The present study explored the neurotoxic impacts of lead (Pb) and the potential alleviating effect of Yucca schidigera extract (YSE) in Japanese quails. About 360 adult Japanese quails (8 weeks old) were used. Quails were randomly distributed to six groups with 4 replicates each: the control group (fed basal diet, BD), the BD + YSE1 and BD + YSE2 groups (BD + 100 and 200 mg/kg diet of YSE, respectively), the Pb group (BD + 100 mg/kg Pb), and the Pb + YSE1 and Pb + YSE2 groups (BD + Pb + 100 and 200 mg/kg YSE, respectively). This feeding trial lasted for 8 weeks. The exposure to Pb in the diet induced oxidative damage stress in the brain of exposed quails reflected by the significant increase in the oxidative markers including malonaldehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl (PC) and the significant reduction in the activities of antioxidants including catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and the reduced glutathione (GSH). Brain neurochemistry and enzyme activities were also altered following Pb exposure. Pb significantly reduced serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, GABA, Ach, and Na + /K + -ATPase activities. Pb dietary intoxication markedly increased brain inflammatory biomarkers, including tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), myeloperoxidase, and nitric oxide. Peripherally, Pb toxicity decreased the amino acid neurotransmitters (glutamic acid, glycine, and aspartic acid) in the serum of birds. At the transcriptomic level, Pb exposure upregulated the transcription patterns of CASP3, TNF-α, HSP70, and IL-1ß. The single effect of YSE maintained that all the assessed parameters were not changed compared to the control. Interestingly, the YSE co-supplementation with Pb alleviated the Pb-induced neuro-oxidative damages by lowering the lipid, protein, and DNA damage, and the inflammatory biomarkers.

This study isolated and purified a novel homogeneous arabinogalactan polysaccharide from Yucca schidigera extract (YSE), unveiled its unique structure and explored its antioxidant function. Firstly, the antioxidant potential of YSE was demonstrated in piglet trials. A homogeneous polysaccharide with a molecular weight of 24.2 kDa, designated as Yucca schidigera polysaccharide B (YPB), was isolated and purified from YSE. The monosaccharide composition of YPB was Rha, Araf, Galp, and Glcp, whose molar percentages were 2.8 %, 11.6 %, 45.5 %, and 40.0 %, respectively. Methylation analysis combined with 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance showed that YPB was a complex polysaccharide with a main glycosidic linkage pattern of →2)-α-ʟ-Rha-(1 â†’ 3)-ß-ᴅ-Galp-(1→3)-ß-ᴅ-Galp-(1 â†’ 3)-ß-ᴅ-Galp-(1 â†’ 3)-ß-ᴅ-Glcp-(1→, and branched Araf and Galp fragments were connected with the main chain through →3,6)-ß-ᴅ-Galp-(1→, →3,4)-ß-ᴅ-Glcp-(1→, and →2,4)-α-ʟ-Rha-(1→ linkages. Following the in vitro biochemical assays of bioactive components, YPB should be the contributor to the antioxidant activity in YSE. Based on the establishment of oxidative stress model, YPB exhibited strong antioxidant capacity and activated NRF2 pathway, and then provided protection against the damage induced oxidative stress in IPEC-J2 cells and rats. Further analysis with inhibitors found that this antioxidant effect was attributed to its interaction with epidermal growth factor receptor and mannose receptor, and stimulating PI3K/AKT pathway.

Y. schidigera contains a number of unusual polyphenols, derivatives of resveratrol and naringenin, called spiro-flavostilbenoids, which have potent in vitro anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and moderate cholinesterase inhibitory activities. To date, these compounds have not been tested in vivo for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of both single spiro-flavostilbenoids (yuccaol B and gloriosaol A) and phenolic fractions derived from Y. schidigera bark on scopolamine-induced anxiety and memory process deterioration using a Danio rerio model. Detailed phytochemical analysis of the studied fractions was carried out using different chromatographic techniques and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The novel tank diving test was used as a method to measure zebrafish anxiety, whereas spatial working memory function was assessed in Y-maze. In addition, acetylcholinesterase/butyrylcholinesterase (AChE/BChE) and 15-lipooxygenase (15-LOX) inhibition tests were performed in vitro. All pure compounds and fractions under study exerted anxiolytic and procognitive action. Moreover, strong anti-oxidant capacity was observed, whereas weak inhibition towards cholinesterases was found. Thus, we may conclude that the observed behavioral effects are complex and result rather from inhibition of oxidative stress processes and influence on cholinergic muscarinic receptors (both 15-LOX and scopolamine assays) than effects on cholinesterases. Y. schidigera is a source of substances with desirable properties in the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

