RESUMO

We report a case of spontaneous resolution of a recurrent axillary cystic hygroma in a 4-year-old boy. He presented with a 1-year history of a cystic lump in the left axilla, which intermittently changed in size. Ultrasound suggested it was a lipoma, with raised suspicions of vascular malformation. Scans were discussed in a multidisciplinary meeting and provisional diagnosis of lymphocele or slow flow lymphovascular malformation was made. It was surgically excised and histology confirmed the lesion to be a cystic hygroma. However, it recurred within 3 weeks. The patient was booked for aspiration and treatment with sclerotic agent OK 432. He developed acute infection in the cystic hygroma a week before surgical intervention and was treated with antibiotics for 5 days by his general practitioner. Acute infection led to complete spontaneous resolution of the cystic hygroma within a week. There are no other reported cases in which recurrent cystic hygroma has resolved after a week of acute infection.

RESUMO

Lymphangioma circumscriptum is an uncommon benign disorder of skin and subcutaneous tissues characterized by dilated lymphatic channels. It is an uncommon vascular tumor and it rarely becomes infected. We report a 20-year-old man who had an infected giant tumor in his left thigh. After an extensive resection and radiofrequency energy therapy, he recovered well with an acceptable cosmetic result. We followed up the patient for 2 years without any recurrence.

RESUMO

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum has usually been isolated in cases of pharyngitis and wound infections. Rarely it has been reported to cause deep tissue infections. Here, a case of a 71-year-old-male, who developed a pelvic abscess due to A. haemolyticum that initially was thought to be a malignant tumour, is described.

RESUMO

Mesenchymal chondrosarcomas represent less than 10% of all chondrosarcomas. The majority of these tumors arise from the skeleton; only 22% have an extraosseous origin. Of the extraskeletal locations, the meninges, brain, and thigh are the most common. Involvement of the forearm is a rare occurrence. This case report describes an extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma involving the forearm.

RESUMO

Adult male Syrian hamsters were inoculated subcutaneously with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1, 10(6) PFU) or ultraviolet-inactivated HSV-1. One week later 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA, 2 x 20 nmol weekly) was topically applied to the dorsal skin at the site of virus inoculation for 6 months. Control animals received HSV-1 only or topical treatment with TPA in acetone or acetone alone. Small tumour nodules developed in the HSV-1 group close to the site of virus inoculation 10-15 months after the beginning of the experiment. The neoplasms were classified as angiolipomas, chondromyxomas, a hibernoma, and an unclassified tumor resembling a Kaposi sarcoma in humans. The topical TPA treatment alone induced melanocytic hyperplasia and sebaceous gland hyperplasia. The soft-tissue tumours differed markedly from the structure of the soft-tissue sarcomas induced in Syrian hamsters by viruses of the papova and polyoma groups. Since the spontaneous incidence of benign soft-tissue tumours in our close hamster colony is extremely low, we concluded that mutagenic HSV-1 effects on hamster mesenchymal cell DNA may be involved in the process of formation of the observed benign neoplasms.

RESUMO

Human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6 and/or 11 have been associated with benign lesions, while types 16, 18, 31, and 33 are prevalent in malignant lesions. This case report describes the findings in a verrucous carcinoma of the leg, which was examined for HPV types 11, 16, and 18 by in situ DNA hybridization. The lesion gave positive results for HPV subtypes 11 and 18, a combination that, to our knowledge, has not been previously reported in this neoplasm.

RESUMO

Under in vitro cultivation of 14 soft tissue malignant human tumors there were obtained two cell lines: from cells of hypernephroma (Hn-7) and malignant paraganglioma (Par-1). The transfer of the cultured Par-1 cells medium to recipient cells CET enabled obtaining the transformed cell line 63. This line possesses all the features of in vitro growing tumor cells: it results in tumor growth in young Syrian hamsters, when injected retrobuccally, and in newborn animals injected percutaneously, also it yields cell colonies growth in semiliquid agar. The cultured line 63 ran through more than 100 passages, its isoenzymic assay indicates that it belongs to a human type and differs from cells HeLa, the karyotypic pattern shows the number of chromosomes to be close to the dyploid number in man. In the cell line 63 there is the synthesis of two viruses: RNA-containing one belonging to the orthomixo-group and DNA-containing one belonging to human oncoviruses of the Papova group.

RESUMO

Subcutaneously established tumors in WKA rats were treated with polycation DEAE-dextran (DEAE-D) and Friend murine leukemia virus (F-MuLV). This idea was based on "xenogenization of tumors," which is defined as the immunologic regression of transplanted tumors in syngeneic rats after artificial infection of tumors with murine leukemia viruses. Regressions of subcutaneously established tumors were induced in 13 of 40 (33%) rats by injection of DEAE-D and F-MuLV. Intratumor injections of DEAE-D and F-MuLV increased the regression of tumors in 7 of 12 (58%) rats as compared to that of tumors in 6 of 28 (21%) rats treated with DEAE-D and F-MuLV by other injection routes. Electron-microscopic and immunofluorescence examinations revealed that tumor cells were infected with F-MuLV and acquired F-MuLV-related surface antigen on the cell surfaces. Therefore, the regression in rats of subcutaneously established tumors by the injection of DEAE-D and F-MuLV may have been due to an immunologic mechanism that may have been the same as the xenogenization of transplanted tumors previously infected with murine leukemia viruses.
