RESUMO

A three-year-old, sexually intact, female American Staffordshire terrier was presented with chronic postpartum vulvar haemorrhage. Sixty-one days before presentation, the bitch had whelped 10 puppies. A tentative diagnosis of subinvolution of placental sites was made when syncythial trophoblast-like cells were identified in the specimen collected through the opening of the cervix by endoscopy. Five weeks after the diagnosis, the bitch was clinically healthy with no vaginal bleeding and spontaneous recovery occurred without surgical treatment.

RESUMO

Within the last 19 years, 20 cases of placentitis post partum have been studied at the clinic. On 14 occasions the condition took the form of excessive uterine bleeding (metrorrhagia) post partum and, on five occasions, of prolonged vaginal discharge lasting 8-13 weeks post partum. One bitch with a clinically undetectable form of this disorder was diagnosed at ovariohysterectomy. The average age of the bitches was 4.5 years (range 2-6 years). Examinations included abdominal palpation, vaginoscopy, vaginal smear examination and, if necessary, radiography and ultrasonography. The presence of decidua-like cells in the smear was confirmed as evidence of abnormal uterine involution. Six dogs were subjected to ovariohysterectomy; histological examination revealed inflamed and degenerated areas of the uterine surface. Decidualike cells were seen for up to 10 weeks post partum. Fourteen bitches were treated successfully with an injection of the progestagen Niagestin (25-50 mg per bitch) and both intrauterine and parenteral antibiotics were administered. The discharge stopped within a few days in all dogs treated. A subsequent normal pregnancy occurred in four cases.

RESUMO

Cytologic investigations were carried out of a total of 140 cows with regard to the vaginal mucosa in the event of disturbed functions in the course of the sexual cycle: hypofunction of the ovaries (71 animals), persisting yellow bodies (34 animals), and estral and postestral cases of metrorrhagia (35 animals). Chamov's trichromatic method was employed to stain the smears and Véznik's cytogramme method--to carry out the recordings. It was found that in the case of ovarian hypofunction the mixed type of cell pictures prevailed (47.8 per cent), followed by the estrogenic type (39.4 per cent), and the progesterone type (12.6 per cent). In the case of persisting corpora lutea the mixed type of cell picture prevailed too--64.7 per cent, while the estrogenic and progesterone types were 17.6 per cent. Featuring in the postestral and estral metrorrhagia was the estrogenic type of cell picture (51.4 per cent), while the mixed type accounted for 45.7 per cent of the cases, and the progesterone one--for 2.8 per cent. It is suggested to use the cytovaginal method in combination with the routinely employed clinical and laboratory tests for the overall evaluation of the condition of the genital system in cows.

RESUMO

Studied was the time period for the setting in of an ovulation that did not really take place, and the follicular cysts in cows following calving with regard to the effectiveness of the preparation Gn-RH vet. "Berlin-Chemie" in the treatment of the diseased animals. Attempts were made to raise the conception rate of cows manifesting delayed ovulation (with estral and postestral metrorrhagia). It was found that the preparation was effective in the treatment of cows with follicular cysts when applied at the rate of 1 mg in i/m injections. The therapeutic result was 75.4 percent. When introduced at 0.5 mg some 60 min prior to insemination (that is to be performed before the appearance, resp., the presence of estral and post-estral bleeding) the preparation was shown to induce ovulation. It also prevented hemorrhages, and raised the conception rate at first insemination.