The acute inflammation process is explained by numerous hypotheses, including oxidative stress, enzyme stimulation, and the generation of pro-inflammatory cytokines. The anti-inflammatory activity of Yucca gigantea methanol extract (YGME) against carrageenan-induced acute inflammation and possible underlying mechanisms was investigated. The phytochemical profile, cytotoxic, and antimicrobial activities were also explored. LC-MS/MS was utilized to investigate the chemical composition of YGME, and 29 compounds were tentatively identified. In addition, the isolation of luteolin-7-O-ß-d-glucoside, apigenin-7-O-ß-d-glucoside, and kaempferol-3-O-α-l-rhamnoside was performed for the first time from the studied plant. Inflammation was induced by subcutaneous injection of 100 µL of 1% carrageenan sodium. Rats were treated orally with YGME 100, 200 mg/kg, celecoxib (50 mg/kg), and saline, respectively, one hour before carrageenan injection. The average volume of paws edema and weight were measured at several time intervals. Levels of NO, GSH, TNF-α, PGE-2, serum IL-1ß, IL-6 were measured. In additionally, COX-2 immunostaining and histopathological examination of paw tissue were performed. YGME displayed a potent anti-inflammatory influence by reducing paws edema, PGE-2, TNF-α, NO production, serum IL-6, IL-1ß, and COX-2 immunostaining. Furthermore, it replenished the diminished paw GSH contents and improved the histopathological findings. The best cytotoxic effect of YGME was against human melanoma cell line (A365) and osteosarcoma cell line (MG-63). Moreover, the antimicrobial potential of the extract was evaluated against bacterial and fungal isolates. It showed potent activity against Gram-negative, Gram-positive, and fungal Candida albicans isolates. The promoting multiple effects of YGME could be beneficial in the treatment of different ailments based on its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic effects.

Plants are always better choice for treatment of disease in contrast to synthetic agents due to their less toxicity, and free availability with minor limitations of identifications, purity and potency which should be addressed. The objective of current study was to explore the anti-inflammatory effect of methanol extract of Yucca elephantipes roots by using oxidative burst assay and carrageen an induced rat paw edema. GC-MS analysis was carried for the determination of ani-inflammatory potential of fatty acids and other phytochemicals present in Yucca elephantipes roots. Among fifteen detected compounds trans-13-octadecenoic acid, n-hexadecanoic acid and 4-hydroxy benzoic acid were found as 84.21%, 5.21% and 2.17% respectively. Oxidative burst assay showed anti-inflammatory potential of Yucca elephantipes roots 74.58±0.32% with IC50 of 15.3±2.2µg/mL as compared to Ibuprofen with percentage of inhibition 73.20±0.17% and IC50 was 11.2±0.98µg/mL. Fortunately, less than 8g/kg dose of the Yucca elephantipes roots found safe in albino rats. Interestingly, in-vivo carrageen an induced paw edema method proved its anti-inflammatory potential at dose 100 and 200mg/kg in albino rats. Conclusively, 200mg/kg dose of Yucca elephantipes roots extract was optimized for 88.89±0.015% anti-inflammatory effect which can be considered most potent, safe and better alternative of synthetic drugs.

Yucca is one of the main sources of steroidal saponins, hence different extracts are commercialized for use as surfactant additives by beverage, animal feed, cosmetics or agricultural products. For a deeper understanding of the potential of the saponins that can be found in this genus, an exhaustive review of the structural characteristics, bioactivities and analytical methods that can be used with these compounds has been carried out, since there are no recent reviews on the matter. Thus, a total of 108 saponins from eight species of the genus Yucca have been described. Out of these, the bioactivity of 68 saponins derived from the isolation of Yucca or other genera has been evaluated. Regarding the evaluation and quality control of the saponins from this genus LC-MS technique is the most often used. Nevertheless, the development of methods for their routine analysis in commercial preparations are needed. Moreover, most of the studies found in the literature have been carried out on Y. schidigera extract, since is the most often used for commercial purposes. Only eight of the 50 species that belong to this genus have been studied, which clearly indicates that the identification of saponins present in Yucca genus is still an unresolved question.

