RESUMO

To better understand the relationship of newly developed computerized neurobehavioral tests to their examiner-administered counterparts, performance on four pairs of tests was compared among 185 solvent-exposed workers in the paint manufacturing industry. Two approaches to the comparison of the test methods (computer or examiner) were employed: (1) the multitrait-multimethod correlation matrix and (2) linear regression modeling of the difference scores between pairs of tests (same functional domain, different test formats). The data revealed that the validity criteria of the multitrait-multimethod technique were met for the tests of simple visual reaction time and attention-concentration (digit symbol substitution). Linear regression analyses demonstrated that the digit symbol substitution and visual memory test pairs were differentially affected by age, vocabulary, solvent exposure, or manual dexterity. Overall, this latter approach holds promise as a means of understanding test format similarities and differences.

RESUMO

In order to better evaluate the effects of centrally active drugs, a new computer based set of psychomotor tests was developed. Compared to the older apparati, the new set is very flexible and easy to operate allowing the measurement of hand/eye coordination, attention and several types of reaction skills. To evaluate the sensitivity and usefulness of the new tests, the effects of alcohol (oral doses of 0.5 g/kg and 1.0 g/kg) were studied in twelve healthy volunteers. The peak blood alcohol concentration after the larger dose was 0.86 g/l, and the effects were clearly seen with all new tests. The smaller dose of alcohol gave 0.33 g 1 peak blood alcohol concentration and it impaired significantly only coordination at 1 hr after drinking. The results suggest that the new tests are at least as sensitive and reliable as older psychomotor tests detecting the effects of central depressant agents. The advantage of the new tests is that they are easy to operate and easy to modify without any specific programming skills. Because they can be used with a computer which is easy to transport, these tests are suitable for use in clinical areas to conduct studies with patients.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to construct and validate a problem-solving version of the existing Allen Cognitive Level Test (ACL) (Allen, 1985). The new problem-solving version of the ACL (ACL-PS) follows the theoretical developments of the cognitive disability theory and the information processing approach. It was constructed to provide a more accurate assessment of the problem-solving process as well as task performance, especially at the higher cognitive levels. Both tests were administered to a psychiatric adolescent group (n = 49) who were subdivided according to diagnosis and to a matched nondysfunctional control group (n = 29). The results showed that both the ACL and the ACL-PS differentiated significantly between the patients and the control subjects and among the patient groups. At Level 6 of the ACL, none of the subjects needed any demonstration, with all scores distributed between independent performance or performance following verbal instructions only, that is, problem-solving phases that were added with the ACL-PS. The scoring of the ACL-PS is provided in addition to detailed scoring of the cognitive levels. It is suggested that the ACL-PS be implemented as a clinical evaluative tool with adolescents.

RESUMO

A large scale personnel testing imposes some specific demands on an apparatus used and it is necessary for developers to take these into account. To bridge a gap between present scientific instruments for psychological research and applied settings, the multifunctional psychodiagnostic system "Multipsychometer-01" adapted for a large scale personnel testing has been developed. The structure, main peculiarities, and some technical parameters of the system are described.

RESUMO

Personality assessment of children and adolescents experiencing an early, profound hearing loss is hampered by the lack of instruments standardized and/or developed primarily for use with deaf clients. Further compounding the problem are the relatively few psychologists trained in and/or experienced with deaf personality assessment. This article reviews the rudimentary requirements for personality assessment with the deaf and critiques the available personality tests that are either used or useable in assessing the deaf.

RESUMO

This work presents the validation of a French version of the emotional self rating scale by Izard (Differential Emotion Scale). This scale is based on the theory of the Discrete Emotions which proposes the existence of ten fundamental emotions. This self-rating scale consists of thirty emotional adjectives (three for each emotion). The validation was done by using a non inductive method (by asking the subject to describe his present emotional state) with 84 control subjects. It shows that this version is valid. Main results are first the binarisation of the emotions (positive and negative), then the existence of complex factors with psychopathological meaning after factorial analysis. These results are in agreement with a theory of expressive emotional levels more than with the theory of discrete emotions in psychopathology.

RESUMO

Sustained attention in schizophrenia was assessed with a newly developed, computer-controlled, modified version of the continuous performance test in which specific attentional effects can be empirically distinguished from nonspecific factors by signal detection theory (SDT). Results indicated that patients showed a more rapid decline in specific attentional, but not nonspecific processes, as measured by SDT parameters of A' and B", respectively.

RESUMO

A differentiated model of self-esteem, based on William James's (1890), C. H. Cooley's (1902/1968), and G. H. Mead's (1925/1968) works and developed by Dr. Susan Harter (1983), is presented as a valuable tool for the occupational therapist to use in evaluation and intervention. Competence and social support are considered important components, and discounting is presented as a mechanism for the maintenance or improvement of self-esteem. Social comparison, social desirability, and defensiveness are discussed as important considerations, particularly regarding children with disabilities.

