RESUMO

Donovanosis is an acquired sexually transmitted disease predominantly affecting the external genitalia. The cervix is an uncommon site of involvement, and can clinically mimic carcinoma of the cervix. The imaging (MR) appearance of donovanosis has not been described previously in the literature. We report a case wherein the MR appearance of cervical donovanosis is indistinguishable from carcinoma of the cervix.

Granuloma inguinale is an indolent, progressive, ulcerative and granulomatous skin disease caused by Calymmatobacterium granulomatosis. It is generally treated with antibiotics. However, long-standing and complicated disease requires surgical treatment. Two patients with extensive and multiple perianal fistulas and abscesses unresponsive to medical treatment were managed with radical surgical resection. The first patient healed by primary intention, but a diverting colostomy was made for the second patient and the tissue defect was closed with a rotation flap. Follow-up at 4 years revealed the disappearance of the symptoms and the absence of recurrence in both patients.

RESUMO

Lymphogranuloma venereum, chancroid, and granuloma inguinale are three uncommon bacterial infections in the United States; however, with the increase in immigrants from Asian and South American countries, the incidence of these infections is rising. This article reviews the clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and therapy of these infections.

RESUMO

A ten-year review (1973-1983) revealed 13 cases of documented granuloma inguinale at Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta. The patients' ages ranged from 17 to 77, with the majority in their early 20s. The initial presentation of granuloma inguinale included large, fungating labial ulcers, labial swelling, vaginal discharge, rectovaginal fistulae and hematuria. Common presumptive diagnoses included carcinoma, herpes, syphilis and granuloma inguinale. The final diagnosis was made with cytology and/or tissue examination with the help of special stains to demonstrate the causative organism, Calymmatobacterium granulomatis. Granuloma inguinale is rare and difficult to diagnose, but with physician awareness, cytology and biopsy, it should not be missed.