A series of studies was carried out to determine the anticoccidial effects of a product derived from plant material sourced from Quillaja saponaria and Yucca schidigera. These plants are known to contain high concentrations of triterpenoid and steroidal saponins, substances that are known to display an array of biological effects. Battery tests involving individual Eimeria acervulina, Eimeria maxima, and Eimeria tenella infections and graded levels of a quillaja/yucca combination (QY) (0, 200, 250, and 300 ppm) were conducted. Body weight gain, coccidial lesion scores, and total oocysts per gram of feces (OPG) were used to evaluate anticoccidial effects. In addition, three floor pen trials evaluated the effects of 250 ppm QY in the control coccidial infections. The first pen trial measured the effects of 250 ppm QY, both alone and in combination with 66 ppm salinomycin (Sal), in a 2 3 2 factorial treatment arrangement. Two additional 42-day pen studies assessed the effects 250 ppm QY in birds vaccinated for coccidiosis. Data from the three battery trials indicated that at doses of 250 ppm QY or more, weight gain was improved, E. acervulina and E. tenella lesion scores were reduced, and OPG was lowered. In general, OPG was reduced by about 50% across all species by 250 and 300 ppm QY. Results of the pen study indicated that 250 ppm QY and Sal, when fed individually, reduced OPG and lesion scores and improved final performance. However, when QY and Sal were administered concurrently, further significant reductions in OPG occurred. The final performance of broilers vaccinated for coccidiosis was also improved at 250 ppm QY, as was OPG at both 21 and 28 days. Thus, at QY doses of 250 ppm or more, anticoccidial activity was evident but lacked the potency exhibited by many standard anticoccidials. When combined with either Sal or a live coccidiosis vaccine, QY improved the anticoccidial effects and performance of these anticoccidial methods.

Yucca schidigera Roezl (Mojave), a kind of ornamental plant belonging to the Yucca genus (Agavaceae), whose extract exhibits important roles in food, beverage, cosmetic and feed additives owing to its rich spirostanol saponins. To provide a comprehensive chemical profiling of the spirostanol saponins in it, this study was performed by using a multi-phase liquid chromatography method combining a reversed phase chromatography T3 column with a normal phase chromatography silica column for the separation and an ESI-Q-Exactive-Orbitrap MS in positive ion mode as the detector. By comparing the retention time and ion fragments with standards, thirty-one spirostanol saponins were identified. In addition, according to the summary of the chromatographic retention behaviors and the MS/MS cleavage patterns and biosynthetic pathway, another seventy-nine spirostanol saponins were speculatively identified, forty ones of which were potentially new ones. Moreover, ten novel spirostanol saponins (three pairs of (25R/S)-spirostanol saponin isomer mixtures) were targeted for isolation to verify the speculation. Then, the comprehensive chemical profiling of spirostanol saponins from Y. schidigera was reported here firstly.

The aim of this study was to determine whether curcumin and yucca extract addition in broiler feed improves growth, health, and meat quality, and to measure coccidiostatic and antimicrobial activity so as to enable replacement of conventional performance enhancers. We used 240 birds in four treatments: CN, basal feed with antibiotics and coccidiostatic drugs; CU, feed with 100 mg/kg of curcumin; YE, feed with 250 mg/kg of yucca extract; and CU + YE, feed with the combination of 100 mg curcumin/kg and 250 mg yucca extract/kg. A significant reduction in oocysts was observed in birds supplemented with combined additives (CU + YE) at days 37 compared to other treatments and at 42 days in relation to the CU treatment. At 42 days, the total bacterial counts for the CN and CU treatments were lower than the others. Birds fed the additive had lower numbers of leukocytes, lymphocytes, and heterophils than did those in the CN treatment. The highest levels of antioxidants in meat were observed in the treatments with the additives, together with lower levels of lipid peroxidation compared to the CN. The lowest protein oxidation was observed in the CU + YE treatment in relation to the other treatments. Lower total levels of saturated fatty acids (SFA) were observed in the CU treatment than in the CN. There were lower levels of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) in the meat of birds in the YE treatment in relation to the others. Higher levels of total polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) were observed in birds that consumed curcumin, individually and in combination with yucca extract. Taken together, the data suggest that curcumin and yucca extract are additives that can potentially replace conventional growth promoters; they improved bird health. Changes in the fatty acid profile of meat (increase in the percentage of omegas) are beneficial to the health of the consumer.

