ABSTRACT
It tells the story of Daniel Carrión's experiment as an object lesson for contemporary problems in human experimentation. He was acclaimed a martyr by many of his colleagues, whereas others castigated him as "naive young man" who "disgraced the profession". Ultimately, Carrión became the foremost hero of Peruvian medical history, but that fact should be set aside for the moment and Carrión's deed measured against current standards of the limits for just and ethical human experimentation.(AU)