RESUMO

In order to develop a technique which allows the detection of Pattern A (P.A.) we present in this paper a series of steps for constructing an observation grill (ethogram) which allows for the quantification of behavior in situation of structured interview. The behavioral units making up the final ethogram are derived from inter-item correlations taken from a population of 48 subjects who had suffered heart attacks. The observations on this population permit an inclusion score in the P.A. These observations also confirm that the P.A. present a risk factor which is independent of classical risk factors. A significative positive correlation with work stress has been found showing, in accordance with the view of Friedman and Rosenman that the P.A. corresponds to a particular behavioral pattern which is dependent on the work environment.

RESUMO

In this article the authors describe the measurement error associated with the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory when used with a population of Navajo women. This instrument was used with 29 Navajo women to determine if the questions were culturally acceptable. The results showed that this instrument has some content validity issues when used with Navajo women. More research is needed using this instrument as well as other psychometrically sound self-esteem measures with cultural and racial groups other than whites.

RESUMO

This study describes the development of a reliable and valid instrument that can be used to assess attachment in older adults: the Lipson-Parra Adult Attachment Scale (LAAS). The three-phase design included a critique of the initial 60-item instrument by a panel of experts, a pilot test with 16 respondents, and a field study with 211 respondents ranging in age from 65 to 99 years. The construct validity of the tool was established via factor analysis. A high alpha coefficient of .97 provided strong evidence for its reliability. Significant correlations were found between attachment scores and items regarding residential proximity, contact frequency, and the closeness of the parental relationships. One-way analysis of variance produced significant differences in means according to marital status, number of living children, and living arrangement. Subsequent testing of the revised 20-item LAAS on a sample of 202 respondents provided further support for the reliability and validity of the LAAS. With the development of a reliable and valid instrument that can be used to assess attachment in adults, a better understanding of bonds in older individuals will now be possible.

RESUMO

The Life Closure Scale (LCS) is a measure of the multidimensions of psychological adaptation during the dying process and was developed in two phases. The first phase of instrument construction was based on a retroductive method utilizing: theoretical and empirical sources, a small qualitative study and analysis of concept definitions. Three subscales identifying dimensions of psychological processes and patterns of adaptation were defined: the self-reconciled, self-restructuring, and self-closing. A corrected content validity of .83 was established by a panel of experts. The LCS scale of 45 items was devised into a 5 point Likert scale with responses from 1 (not at all) to 5 (most of the time). Phase two began a study, with 45 hospice subjects, to determine internal consistency reliability and construct validity. On preliminary testing with 20 subjects, the self-closing subscale was found to interrelate with the other two subscales. An intercorrelation of r = -.10 defined the presence of two independent subscales: the self-reconciled and the self-restructuring. Internal consistency reliability coefficients of a = .85 for the self-reconciled subscale and a = .86 for the self-restructuring subscale. Construct validity is reported for the LCS. A Pearson correlation coefficient of r = .75 was found between the LCS and the convergent measure of quality of life and an r = -.60 substantiated discriminant validity with a depression tool. Plans for tool development include further testing.

RESUMO

Previous studies using nonstandardized instruments measuring coping with childhood cancer, suggested families coped well. The concepts of encapsulation and at-risk behaviors were derived from this literature as coping strategies. Encapsulation strategies normalize the experience and control the meaning of the illness. At-risk strategies include complying with treatment and protecting the child. Three purposes of this paper are (a) describe parents' coping in 45 families whose child has cancer using a standardized instrument (CHIP), (b) compare the findings from this study with previous studies, and (c) explore the concepts of encapsulation and at-risk as family coping strategies using selected items on the CHIP. Internal reliabilities ranged from .71 to .79 on the CHIP's three scales. In this study, correlational and descriptive analysis were conducted. The CHIP's psychometric properties in this study ranged from .76 to .84. The newly developed scales of encapsulation and at-risk had internal reliabilities of .74, .74, .74, and .46 for the fathers and mothers. Using the CHIP scales parents' coping was similar to other samples in which the CHIP was used. With the exception of the mothers' at-risk scale, a cohesive family coping measure was evidenced by the acceptable internal reliabilities on the newly developed scales. Further development of the encapsulation scale will provide a family coping measure useful in testing conceptually based nursing interventions.

RESUMO

To understand and assess the concept "quality of life", it must be analyzed. In this report it is postulated that quality of life covers life as a whole as well as different subdomains of life. Life quality is defined as perceived global satisfaction and satisfaction within a number of key domains with special emphasis on well-being. A comprehensive chart of relevant life domains is presented and a flexible package of tested rating techniques outlined. In order to obtain valid and sensitive assessments, pincer operations with various types of ratings are recommended.

RESUMO

The administration and scoring of paper and pencil measures present a host of logistical problems to clinicians, researchers and educators who rely heavily on these techniques. In addition to the expense of producing and reproducing these materials, the completed measures must be scored, the results must be reduced and recorded and the data must be analyzed. The introduction of human error at any of these steps may compromise the reliability of the obtained data and obstruct its valid interpretation. The Q-FAST computerized testing system is a software package which could improve the efficiency of collection, scoring and analysis of data obtained through such procedures.
