Objective: the objective of the work was to establish the prevalence of Porphyromonas gingivalis in patients with periodontitis and relate it to the severity of the disease. Material and methods: 45 systemically healthy patients, aged between 35 and 65 years old, participated. The degree of periodontitis was defined according to the criteria of Papapanou et al. As a control group, 20 patients of both sexes without periodontitis and without systemic diseases were included. Gingival fluid samples were taken from two deeper sites. Porphyromonas gingivalis was detected by PCR (polymerase chain reaction). Results: the relative frequency of periodontitis was 13.3% grade I, 46.7% grade II and 40% grade III. The male sex presented periodontitis grade III 72.2% and grade II 52.3%. Grade I was recorded more frequently in the female sex, 66.7%. The prevalence of Porphyromonas gingivalis in the population with periodontitis was 44.4%. Statistically significant differences were obtained between the degrees of severity of periodontitis and the presence of Porphyromonas gingivalis (p = 0.0002, α = 5%). Conclusion: periodontitis predominated in males. The prevalence of Porphyromonas gingivalis in the population with chronic periodontitis was 44.4% and its presence is related to severity (AU)

INTRODUCTION: Supportive periodontal therapy (SPT) is an essential phase of periodontal disease prevention and therapy. The objectives of this review are: a) to determine the different aspects from SPT; b) to know the value of SPT in long term results after active periodontal therapy; c) to review the patient, the tooth and the site related risk factors; d) to establish clinical protocols for managing the different situations. Materials, METHODS AND RESULTS: For the preparation of this work, 46 scientific articles have been analyzed the MEDLINE and Cochrane databases have been used to make the search. DISCUSSION: The objectives of SPT are to prevent the initiation or recurrence of periodontal diseases. Independently of the type of treatment, the clinical outcomes won't improve if we don't perform a professional SPT. To establish the appointment intervals and the sites to be treated, we have to evaluate the risk factors associated to the patient, the tooth and the site

RESUMO

There are approximately 2 million children living in the state of Michigan who will receive dental care with one of more than 5,500 MDA member dentists. Of these 5,500 MDA members, only approximately 100 are pediatric dentists.(1-3) Thus, it's safe to say that most children will find their dental homes in general dental offices. These general dentists will be providing preventive, diagnostic, and restorative care to most children under most circumstances. And with that in mind, it's of great importance that all dentists be comfortable providing high quality care to the majority of children, referring only a select group for care by a pediatric dentist.

RESUMO

This study provides a forward-thinking assessment of the factors likely to affect future trends in dental care in the United States. We developed a forecasting model based on historical data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey to determine how demographic trends and recent health care policies will affect dental care use in the future. Our forecasts suggest that the medical and dental insurance reforms instituted under the Affordable Care Act will increase rates of dental care use and the number of dental visits, with utilization rates reaching 47 percent in 2026 and the number of visits reaching 334 million, under optimistic assumptions about take-up of pediatric dental coverage. Our forecasting model also indicates that visits for preventive dental care will increase in the future, while visits for dental treatment will decline. Our forecasts can be used to infer future need for different types of dental care providers and to provide policy makers with the information needed to consider the expansion of mandates for dental benefit coverage to adult populations covered by Medicaid, Medicare, and individual and small-group plans sold on health insurance exchanges.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Since its foundation in 1920, prevention of oral disease has been a priority for the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and the commitment of the organisation to the subject area is clearly expressed in its mission to improve oral health worldwide. The IADR has a current global membership of almost 11,000 people who share an interest in oral and craniofacial research. CONTRIBUTION OF IADR: This paper provides an overview of the contribution of IADR to supporting research and associated activities in disease prevention, in disseminating knowledge and in advocating for better oral health for all citizens of the world. It looks back over time and summarises current supports. Two more recent initiatives in disease prevention are described in more detail, the Global Oral Health Inequalities Research Agenda (GOHIRA) and the proceedings at the 2013 World Conference on Preventive Dentistry (WCPD, 2013), a joint initiative between IADR and WHO. Through organisational structure, meetings, publications, scientific groups and networks and external relations, IADR has been at the forefront of advancing research for the prevention of oral diseases. IADR is committed to ensuring research advances get disseminated and implemented and at the same time encourages and advocates for basic, clinical and translational research across disciplines so that we may uncover the major breakthrough in prevention of oral disease.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate time trends in dental service provision. METHODS: A random sample of Australian dentists was surveyed by mailed questionnaires in 1983-1984, 1993-1994, 2003-2004, and 2009-2010 (response rates 67-76%). The service rate per visit was collected from a log of services. RESULTS: The rate of service provision per visit [rate ratio (RR)] increased from 1983-1984 to 2009-2010 for the service areas of diagnostic (RR=1.8; 1.6-1.9), preventive (RR=1.9; 1.6-2.1), endodontic (RR=2.1; 1.7-2.6), and crown and bridge (RR=2.9; 2.3-3.8), whereas prosthodontic services decreased (RR=0.7; 0.6-0.9). CONCLUSIONS: The profile of services provided by dentists changed over the study period to include less emphasis on replacement of teeth and more on diagnosis, prevention, and retention of natural dentitions.
