Introduction:
Systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) is one of the major problems of public health worldwide. Early diagnosis and poor adherence to drug treatment remain key challenges in controlling the disease. This study was designed to identify the prevalence of hypertension and associated factors in adults in the municipality of Tubarão, Santa Catarina. Methods:
Cross-sectional study of adults of both sexes living in Tubarão. Participants were submitted to an interview, anthropometry, and blood pressure measurement. Results:
A total of 367 adults were assessed and the prevalence of hypertension was 29.4%. Factors independently associated with hypertension were older age [OR = 2.32 (1.56-3.45) p <0.001], obesity [PR = 2.29 (1.80-2.90) p <0.001] and family history of SAH [OR = 0.58 (0.40-0.84) p <0.001]. Of the respondents, 12.8% were taking antihypertensive medication but had no satisfactory blood pressure control, and 15% had a diagnosis of SAH but did not use any medication. Conclusion:
The prevalence of hypertension in the study corroborates the figures from the Ministry of Health as compared with other national studies, indicating the need for tracking and control of blood pressure levels in the population to reduce the complications related to the disease (AU)
