objectives: Both kaolin- and Celite-activated clotting times (ACT) are used to guide anticoagulation during cardiopulmonary bypass. It is unknown whether these methods lead to similar management procedures for anticoagulation in patients and are thus interchangeable in terms of bias, precision and variability. Methods: We randomized 97 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting or aortic valve replacement to either kaolin- or Celite-guided anticoagulation. The ACT was measured simultaneously with the other method. We administered 300 IU/kg heparin to obtain initial ACT values greater than 400 s and additional heparin in each group using the minimum value of duplicate measurements according to a predefined protocol. The primary end point was the total heparin dose and the number of heparin supplements. Results: The total heparin dose per patient in the 48 Celite-guided patients was 35 271 ± 12 406 IU with 51 supplements and in the 49 kaolin-guided patients, 35 997 ± 11 540 IU ( P = 0.77) with 56 supplements ( P = 0.53). Postoperative thrombin generation time, fibrinolytic response time, chest tube loss and transfusion requirements were not different between the two groups. However, the methods differed in individual patients with regard to supplemental heparin ( P = 0.002). Bias between methods at baseline was +10.3%, Celite being higher, and changed to a value of -12.9% at 2 h bypass. The coefficient of variation at baseline for individual patients was 2.6 times larger with kaolin than with Celite ( P < 0.001). Correlation between ACT values at baseline was only 45%. Conclusions: Kaolin- and Celite-guided management of anticoagulation is clinically not different, but the methods are not interchangeable. RESUMO

The process of recording an acceptable fixed prosthodontic impression must include appropriate tissue management. This article reviews the effects of mechanical and chemical tissue retraction for fixed prosthodontics, specifically discussing the use of retraction cord with or without chemicals to control sulcular hemorrhage and moisture. Common astringents, hemostatics, and vasoconstrictors used in dentistry as gingival retraction agents are discussed, and recommendations for modification of patient and treatment management are provided.

AIM: The purpose of the present in vivo study was to measure the efficacy of different gingival displacement materials in achieving gingival tissue displacement and to compare the efficacy of Expasyl displacement paste (Pierre Rolland, France) and gingival displacement cord for gingival displacement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen subjects were included in the study. Premolars were prepared to receive full veneer crown, gingival displacement was carried using gingival retraction cord and gingival displacement paste. Impression of the gingival sulcus was made. Sulcus width after displacement was measured under magnification. RESULTS: The mean displacement value of sulcus width was 0.21 ± 0.01 mm for the gingival retraction cord and 0.26 ± 0.02 mm for the gingival displacement paste. 'F' test was used for statistical analysis. Difference among the two test agents was statistically significant (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Gingival displacement paste showed better response in achieving horizontal displacement of the gingival sulcus than gingival retraction cord. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Gingival displacement helps in recording the unprepared tooth surface adjacent to the finish line in the impression being made, thereby helping a better marginal adaptation and emergence profile in the extracoronal restoration.

