ABSTRACT
A descriptive and cross-sectional study of 139 admitted patients who underwent surgery due to traumatic perforations of colon and rectum was carried out in the Saturnino Lora Torres Teaching Provincial Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, in a 15 years period (from January, 1992 to December, 2006). Among the main results the most important were the following prevalence of the male sex in the second and third decades of life, prevalence of the stab wound as a main cause, prevalence of the transverse colon as the most affected organ and of the small bowel as most frequent localization of the lesion. The most commonly surgical procedure used was colostomy and although the primary closure didn't prevail as a surgical technique, it caused less complications (mainly septic wound) than other procedures. Ten patients died and their deaths were generally attributable to hemorrhagic shock in those with associated lesions
