RESUMO
A total of 119 patients filled a questionnaire. Its analysis revealed that women are more open to the dentist, though all the patients felt strained while seeing the doctor. Most patients highly appreciated personal qualities of their orthopedic dentists and showed high respect for them. Patients were generally well oriented in semantic features of the questionnaire.

The results of the studies of interrelation within the systems doctor-patient and patient-doctor are reported. A total of 249 orthopedists and 525 patients with removable dentures were interviewed. The data analysis revealed that there still exist unfavorable relations between doctors and patients elicited by an undue level of organization of the working unit and the lack in complexity in the patient's preparation to the procedure. Overcoming these drawbacks will be useful in improving patients-doctors relations and increasing in quality of medical assistance.

A questionnaire-based study has involved 132 patients. The strongest sources of fear occurring in orthopedic clinical practice have been identified. They include preparation of teeth (for crowns, inserts, widening of the root canals), oral injections, obtaining of dental impressions, the doctor's conclusion about a poor dental condition. This points vividly once again to the necessity of the use of premedication, application and injection anesthesia, and psychotherapeutic preparation of the patient prior to the above manipulations for creating a confidential patient-doctor relationship.

The literature and the results of the survey clearly confirm that physical attractiveness plays a major role in the social life and interaction among individuals. Cosmetic improvement is a powerful motivating factor leading people to seek treatment. Those who believe that the rewards of facial improvement will enable them to lead more satisfying and comfortable lives should be encouraged to proceed with the treatment. However, it is absolutely essential that those contemplating treatment be counseled before-hand and fully informed on the prognosis, risks and hazards, advantages and disadvantages of such procedures before embarking on treatment.

Despite repeated treatment failures, some individuals seek bite correction from a succession of dentists. Their pathological narcissism focuses on their bite, in a manner reminiscent of phantom limb phenomena. The dentist's diagnosis and treatment are manipulated until the patient claims them a failure and consults another dentist. The author suggests that this behavior represents a defense against paranoia and severe personality disorders.