BACKGROUND: Severe hepatic injuries may be highly lethal, and perihepatic packing remains the mainstay of treatment. This is not always successful, particularly in the setting of hypothermia and coagulopathy. Kaolin-impregnated Combat Gauze (CG) is an effective hemostatic dressing used primarily to treat external wounds. The objective of this study was to determine the ability of CG to control severe hemorrhage in hypothermic, coagulopathic swine with a high-grade hepatic injury. METHODS: Anesthetized animals underwent splenectomy and were cooled to 32°C while undergoing a 60% exchange transfusion with Hextend. A grade V liver injury was created in the left middle hepatic lobe. Animals were allowed to freely bleed for 30 s and then randomized to treatment with CG or plain gauze laparotomy pads (PG) applied to the injury site. Animals were then resuscitated with warmed Hextend. RESULTS: There was no difference between groups in preinjury hemodynamic or laboratory values. Animals packed with CG had less blood loss when compared with standard packing (CG = 25 mL/kg versus PG = 58 mL/kg, P = 0.05). There was a trend towards lower hetastarch resuscitation requirements in the CG group (CG = 7 mL/kg versus PG = 44 mL/kg, P = 0.06) but no statistically significant difference in mortality (CG = 13% versus PG = 50%, P = 0.11). Histology of the injury sites revealed more adherent clot in the CG group, but no inflammation, tissue necrosis, or residual material. CONCLUSION: In pigs with severe hepatic injury, Combat Gauze reduced blood loss and resuscitation requirements when compared with plain laparotomy pads. Combat Gauze may be safe and effective for use on severe liver injuries.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to compare standard gauze (SG) and advanced hemostatic dressings in use by military personnel in a no-hold model. METHODS: A randomized, controlled trial was conducted using 36 swine. Animals underwent femoral arteriotomy, followed by 60 seconds of uncontrolled hemorrhage. After hemorrhage, packing with 1 of 3 dressings-SG, Combat Gauze (CG), or Celox Rapid gauze (XG)-and a 500-mL bolus of Hextend were initiated. Pressure was not held after packing, and animals were followed for 120 minutes. Physiologic parameters were monitored continuously, and electrolyte and hematologic laboratory assessments were performed before injury and 30 and 120 minutes after injury. Dressing failure was determined if bleeding occurred outside the wound. RESULTS: All animals survived to study end. Baseline characteristics were similar between groups. No statistical difference was seen in initial blood loss or dressing success rate (SG, 10 of 12; CG, 10 of 12; and XG, 12 of 12). Secondary blood loss was significantly less with XG (median, 12.8 mL; interquartile range, 8.8 to 39.7 mL) compared with SG (median, 44.7 mL; interquartile range, 17.8 to 85.3 mL; P = .02) and CG (median, 31.9 mL; interquartile range, 18.6 to 69.1 mL; P = .05). Packing time was significantly shorter with XG (mean, 37.1 ± 6.2 seconds) compared with SG (mean, 45.2 ± 6.0 seconds; P < .01) and CG (mean, 43.5 ± 5.6 seconds; P = .01). CONCLUSIONS: XG demonstrated shorter application time and decreased secondary blood loss in comparison with both SG and CG. These differences may be of potential benefit in a care-under-fire scenario.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of kaolin- and chitosan-based hemostatic agents for hemorrhage control in a 14-day survival, damage-control swine model of Grade IV liver injury. METHODS: A total of 48 anesthetized pigs (40 kg) underwent a 35% total blood volume bleed, cooling to 34°C and a standardized liver injury. The animals were randomized to standard gauze control (SG, n = 12), QuikClot Combat Gauze (QCCG, n = 12), Celox (CX, n = 12), or Celox Gauze (CXG, n = 12) packing. At 15 minutes, shed blood was calculated, followed by damage-control closure. At 48 hours, pack removal and definitive closure was performed. At 14-day sacrifice, the liver, kidney, heart, lung, and small bowel standard intra-abdominal organs were sampled for histopathological examination. RESULTS: Uncontrolled blood loss at 2 minutes demonstrated internal consistency of the injury. Blood loss at 15 minutes was significantly lower in the CX and QCCG arms (SG, 11.1 ± 1.1 mL/kg; QCCG, 5.3 ± 1.2 mL/kg; CX, 5.7 ± 1.2 mL/kg; and CXG, 10.1 ± 1.3 mL/kg; p = 0.002). Forty-eight-hour survival was 50.0% for SG, 58.3% for QCCG, 83.3% for CX, and 41.7% for CXG (p = 0.161). Fourteen-day survival was 41.7% (5) for SG, 50.0% (6) for QCCG, 58.3% (7) for CX, and 41.7% (5) for CXG (p = 0.821). Four CX and two QCCG deaths were caused by bowel obstruction; one SG death was caused by sepsis; the remainder was caused by blood loss.Histopathology in one CX animal demonstrated eosinophilic material within a coronary vessel consistent with granule embolization. CONCLUSION: Celox and QuikClot Combat Gauze were effective hemostatic adjuncts to standard intracavitary damage-control packing. The hemostasis was durable, facilitating pack removal, and definitive closure at reoperation. There was however an increase in the development of intra-abdominal adhesions resulting in small bowel obstruction. The potential for distant embolization of granular agents warrants further investigation.

