RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: We report a case study of mastoid cavity aural myiasis in an urban developed setting and review the relevant literature. DATA SOURCE: Retrospective case report and review of the English literature via PubMed. DATA SELECTION: English-language articles concerning aural myiasis and mastoid cavity myiasis were included. DATA EXTRACTION: Two previous case reports of mastoid cavity myiasis were identified and analyzed. CONCLUSION: Neglected mastoid cavity care, low socioeconomic status, poor personal hygiene, homelessness, and chronic suppurative otitis media are likely contributing factors to this uncommon presentation occurring in an urban setting.

RESUMO

Myiasis has been defined as the infestation of tissue with dipterous larvae that feed on the host's dead or living tissue. A new clinical report of otomyiasis in a 57-year-old woman caused by Wohlfahrtia magnifica was reported. A review of the English language literature reveals 5 articles on otomyiasis cases caused by W. magnifica. Although it is not a frequent manifestation in otorhinolaryngology, the opportunity of its occurrence always exists. In the treatment, a combination of suctioning and alligator forceps was used to remove larvae. Also, tympanoplasty was performed for the reconstruction of perforated ear.

RESUMO

We report here the case of myiasis of the mastoid cells in a 50-year old Saudi farmer. Eight larvae of suspected Calliphorid fly were extracted from his right mastoid at examination in the clinic. The larvae almost ate into his brain, using their powerful screw-shaped mouth parts. It is the first report of Calliphorid larvae affecting the mastoid cells from Saudi Arabia. The epidemiological and clinical implications of this finding are discussed below.

RESUMO

Mite infestation of the ear is an unusual clinical problem that is easily cured with simple measures and recurrent infestation has not been reported till date. We present here a patient who developed recurrent infestation of otherwise healthy mastoid cavities with the storage mite Caloglyphus berlesei, secondary to occupational exposure. This kind of recurrent mite infestation of the ear has not been described before.
