RESUMEN
Un estudio retrospectivo de corte observacional se llevo a cabo en 200 niños malnutridos ingresados en el hospital de Letaba, Sudáfrica, durante un periodo de un año. Para el mismo se revisaron las historias clínicas de cada uno de ellos. Se encontró una alta incidencia de la malnutrición, afectando al sexo masculino (71,35 por ciento), la mayoría de los casos se presentaron en edades mayores de dos años (56 por ciento). Muchos de los niños críticamente enfermos acudieron al hospital con edemas y kwashiorkor (81 por ciento). En la evaluación clínica inicial se encontró hipoglucemia (50 por ciento) asociada a la hipotermia (45 por ciento). La infección mas frecuentemente asociada fue el SIDA (93 por ciento)(AU)
ABSTRACT
A retrospective cross-sectional study was carried out of 200 malnourished children admitted at Letaba Hospital, South Africa. High incidence affecting the male gender was found (71,35 per cent).The majority of malnourished children were older than 2 years (56 per cent). Most of the children with severe malnutrition were often seriously ill when they first presented to hospital with oedemas and kwashiorkor (81 per cent). Careful clinical evaluation was done, finding hypoglycaemia (50 per cent) also associated hypothermia (45 per cent). AIDS was the infection more frequently associated (93 per cent)(AU)
