Reglas y preceptos culturales de la expresión emocional en México: su medición / Measuring rules and cultural precepts of emotional expression in Mexico

La cultura interviene continuamente en la forma en la que los seres humanos Se van adaptando a su grupo social, ya que establece modelos que usualmente determinan la pertinencia de la forma en la que se expresan emociones, se hacen interpretaciones y se emiten conductas alineadas a los estándares (Bruner, 1986). Una de las principales contribuciones de Díaz-Guerrero (1967, 2003) es la idea de que una sociocultura es un sistema de premisas interrelacionadas que norman sentimientos, ideas, relaciones interpersonales, papeles sociales, reglas de interacción y situaciones. El propósito de este estudio fue el diseño y validación de 5 medidas de premisas históricosocio- culturales de la expresión emocional (PHSC’sEE) de la felicidad, el amor, la tristeza, el enojo y el miedo. Los hallazgos señalan la obtención de 5 pruebas válidas y confiables que señalan conformaciones factoriales distintas y apegadas al contexto de la cultura mexicana.

Culture continuously impacts the way human beings adapt to their particular social group. This is due to the fact that it establishes models that determine the property of emotional expression, the way to interpret situations and the correct behavior for each ecosystem (Bruner, 1986). One of the most important contributions of Díaz-Guerrero (1967, 2003) is the idea that a socio-culture is a system of interrelated beliefs that regulate feelings, ideas, personal relationships, social roles, interaction rules among individuals and situations. To assess the socio-cultural rules and beliefs of emotional expressions, we designed and validated five measures of historic-socio-cultural premises of emotional expression (PHSC’sEE Premisas Historico-socioculturales de la Expresión Emocional in Spanish) of happiness, love, sadness, anger and fear. Findings show the existence of five valid and reliable tests that allow us to recognize conceptually clear and statistically robust factorial configurations depicting emotions in the Mexican culture.

[Punctuating ideas on the methodological development of social representations in Brazilian researches]. / Pontuando idéias sobre odesenvolvimento metodológico das representações sociais nas pesquisas brasileiras.

This text proposes an alternative approach to the methodological discussions on the studies of social representation in the field of nursing, which are usually anchored in an opposition between quantitative and qualitative methods. It is argued that such an opposition is just an apparent one, since it is possible to observe similar results in studies conducted with different methods. With a basis on the thought of several authors in the field of social representations, the question is treated from the standpoint of the distinction between a processual and a structural approach to the phenomenon of social representation. It is proposed a taxonomy that, in departing from those perspectives, takes into consideration the data collection and data analysis implied techniques, as well as the plan of the representation to which the researcher wants to get access.

2004 American Sociological Association Presidential address: for public sociology*.

Responding to the growing gap between the sociological ethos and the world we study, the challenge of public sociology is to engage multiple publics in multiple ways. These public sociologies should not be left out in the cold, but brought into the framework of our discipline. In this way we make public sociology a visible and legitimate enterprise, and, thereby, invigorate the discipline as a whole. Accordingly, if we map out the division of sociological labor, we discover antagonistic interdependence among four types of knowledge: professional, critical, policy, and public. In the best of all worlds the flourishing of each type of sociology is a condition for the flourishing of all, but they can just as easily assume pathological forms or become victims of exclusion and subordination. This field of power beckons us to explore the relations among the four types of sociology as they vary historically and nationally, and as they provide the template for divergent individual careers. Finally, comparing disciplines points to the umbilical chord that connects sociology to the world of publics, underlining sociology's particular investment in the defense of civil society, itself beleaguered by the encroachment of markets and states.
