ABSTRACT
In a conceptual framework the author differentiates Mental Health from Psychiatry and stresses its importance for the development of the human being and of the nations. On this basis, he proposes as a central point that the most important obstacle that Peru confronts to overcome its underdevelopment is rooted in its own population's mental health is rapidly deteriorating. He points out if any possibility of overcoming that obstacle exists it will depend of the capacity to gather and work together in a lifestyle in which the common goals be more important than the individual ones. Finally, although he points out that a more extense list exists he analyses four national problems that negatively affect Peru's development. These problems are of multifactorial etiology but with a great and distinct mental health component. Among them, he describes the economic crisi, the social crisis and violence, the crisis of solidary and responsability and the moral and spiritual crisis.
