ABSTRACT
The use of masks has become one of the symbols of the COVID-19 pandemic, from the year 2020, being considered one of the pillars of the set of non-pharmacological measures to reduce the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (WHO, 2022). Before the pandemic, there were still not a large number of studies on the effectiveness of the universal use of masks by the community to contain respiratory infections (Bundgaard et al., 2021; GOIÁS, 2020; GOIÁS, 2021). However, during the pandemic, the volume of evidence in favor of this measure increased considerably. Recent meta-analyses point to a significant reduction in disease transmission and mortality in countries that have adopted mandatory use of masks by the population (Talic et al., 2021; Wei et al., 2021).
