O sarampo é, ainda, uma das principais causas de morte em crianças menores de cinco anos em todo o mundo, sobretudo as desnutridas e as que vivem em países de baixa renda. Em 2016, o Brasil ganha o certificado de eliminação da circulação do vírus do sarampo da Organização Pan-Americana de Saúde, o qual declara o país livre da doença. Contudo, nos últimos três anos, o sarampo volta a ter relevância em Saúde Pública devido ao surgimento de novos casos. O estudo trata-se de uma Revisão Integrativa, apoiada na questão norteadora "Como está sendo a atuação da Estratégia de Saúde da Família frente a prevenção e controle das doenças imunopreveníveis?". Pretende-se retratar a atuação dos profissionais da Atenção Primária, especialmente dos enfermeiros, frente às doenças imunopreveníveis, a fim de contribuir para um melhor direcionamento na prática de assistência à saúde e evidenciar a importância das atividades educativas em saúde.(AU)

Measles is also one of the main causes of death in children under the age of five worldwide, especially malnourished children and those living in low-income countries. In 2016, Brazil gains the certificate of eliminating the circulation of the measles virus from the Pan American Health Organization, which declares the country free of the disease. However, in the last three years, measles is again relevant in Public Health due to the emergence of new cases. The study is an Integrative Review, based on the guiding question "How is the Family Health Strategy acting in the prevention and control of preventable diseases?". It is intended to portray the performance of Primary Care professionals, especially nurses, in the face of vaccine-preventable diseases, in order to contribute to a better direction in the practice of health care and to highlight the importance of educational activities in health.(AU)

El sarampión es también una de las principales causas de muerte en niños menores de cinco años en todo el mundo, especialmente niños desnutridos y aquellos que viven en países de bajos ingresos. En 2016, Brasil obtiene el certificado de eliminación de la circulación del virus del sarampión de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud, que declara que el país está libre de la enfermedad. Sin embargo, en los últimos tres años, el sarampión nuevamente es relevante en la salud pública debido a la aparición de nuevos casos. El estudio es una Revisión Integrativa, basada en la pregunta guía "¿Cómo está actuando la Estrategia de Salud Familiar en la prevención y el control de enfermedades prevenibles?". Su objetivo es retratar el desempeño de los profesionales de Atención Primaria, especialmente las enfermeras, frente a las enfermedades prevenibles por vacunación, con el fin de contribuir a una mejor dirección en la práctica de la atención médica y resaltar la importancia de las actividades educativas en salud.(AU)

As the increasingly fierce debate about vaccines grows, so do the number of measles cases. Personal choice, inaccurate understanding, and legislative action are fueling vaccine refusal for this previously eradicated, highly contagious viral infection. In August 2019, measles cases had spread to 30 U.S. states and were spreading globally, endangering mainly young children and those unable to be vaccinated. Herd immunity is being eroded as parents refuse vaccinations or choose alternate vaccine schedules. Nurses are in a prime position to educate and advocate for vaccinations that safeguard public health.

Measles: Still a Significant Health Threat.

Measles (Rubeola), although considered eradicated in the United States, still causes periodic outbreaks. Vaccine refusal leads to vulnerable pockets of individuals who may become infected once the virus is imported from countries where it is endemic. In turn, these individuals may spread the virus to young infants and to other vulnerable individuals. Many healthcare providers are not familiar with this disease or with the factors that contribute to the risk of spread. Measles causes a serious febrile illness that may lead to pneumonia, blindness, deafness, neurological disorders, and even death. Patients with measles need supportive care and administration of oral vitamin A. The measles vaccine is highly effective and considered extremely safe, but misinformation about the safety of this and other vaccines has decreased immunization coverage in some areas of the country. Mandatory immunization laws exist in every state and have been upheld by courts including the United States Supreme Court, but laws and exemptions vary among states. Nurses can play a strong role in care of patients with measles, case identification, and prevention of transmission. Most importantly, because nurses hold positions of trust in their communities, they should be tireless frontline advocates for immunization. The purpose of this article is to provide information on measles, its transmission, signs and symptoms, treatment, prevention, and relevant laws and regulations.

Measles, once a common childhood illness that many older school nurses could recognize without difficulty, needs review again after reemerging from Europe and other continents. A highly contagious disease, which has been referenced since the seventh century, the virus can cause serious illness and death, despite the fact that it is vaccine preventable. School nurses are wise to review the pathogenesis, occurrences, incubation, and communicability as well as methods to diagnose and treat measles in order to prevent an outbreak.