Hen housing (cage or cage-free) did not impact overall abundances of northern fowl mites, Ornithonyssus sylviarum (Canestrini & Fanzago) (Acari: Macronyssidae), or chicken body lice, Menacanthus stramineus (Nitzsch) (Phthiraptera: Menoponidae). Cage-free hens received a dustbox with sand plus diatomaceous earth (DE), kaolin clay or sulphur. Weekly use varied from none to 100% of hens; 73% of hens used the dustbox at least once. Ectoparasite populations on dustbathing hens (users) were compared with those on non-user cage-free and caged hens. All materials reduced ectoparasites on user hens by 80-100% after 1 week of dustbox use. Diatomaceous earth and kaolin failed to reduce ectoparasites on non-user hens, and ectoparasites on user hens recovered after dustbox removal. A sulphur dustbox eliminated mites from all hens (including non-users) within 2-4 weeks. Residual sulphur controlled mites until the end of the experiment (up to 9 weeks), even after the dustbox was removed. Louse populations on hens using the sulphur dustbox were reduced in 1-2 weeks. Residual sulphur effects were less evident in lice, but the use of a sulphur dustbox by a higher proportion of hens extended louse control to all hens. This is the first experimental study to show that bird dustbathing in naturally and widely available dust materials (particularly kaolin) can suppress ectoparasites and thus the behaviour is probably adaptive.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate, using conventional in vitro procedures, the abrasivity, enamel polishing properties, and stain removal effectiveness of various commercial dentifrices that have a variety of compositions and are marketed for cleaning, whitening, and/or polishing capabilities, and to examine their relationships between stain removal and abrasivity. METHODS: The Relative Dentin Abrasivity (RDA) method was used to measure abrasivity, and the Pellicle Cleaning Ratio (PCR) procedure was used to evaluate stain removal performance. A Cleaning Efficiency Index (CEI) was calculated using the RDA and PCR values. Enamel polish was determined on bovine enamel specimens using a reflectometer. All treatments were performed on a V-8 cross-brushing machine using aqueous dentifrice slurries and standard nylon-bristle toothbrushes. A total of 26 dentifrices, purchased at retail, were tested against the American Dental Association (ADA) calcium pyrophosphate reference standard. RESULTS: All dentifrices removed extrinsic stain and produced some dentin abrasion, but scores ranged widely between products (from 36 to 269 for RDA and from 25 to 138 for PCR). The majority of dentifrices contained hydrated silicas, and those with high PCR scores often, but not always, had higher RDA values. Products containing other abrasives (e.g., dicalcium phosphate, sodium bicarbonate, and calcium carbonate) generally had lower RDA values and usually lower PCR scores. There were exceptions (e.g., refined kaolin clay) that had high PCR scores and low RDA values, resulting in higher CEI values. Similarly, brushing with all dentifrices significantly increased reflectance readings of acid-dulled teeth, but polish scores also were highly variable among products (ranging from 38 to 97). The polish scores of dentifrices containing hydrated silica varied extensively (ranging from 38 to 80), and the scores of products containing other abrasives fell within this same range, except for dentifrices containing either Fuller's earth (86) or kaolin (97). CONCLUSION: With only a few exceptions, dentifrices marketed as "whitening" products were generally more abrasive to dentin, especially for those containing silicas. Similarly, aside from two non-silica products, those dentifrices advertised for polishing ability generally were no more effective than other products. The relationship between stain-removal ability and abrasivity of dentifrices was not necessarily direct.
