RESUMO

In this work, we report some preliminary results regarding the analysis of electron spin resonance (ESR) response of soda-lime samples used for retrospective dosimetry. Six different soda-lime glass batches were evaluated after irradiation. We compared several dose reconstruction techniques: saturation method, subtraction method and g-effective, geff, approach. The differences were observed and discussed. ESR signal responses of soda-lime glass samples to different radiation doses for the triage application were investigated. Results confirmed that geff approach has potential for the identification and dosimetry of irradiated soda-lime glass samples using either additive dose method or only calibration curve.

RESUMO

This work experimentally determined the effect of microwave irradiation with NaOH pretreatment on anaerobic digestion of thickened waste activated sludge in semi-continuous mesophilic digesters at hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 15, 10, 7, and 5 days. The degree of substrate solubilization was 18 times higher in pretreated sludge (53.2%) than in raw sludge (3.0%). Removal efficiency of volatile solid in digesters fed with raw (control) and pretreated sludges (PD) decreased as HRT reduced. The highest relative improvement of properties compared with the control occurred at 5 day HRT. Improvements in biogas production compared with the control increased in the PD as HRT was reduced to 5 days (205% higher at 5 days). However, digested sludges in the control and PD increased capillary suction time compared with raw sludge. The results show that microwave irradiation combined with alkali pretreatment is effective in increasing mesophilic anaerobic biodegradability of sewage sludge.

RESUMO

In this study, synergetic effect of mild acid and alkali with electron beam irradiation (EBI) on the enzymatic hydrolysis of a selected grass biomass was assessed. Biomass samples prepared by soaking with 1% H2SO4, or 1% NaOH, were exposed to 75 and 150 kGy of EBI. Water presoaked biomass was used as control. Hydrolysis of pretreated samples was carried out using cellulase (15 FPU/g biomass) for 120 h. Structural changes were studied by FTIR and XRD analyses. Reducing sugar and glucose yields from enzymatic hydrolysis were significantly higher in acid and alkali presoaked EBI exposed samples. Theoretical glucose yield showed 40% increase from control in alkali presoaked EBI exposed (150 kGy) samples. Removal of hemicellulose, decreased crystallinity and structural changes were major factors for the combined treatment effect favoring the hydrolysis.

RESUMO

One-, two- or three-dimensional arrays of closely spaced silver nanoparticles may lead to new optical properties, due to short or long range coupling between their resonant surface plasmons, so that the spatially controlled growth of silver nanoparticles provides an efficient way to tune their optical properties. Towards this way, we present here the periodic pattern of a glass surface with silver nanoparticles by continuous ultraviolet laser exposure. The formation of the 160 nm period pattern is well described by an interference-based model which agrees with the experimental conclusions, mainly obtained by various forms of microscopy. Statistical approach based on the autocorrelation function gives quantitative description about the quality of the order in the periodic structure and about the nanoparticles averaged diameter (80 nm). We also present the optical extinction spectrum of the Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structure (LIPSS)-containing area of the glass, which unusually shows several bands in the visible range. The period of 160 nm of the periodic structure is short enough to allow coupling between nanoparticles, which makes it a possible candidate for plasmon-based optical applications.

RESUMO

Formation and stability of paramagnetic molecular centers were studied in AlCl3-NaOH-DL-alpha-valine by ESR spectroscopy. In Al3(OH)9(valine)1 x 3H2O gamma-irradiated at room temperature the valine radical [formula: see text] was detected. The radical was formed by abstraction of a hydrogen atom from the valine molecule coupled to the aluminum hydroxide matrix. Stability of the radical depended critically on structural properties of the aluminum hydroxide matrix. In aluminum hydroxide with the ratio (Al)/(Valine) = 20, either no paramagnetic species were detected (irradiation in air) or a singlet at g = 2.008 of 1.8 mT linewidth was detected (irradiation in vacuum) at room temperature. Primary paramagnetic species (gamma irradiation at 77 K) in Al3(OH)9(Val)1 x 3H2O are chloride paramagnetic centers and the primary neutral valine radical [formula: see text] It was formed by abstraction of the NH2 group from the valine molecule. With warming, this radical was not transformed to the radical (I).
