RESUMEN

Se realizó una investigación descriptiva, transversal, para determinar el nivel de conocimientos sobre VIH/sida en las mujeres de edad fértil del municipio Libertador, Distrito Metropolitano de Caracas (DMC), durante el primer trimestre de 2009. Se aplicó una encuesta validada por la Organización Panamericana de la Salud, para explorar aspectos sociodemográficos y conocimientos sobre VIH/sida. El universo estuvo conformado por las 102 175 mujeres en edad fértil (15-49 años) del municipio, a partir del cual se calculó el tamaño de muestra con una confiabilidad 95 por ciento, y un 5 por ciento de error para el peor resultado aceptable, siendo 628. Dentro de las mujeres encuestadas, a pesar de que un gran número de ellas consideran tener conocimientos sobre VIH/sida, se comprueban algunos temas deficientes los conocimientos sobre agente causal del SIDA, características generales de la infección por VIH/sida, las vías de transmisión, identificación de medidas de prevención del VIH/sida verdaderas y efectivas. ABSTRACT

A descriptive, and cross-sectional investigation was realised to determine the level of knowledge on VIH/sida in the women of fertile age of the Liberating municipality, Metropolitan District of Caracas (DMC), during the first trimester of 2009. A survey validated by the OPS was applied, to explore sociodemographic aspects and knowledge on VIH/sida. The universe was conformed by the 102175 women in fertile age (15-49 years) of the municipality, from which the size of sample with a trustworthiness 95 percent calculated and 5 percent of error for the worse acceptable result, being 628. Within the survey women although a great number of these women considers to have knowledge on VIH/sida, some deficient subjects, the knowledge are verified on causal agent of AIDS, general characteristics of the infection by VIH/sida, the channels, identification of measures of prevention of the VIH/sida true and effective. The knowledge on VIH/sida was inadequate in the studied group(AU)
