RESUMO
O diabetes mellitus (DM) é um distúrbio metabólico decorrente do déficit de produção ou da absorção sistêmica do hormônio insulina. Pacientes diabéticos necessitam de um tratamento complexo, que exige um conjunto de cuidados que devem ser mantidos ao longo da vida. O estudo tem como objetivo discutir a importância da educação em saúde para melhorar o nível de conhecimento de pacientes com diabetes mellitus. A falta de conhecimento dos pacientes sobre a doença, suas consequências e sua prevenção constituem-se num grande desafio para os profissionais da área da saúde na construção de ações educativas. ABSTRACT
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease which results from body's failure to produce insulin or systemic absorption of insulin. Diabetic patients require complex treatment and precautions that should be maintained throughout life. This study aimed to discuss the importance of health education to improve the knowledge of patients with diabetes mellitus. Lack of patient knowledge about the disease, its prevention and its consequences constitute a major challenge for health professionals to implement educational activities. (AU)