The current study was designed to evaluate the effect of Yucca schidigera extract (YSE) on the growth performance, intestinal antioxidant status, immune response, and tight junctions of mirror carp (Cyprinus carpio). A total of 450 mirror carp (45.21 ± 0.43 g) were fed diets supplemented with 0, 200, or 400 mg/kg YSE for 8 weeks. Compared with the control (0 mg/kg), the final body weight and weight gain rate were significantly higher in the 400 mg/kg YSE group (P < 0.05), and the serum ammonia concentration was significantly lower in both YSE groups (P < 0.05). Additionally, the total antioxidant capacity was significantly higher in the 400 mg/kg YSE group (P < 0.05), and the malondialdehyde content was significantly lower in both YSE groups (P < 0.05). Complement 3 and 4 contents were significantly higher in the 400 mg/kg YSE group (P < 0.05), and lysozyme was significantly higher in both YSE groups compared to the control group (P < 0.05). The relative mRNA levels of copper zinc superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase1a, and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 as well as transforming growth factor ß were significantly higher in both YSE supplemented groups compared to the control (P < 0.05), whereas the relative mRNA level of Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 was significantly lower in both YSE supplemented groups (P < 0.05). The relative mRNA levels of interleukin 1ß and interleukin 6 were significantly lower in the 400 mg/kg YSE supplemented group compared to the control (P < 0.05). Additionally, both YSE levels decreased the relative mRNA expression of tumour necrosis factor-α (P < 0.05). The relative mRNA levels of ZO-1 and claudin 11 were significantly higher in both YSE supplemented groups (P < 0.05), and the relative mRNA level of occludin was significantly higher in the 200 mg/kg YSE group than the control and 400 mg/kg YSE groups (P < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary supplementation with 400 mg/kg YSE improved the growth, intestinal antioxidant status, immune response, and tight junctions of mirror carp.

We found experimentally that the elasticity of sunflower oil-in-water emulsions (SFO-in-W) stabilized by Yucca Schidigera Roezl saponin extract, is by >50 times higher as compared to the elasticity of common emulsions. We revealed that strong specific interactions between the phytosterols from the non-purified oil and the saponins from the Yucca extract lead to the formation of nanostructured adsorption layers which are responsible for the very high elasticity of the oil-water interface and of the respective bulk emulsions. Remarkably, this extra high emulsion elasticity inhibits the emulsion syneresis even at 65 vol% of the oil drops - these emulsions remain homogeneous and stable even after 30 days of shelf-storage. These results demonstrate that the combination of saponin and phytosterols is a powerful new approach to structure oil-in-water emulsions with potential applications for formulating healthier functional food.

Yucca schidigera is mainly distributed in southwestern US and the northern desert of Mexico. Its extract is widely used as a food additive for its antimicrobial activity. However, this antimicrobial activity is subject to significant variability across production lots. Yucca extracts are natural products and their composition is affected by their cultivation area and weather. Manufacturer deal with natural products such as food additives pay particularly close attention to quality control. In the present study, NMR metabolomics methods were used to screen the antimicrobial activity of yucca extracts. Yucca extracts were subjected to principal component analysis (PCA) and categorized on a score plot of their 1H NMR spectral data according to their antimicrobial activity. Furthermore, hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) was also used to classify yucca extracts based on their antimicrobial activity. Classification using PCA and HCA was dependent upon saponin content, particularly that of schidigera-saponin A1 and D1, which was further confirmed by HPLC analysis of the yucca extracts. We demonstrated that NMR-based metabolomics is a potentially useful tool to use in combination with conventional quality control methods for yucca extracts used as food additives. We envisage this method as tool for initially screening the extracts prior to carrying out the officially recommended quality control tests.

