RESUMO
Las intoxicaciones son cuadros frecuentemente tratados en los Servicios de Urgencias y cuando estos se agravan o precisan de tratamiento médico avanzado, el paciente se remite a las Unidades de Cuidados Intensivos (UCIs). Las causas que llevan al usuario a demandar la prestación de servicios sanitarios son múltiples: dolor, alteraciones gastrointestinales, nerviosas, etc., provocadas por las características específicas del tóxico. Asimismo, la causaque ha motivado la intoxicación puede ser de naturaleza variada: accidentes laborales, descuidos fortuitos, intentos autolíticos u homicidas, etc. Las intoxicaciones agudas por arsénico, actualmente empleado en el mediorural como plaguicida, comprometen la vida del paciente al inhibir la actividad enzimática y producir shock y fallo hepático y renal principalmente. A pesar de la baja incidencia de estas intoxicaciones, el pronóstico que tienen los pacientes intoxicados es malo. El propósito de este trabajo es compartir nuestra experiencia del cuidado enfermero de los pacientes ingresados en la UCI diagnosticados de intoxicación aguda por arsénico, con el objetivo de contribuir al conocimiento del manejo clínico de los mismos
Intoxications are a condition frequently treated at the Emergency department. In cases where these intoxications become more severe or require advanced medical treatment, the patient is transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). There are multiple reasons that lead the user to require the delivery of healthcare services; pain, gastrointestinal symptoms, nervous symptoms, etc. whichwill vary depending on the specific characteristics of the toxic substance. Likewise, the cause for the intoxication can be of different nature: work-relatedaccident, accidental oversights, suicidal attempts or homicide attempts, etc. Acute arsenic intoxications (caused by arsenic, a compound used in rural areas as a potent plague insecticide) compromise the life of the patients because arsenic inhibits enzymatic activity and leads to shock and hepatic and renal failure, mainly. Despite the low incidence of these intoxications, the prognosis of intoxicated patients is poor. The objective of this paper is to share our experience in the nursing care of patients diagnosed with acute arsenic admitted into the ICU and to contribute to the furthering of knowledge in the clinical management of these patients
