RESUMO

The present research focuses on the study of intestinal stoma demarcation. It reviews the historical development of the knowledge produced in this field, considering the advancement implemented in the area of abdominal surgeries which proposes the externalization of intestinal segments. In order to make the demarcation of intestinal stoma, it is necessary to limit the ideal region and to perform it with special pen which will propitiate the making of an anatomically appropriate opening. The stoma should favor the adaptation of devices which do the collection of effluents from the patient's intestines with a minimum of discomfort to the patient. The choice for the localization of the stoma, which is based on scientific principles, is made taking into consideration the structure of the recto-abdominal muscle and the distance from critical areas. At last, the most performed techniques of demarcation of the intestinal stoma are presented, as well as the procedures to be followed by the nurse or by the stoma therapist nurse.

RESUMO

Building on past accomplishments in the field of enterostomal therapy has resulted in the high quality of care available today for patients with stomas. Rupert B. Turnbull, Jr., MD, FACS, is the acknowledged "Father of Enterostomal Therapy" because of his pioneer surgical contributions and because of his call to Norma Gill, ET, to lead the technical development under his guidance. This 1993 Turnbull Memorial Lecture deals with historical interactions and developments, as seen by Dr. Turnbull's partner since the early years of the specialty's development.

RESUMO

This article, describes the evolution of stoma formation from earliest times to current innovative procedures. Surgeons are continually trying to develop new procedures so that they can offer less socially incapacitating alternatives to the abdominal stoma.

RESUMO

The evolution of the procedures for the formation of a surgical abdominal stoma are outlined; this was first, intestinal exteriorization for trauma, then stoma formation alone and finally stoma formation associated with bowel resection. Accounts and recommendations occurred in the 16th and 17th centuries as by Pillore and Duret, but were few in number. Development of the stoma on a sound basis did not occur until the late 19th century. Dupuytren, Bryant, Maydl, Mikulicz von Radecki and Miles were prominent in this development.
