RESUMO

This paper presents the priority original methods (patent No. 2101046, Russia) for the treatment of inflammatory pyodestructive processes in the oral cavity, maxillofacial area, and neck (odontogenic abscesses and phlegmons including those complicated by mediastinitis and sepsis), sinusitis, carbuncles and furuncles of face and neck skin, parotitis, sialadenitis, adenophlegmons, lymphadenitis, periotitis, alveolitis, arthritis, arthrosis of the temporomandibular joint, odontogenic and traumatic osteomyelitis, infected purulent traumas (including gunshot ones), fractures of the jaws, etc. making use of Optodan laser (patent No. 2014107, Russia) for laser and magnetic-laser therapy.

RESUMO

The efficacy of including a magnetic field, low-intensity laser beam, and their combination in the complex of therapeutic measures was studied in 119 patients with suppurative wounds and diabetes mellitus. With the use of magnetic field or laser beam intoxication diminished, the organism's immunological status was stabilized within a shorter time, the wound process followed a quicker course, and treatment took less time. The magnetic-laser effect has advantages over separate use of these factors.

RESUMO

The use of radiation of the helium-neon laser makes time of the treatment of patients with purulent processes 4-6 days shorter, prevents the formation of rough scars and deformities at the place of the former purulent wound. The laser irradiation is especially effective when combined with proteolytic enzymes.

RESUMO

Limited indications for radiation treatment of benign dermatoses are presented in order to emphasize modern restrictions and techniques in the use of dermatologic radiation therapy and to promote measures of protection against stray radiation. The use of softer, less penetrating X rays, least effective doses and meticulous shielding are recommended. So done, radiation therapy offers an effective therapeutic alternative for conditions that do not respond to other forms of treatment.

RESUMO

Thirty-five episodes of localized infection among 20 patients with acute leukemia and granulocytopenia (less than 1000 cells/microliter) were treated with intensive supportive care including systemic antibiotics. In a double blind randomization, 17 of the episodes also received 400 rads of megavoltage irradiation to the site of the lesion given as a single dose and repeated 7 days later. No significant differences were observed in response rates between the irradiated and nonirradiated lesions. Overall, 65% of the irradiated infections and 44% of the nonirradiated lesions responded completely, a difference which is not significant. The median number of days required to achieve maximum clinical response was similar whether or not irradiation was given (10 versus 12 days). Management of such localized infections should include early diagnosis with prompt institution of intensive supportive care including appropriate systemic antibiotics, but low-dose irradiation cannot be recommended as part of the routine management of these lesions.