The ethyl acetate fraction of the methanolic extract of Yucca schidigera Roezl ex Ortgies bark exhibited moderate acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) inhibitory activity (IC50 47.44 and 47.40 µg mL-1, respectively). Gel filtration on Sephadex LH-20 and further RP-C18 preparative HPLC of EtOAc fraction afforded 15 known and 3 new compounds, stereoisomers of larixinol. The structures of the isolated spirobiflavonoids 15, 26, and 29 were elucidated using 1D and 2D NMR and MS spectroscopic techniques. The relative configuration of isolated compounds was assigned based on coupling constants and ROESY (rotating-frame Overhauser spectroscopy) correlations along with applying the DP4+ probability method in case of ambiguous chiral centers. Determination of absolute configuration was performed by comparing calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra with experimental ones. Compounds 26 and 29, obtained in sufficient amounts, were evaluated for activities against AChE and BChE, and they showed a weak inhibition only towards AChE (IC50 294.18 µM for 26, and 655.18 µM for 29). Furthermore, molecular docking simulations were performed to investigate the possible binding modes of 26 and 29 with AChE.

This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the effects of Yucca schidigera powder (YSP) and inulin (IN) on protein fermentation metabolites (short-chain fatty acids [SCFA] and branched-chain fatty acids, phenolic and indolic compounds, biogenic amines, ammonia and pH) by using faecal inocula from dogs fed either a low (L) or a high (H) protein diet (crude protein 201 or 377 g/kg as fed). Four treatments for each diet were evaluated in an in vitro batch culture system over 24 h: (1) control with no addition of substrates; (2) 4 g YSP/l; (3) 5 g IN/l; (4) 4 g YSP/l in combination with 5 g IN/l of faecal culture of dogs fed Diet L or H. Several changes in fermentation metabolites were analysed. Samples incubated with the faecal inocula of dogs fed Diet L produced higher concentrations of total SCFA, propionate (p = 0.001), acetate (p ≤ 0.001), d-lactate (p = 0.041) and indole (p = 0.003), whereas pH (p = 0.004) was decreased. Supplementation of IN increased the content of putrescine, d- and l-lactate, total SCFA, acetate, propionate, n-butyrate (p ≤ 0.001) and n-valerate (p = 0.003), while i-valerate, indole and pH (p ≤ 0.001) were reduced. Ammonia was lower (p = 0.013) in samples with faecal inocula from dogs fed Diet H and further reduced by the addition of IN (p ≤ 0.001). Samples with faecal inocula from dogs fed Diet L had a fewer quotient of ammonia and total SCFA (p = 0.040). Supplementation of YSP (p = 0.021), IN (p ≤ 0.001) and YSP in combination with IN (p = 0.047) led to a higher reduction of the quotient of ammonia and total SCFA. In conclusion, dietary protein concentration and the supplementation of IN resulted in a stimulation of fermentation while YSP appeared to have only minor effects.

An experiment was conducted to determine if dietary Yucca-derived saponin supplementation could ameliorate the immune and growth responses of broilers during a mixed coccidian challenge. A total of 576 two-day-old male Ross 308 broiler chicks were housed in galvanized starter batteries and randomly assigned to 1 of 4 dietary treatment groups (12 replicate cages of 12 birds). Dietary treatments were corn-soybean meal-based and included 1) control diet + sham-inoculated (Ucon), 2) control diet + Eimeria oocyst challenge (Icon), 3) control diet with 250 mg/kg Yucca-derived saponin product + Eimeria oocyst challenge (ISap250), and 4) control diet with 500 mg/kg of Yucca-derived saponin product + Eimeria oocyst challenge (ISap500). On study day 14, birds were orally inoculated with 1.5 mL of tap water containing Eimeria acervulina, E. maxima, and E. tenella (100,000, 40,000, and 30,000 oocysts/dose, respectively), or sham-inoculated with 1.5 mL of tap water. Eimeria-challenged birds exhibited a reduction in growth compared with uninfected birds (P < 0.001); however, there were no detectable differences due to dietary treatment among Eimeria-challenged groups. Mucosal thickness in the jejunum was increased (P < 0.042) in all infected groups and there were no differences among infected groups; however, saponin supplementation included at 250 mg/kg was not significantly different from the uninfected birds. Lymphocytes as a percentage of total white blood cells were increased (P < 0.014) in all Eimeria-challenged groups at 7 D post-inoculation compared with uninfected birds, but birds supplemented at 250 mg/kg were not different from uninfected birds. Cecal and duodenal IFN-γ expression increased with infection when compared with sham-inoculated birds. Cecal and duodenal IL-1ß expression increased (P < 0.008 and P < 0.039) due to infection, and ISap250 and ISap500 treatments ameliorated IL-1ß expression to levels not different from sham-inoculated birds. These results suggest that saponin supplementation may provide some immunomodulatory effects during a mixed coccidian challenge as evidenced by lymphocyte responses, changes in intestinal structure, and alterations in cecal and duodenal inflammatory cytokine mRNA expression.

