RESUMO

The effects of weak combined magnetic fields adjusted to the parametric resonance for Ca2+ and K+ and extremely weak alternating magnetic field on the metamorphosis of the meal-worm beetle Tenebrio molitor have been studied. It was shown that the exposure of pupas of insects to all above-indicated types of fields stimulates the metamorphosis. However, after the exposure to weak combined magnetic fields adjusted to the parametric resonance for Ca2+ and K+, the number of insects with anomalies increases, which is not observed by the action of the weak alternating magnetic field.

RESUMO

Numerous data of long-term investigations of weak agents on morphogenetic processes in invertebrates (regeneration of planarians, Dugesia (Girardia) tigrina and postembryonic development of insects, the grain beetle Tenebrio molitor) have been analyzed. Weak physical and chemical factors were used: electromagnetic radiation, static, alternating, and combined magnetic fields, and low concentrations of solutions of neuropeptides. Some common features of the influence of weak factors on morphogenesis were found, namely, the instability and the opposite direction of the effect. The dependence of the effects on external conditions and the dynamics of physiological functions of objects was established.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The morphometric characteristics of A1 and A2 protocerebral neurosecretory neurons (cell and nuclei size, number of nucleoli in the nuclei); corpora allata size, nuclei size, cell number, were investigated in the pupae of yellow mealworm, Tenebrio molitor (L.), exposed to a strong static magnetic field of 320 mT maximum induction (10,000 times higher than the Earth's). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The experimental groups of Tenebrio molitor pupae were: A control group exposed only to natural magnetic field and sacrificed at the eighth day of pupal development (C); and pupae kept in a strong static magnetic field for eight days and then sacrificed (MF). Serial brain cross-sections were stained using the Alcian Blue Floxin technique. All the parameters were analyzed and measurements were performed using an image processing and analysis system (Leica, Cambridge, UK) linked to a Leica DMLB light microscope (program is QWin - Leica's Quantimet Windows-based image analysis tool kit). RESULTS: The values of morphometric parameters of neurosecretory neurons and corpora allata were significantly increased after exposure of the pupae to the strong magnetic field. CONCLUSIONS: The strong magnetic field influence characteristics of protocerebral neurosecretory neurons and corpora allata in the late Tenebrio molitor pupae.

RESUMO

The activity of large dorsomedial protocerebral A2' neurosecretory neurons were investigated in late pupae of Tenebrio molitor L, which were exposed to a static magnetic field of 320 mT. Experimental groups were C: the control group which was kept at 5 meters from the magnet; CMF: pupae which were reared in control conditions and sacrificed on the eighth day of pupal stage (parents were kept in a magnetic field); and MF: pupae kept in a permanent magnetic field for eight days. Our results indicate the effects of a static magnetic field on the cytological characteristics and activity of large A2' neurosecretory neurons of Tenebrio molitor pupae.

RESUMO

The effect of weak electromagnetic radiation (36 GHz, 100 mu W/cm2) on the development of the grain beetle Tenebrio molitor was studied. Insects were irradiated in different larval instars and at the pupal stage. It was found that weak electromagnetic radiation stimulated the molting and pupation of larvae and the metamorphosis of pupae. The stimulating effect of radiation was weak when animals were exposed in the initial period of the instar and the pupal stage and was more pronounced if the irradiation was carried out in the second half of the current instar and the pupil stage. The effect of weak electromagnetic radiation on the development of beetle can be related to the function of the hormones of metamorphosis.

RESUMO

In order to explain some effects of microwave irradiation on insects it is necessary to consider a mathematical model. The knowledge of dielectric properties of a typical insect tissue is crucial for such a model. A method based on shift of resonant frequency and of quality factor measurement in a resonator both before and after the insertion of samples was used. The method (measurements at a frequency of 2375 MHz) has been described in detail. A large number of measurements were performed on different kinds of typical insect tissues (cuticle, fat body, muscles, reproductive organs and eggs) for their dielectric properties. The values obtained compare well to those reported in the literature for some mammals. Differences seemed to depend on different water-to-fat content ratios. However, no simple dependence on the water content was found. Values obtained from insect tissue material have been discussed in detail.
