Benign mixed Müllerian (duct) vaginal tumor in a 12-y-old goat.

In human and veterinary medicine, mixed Müllerian tumors (MMTs) are rarely diagnosed neoplasms of the tubular female genital tract. Although there are case reports of malignant MMTs in various species, benign MMTs have only been described once in a macaque. Here we present a case of benign MMT in a 12-y-old goat, and review the literature on uterine, cervical, and vaginal neoplasia in goats. The doe was presented with vaginal discharge and was euthanized because of the high suspicion of intraabdominal neoplasia. On gross examination, an ulcerated vaginal mass was identified. Histologically, 2 distinct cell populations were present: smooth muscle cells that were well differentiated and positive for alpha-smooth muscle actin, and ciliated columnar epithelial cells that lined ductal structures and had no signs of malignancy. These findings led to the diagnosis of neoplasia of Müllerian origin. Benign MMT should be considered as a differential diagnosis for uterine and vaginal neoplasms in goats.

Uterine carcinosarcoma (malignant mixed Müllerian tumor): case report in a goat and literature review.

Carcinosarcomas are biphasic malignant tumors composed of 2 distinct neoplastic cell populations, epithelial cells and mesenchymal cells. A 13-y-old, female, mixed-breed goat was presented with a 1-wk history of anuria and lethargy. Transabdominal ultrasonography showed an irregular and heterogeneous structure in the region of the bladder and uterus and changes in the echogenicity of both kidneys. Given the poor prognosis, euthanasia was elected. Autopsy revealed a large mass within the uterine cervix and confirmed the changes in the urinary tract. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry revealed a mixed, anti-cytokeratin AE1/AE3-positive epithelial, and vimentin-positive mesenchymal neoplasm consistent with a homologous carcinosarcoma, also called malignant mixed Müllerian tumor, with areas of double-labeling. We highlight the complexity of the diagnosis of uterine neoplasms in domestic animals and in goats in particular.

Uterine heterologous malignant mixed Müllerian tumor in a dwarf rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus).

Malignant mixed Müllerian tumor (MMMT) is a rare neoplasm of the female genital system. A case of MMMT in the uterus of an 8-year-old female dwarf rabbit, which died with clinical signs associated with severe acute dyspnea and anorexia, is described. At necropsy, an oval, firm tumor was found in each of the 2 uterine horns. Numerous metastases were scattered throughout the mediastinum, thoracic diaphragm, and all pulmonary lobes. Microscopically, the tumors consisted of a poorly demarcated, unencapsulated neoplasm, composed of closely associated carcinomatous and sarcomatous components and areas of osteosarcomatous differentiation. Metastases were composed entirely of the sarcomatous component with osteosarcomatous differentiation. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic epithelial component was positive for cytokeratin and negative for α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), vimentin, and desmin. The sarcomatous component was diffusely and strongly positive for vimentin, focally positive for α-SMA (<20% of cells positive), and negative for desmin. The neoplasm was diagnosed as a heterologous MMMT with metastases to the lung, mediastinum, and thoracic diaphragm.

Spontaneous malignant mixed Müllerian tumor in a Wistar rat: a case report including immunohistochemistry.

This report presents a rare, spontaneous, heterologous, malignant mixed Müllerian tumor observed in a 98-week-old untreated Wistar rat. At necropsy, the right uterine horn was dilated and contained a mass of approximately 10 × 15 mm. Histopathologically the mass consisted of 2 parts with different morphologic characteristics, a polypoid mass protruding into the uterine lumen and a more solid part that replaced the adjacent uterine wall. The solid part exhibited characteristics of a highly infiltrative adenocarcinoma, whereas the composition of the polypoid mass was heterogeneous, consisting of a variety of benign and malignant epithelial and mesenchymal elements. The epithelial components included well-differentiated endometrial and squamous epithelium juxtaposed to carcinosarcomatous areas. The mesenchymal components consisted of well-differentiated cartilage and bone along with chondrosarcomatous, rhabdomyomatous, and other mesenchymal elements. Immunohistochemical analysis further supported the diagnosis of malignant mixed Müllerian tumor.

Bilateral ovarian malignant mixed Mullerian tumor in a dog.

Malignant mixed Müllerian tumor (MMMT) is a rare neoplasm of the female genital tract. We report a case of bilateral ovarian MMMT in a 10-year-old female dog. Ovaries were only moderately enlarged with a papillary surface and firm nodules. Multiple metastases were observed in the abdominal cavity and pulmonary parenchyma. Histologically, both ovaries had intermingled carcinomatous and sarcomatous components with cartilage and bone. Metastatic lesions were not mixed. The peritoneal metastases were carcinomatous; pulmonary metastases were sarcomatous. Carcinomatous elements of the MMMT were immunohistochemically positive for cytokeratin (CK) AE1/AE3, CK7, and vimentin and estrogen receptors. Conversely, the sarcomatous cells were positive for vimentin, but negative for CKs. Chondrocytes also expressed S-100 protein. On the basis of similarities to human ovarian MMMT, the diagnosis was heterologous malignant mixed Müllerian tumor of the ovary.

Malignant mixed mullerian tumor in a rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus): case report with immunohistochemistry.

A rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) with a homologous malignant mixed müllerian tumor (MMMT) of the uterus with decidualization in the sarcomatous components is described. On histologic examination, the neoplasm was characterized by a carcinomatous and a sarcomatous component with invasion of the myometrium. The epithelial component was a well-differentiated carcinoma, and the nonepithelial component contained large amounts of intracytoplasmic glycogen. The changes in stromal cells were morphologically similar to changes usually found in decidual cells in the pregnant uterus or in deciduosarcomas in rabbits. Results of immunohistochemical analysis indicated that the epithelial components stained positive with cytokeratin (CK7, AE1/3) and the decidual-stromal cells stained positive for vimentin, but did not stain with alpha-SMA, actin, and desmin. This case fulfills all the criteria of an MMMT in having a carcinomatous and a sarcomatous component, but differs from cases of MMMT in women in that the sarcomatous component had decidualized. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of a malignant mixed müllerian tumor in rabbits.

Uterine malignant mixed Müllerian tumor (Metaplasic carcinoma) in the cat: clinicopathologic features and proliferation indices.

A homologous malignant mixed Müllerian tumor of the uterus occurring in an 8-year-old Persian cat was described with regard to its clinical and pathologic features. A polypoid multinodular mass of the right uterine horn was shown by an ultrasound examination. Grossly, the right uterine horn was enlarged because of a vegetative and infiltrating tumor, grayish-white in color, that penetrated the uterine wall to the level of the perimetrium. Many metastatic nodules were found in abdominal and thoracic cavities. Histologically, the neoplasm had both carcinomatous and sarcomatous components and was diagnosed as an uterine malignant mixed Müllerian tumor. This is the fourth case reported in cats. The histologic features and proliferation rate of this tumor were similar to the corresponding human neoplasms, which occur mainly in postmenopausal women. The possible hormone dependence of the tumor is briefly discussed.