Dietary Yucca schidigera extract (YSE) could enhance immune function in broilers, which was attributed primarily to its saponin components. However, YSE also contains phenolic compounds which possess antioxidant ability. This study tested the effects of YSE on growth performance of broilers, its antioxidative enzyme activities and corresponding gene expressions in the small intestine. A total of 128 15-day-old broilers were randomly assigned to 4 treatments: corn-soya bean meal as the basal control diet or the basal diet containing either 100, 200 or 300 mg/kg of YSE. Each treatment consisted of four replicate pens with eight broilers per pen. The experiment lasted 28 days which was divided into a grower period (day: 15-28) and a finisher period (day: 29-42). On day 28 and day 42 body weight (BW), feed intake (FI) and feed conversion rate (FCR) were recorded. Duodenum, jejunum and ileum were collected to analyse superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities, malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations, total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and gene expressions of SOD, CAT, GPx. The results showed that during the grower period a diet including 100 mg/kg YSE improved CAT capacity in the ileum, tended to increase activities of GPx in the duodenum, and further showed enhancing tendencies in SOD and GPx abilities in ileum. Gene expressions of CAT, SOD and GPx in the ileum tended to upregulate at 100 mg/kg YSE level. In the finisher period and over the whole period, all YSE groups had a reduced FI compared to the control group without compromising BW; 100 and 200 mg/kg YSE significantly improved FCR. In conclusion, the improved growth performance of broilers during the finisher period may be due to enhanced antioxidative ability in the grower period with YSE supplementation. This study provided evidence of using YSE as an additive to enhance growth in broilers.

This experiment evaluated the effects of supplementing a saponin-containing feed ingredient, manufactured from purified extract of Yucca schidigera [Micro-Aid (MA); DPI Global; Porterville, CA], on performance, health, and physiological responses of receiving cattle. A total of 105 recently weaned Angus x Hereford calves (75 steers and 30 heifers), originating from eight cow-calf operations, were obtained from an auction facility on day -2 and road transported (800 km; 12 h) to the experimental facility. Immediately after arrival on day -1, shrunk BW was recorded and calves were grouped with free-choice access to grass hay, mineral supplement, and water. On day 0, calves were ranked by sex, source, and shrunk BW, and allocated to one of 21 pens (5 calves/pen; being one or two heifers within each pen). Pens were assigned to receive a total mixed ration (TMR) and one of three treatments (as-fed basis): (1) 1 g/calf daily of MA (M1; n = 7), (2) 2 g/calf daily of MA (M2; n = 7), or (3) no MA supplementation (CON; n = 7). Calves received the TMR to yield 15% (as-fed basis) orts, and treatments were top-dressed from days 0 to 59. Calves were assessed for bovine respiratory disease (BRD) signs and TMR intake was recorded for each pen daily. Calves were vaccinated against BRD pathogens on days 0 and 21. Final shrunk BW was recorded on day 60, and blood samples were collected on days 0, 2, 6, 10, 14, 21, 28, 34, 45, and 59. ADG was greater (P = 0.03) in M2 vs. M1 and CON (1.53, 1.42, and 1.42 kg/day, respectively), and similar (P = 0.95) between M1 and CON calves. No treatment effects were detected for TMR intake (P = 0.52), whereas feed efficiency was greater (P ≤ 0.05) in M2 vs. M1 and CON calves (213, 200, and 204 g/kg, respectively) and similar (P = 0.40) between M1 and CON calves. No treatment effects were detected (P = 0.39) for diagnosis of BRD signs. The number of antimicrobial treatments required upon BRD diagnosis was greater (P ≤ 0.01) in CON vs. M1 and M2 (1.40, 1.05, and 1.10 treatments, respectively), and similar (P = 0.60) between M1 and M2 calves. No other treatment effects were detected (P ≥ 0.23), including circulating concentrations of hormones and metabolites, serum antibody titers to BRD pathogens, and mRNA expression of innate immunity genes in whole blood. Collectively, results from this experiment suggest that MA supplementation at 2 g/animal daily enhances performance and response to BRD treatment in high-risk cattle during feedlot receiving.

The hydrocarbon pattern in the floral scent of Yucca species was found to comprise a group of unbranched, mid-chain alkanes, alkenes, and an alkadiene. In Y. reverchonii, highly dominant (Z)-8-heptadecene is accompanied by (6Z,9Z)-6,9-heptadecadiene and heptadecane as minor components and by traces of other saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons with similar chain length. Some of these volatiles proved to be perceived by the antennae of Tegeticula cassandra (pollinating seed-eater of Yucca) and Prodoxus decipiens (herbivore on Yucca). The possible biosynthesis of the compounds is discussed.

In order to find a simple, generic, efficient separation method for 25R/S-spirostanol saponin diastereomers, the liquid chromatographic retention behaviors of C12 carbonylation and C12 unsubstituted 25R/S-spirostanol saponin diastereomers on different stationary phases (C8, C18, C30 columns) and different mobile phases (MeOH-1% CH3COOH and CH3CN-1% CH3COOH) were investigated. A C30 column was firstly found to offer the highest efficiency for the separation of this kind of diastereomers than C8 and C18 columns. Meanwhile, the analysis results indicated that both CH3CN-1% CH3COOH and MeOH-1% CH3COOH eluate systems were selective for C12 unsubstituted 25R/S-spirostanol saponin diastereomers, while MeOH-1% CH3COOH possessed better selectivity for C12 carbonylation ones. Using the abovementioned analysis method, six pairs of 25R/S-spirostanol saponin diastereomers 1a⁻6a and 1b⁻6b from Yucca schidigera Roezl (Mojave) were isolated successfully by using HPLC on C30 column for the first time. Among them, three pairs were new ones, named as (25R)-Yucca spirostanoside E1 (1a), (25S)-Yucca spirostanoside E1 (1b), (25R)-Yucca spirostanoside E2 (2a), (25S)-Yucca spirostanoside E2 (2b), (25R)-Yucca spirostanoside E3 (3a), (25S)-Yucca spirostanoside E3 (3b), respectively. Moreover, 3a, 5a, 6a, 3b⁻6b showed strong inhibitory activities on the growth of SW620 cell lines with the IC50 values of 12.02⁻69.17 µM.

Mojave yucca (Yucca schidigera) is widely grown in the deserts. This herb is commercially used because it is rich in saponins and phenolic compounds with antioxidant effect. Y. schidigera or its derivatives are included as nontoxic food supplements, in cosmetics, and in the pharmaceutical industry. Saponins originated from Y. schidigera have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunostimulatory, growth promoter, hypocholesterolemic, and hypoglycemic effects. To date, the key role of Y. schidigera or its products in animal nutrition is to reduce the ammonia content in the atmosphere and fecal odor in poultry excreta. Mitigating ammonia by using this plant could be achieved by the modification of gut microbiota, enhancement in digestion, and absorption of nutrients, leading to a better growth and production performance of animals and poultry. Various methods were applied to mitigate the emission of odor from the litter by different strategies including biofilters, litter treatments, air scrubbers, neutralizing agents, windbreak walls, etc., but these techniques are expensive. This article provides a new insight to scientists and poultry breeders to use Y. schidigera plant or its products as inexpensive and safe sources of a feed supplement to overcome the ammonia and fecal odor problems, as well as reduce environmental pollution in poultry houses.
