RESUMEN
FUNDAMENTO Y OBJETIVO.
ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE. The population of sub-Saharan immigrants is unknown by health care professionals. Their continuous increase makes it necessary to improve knowledge on their health conditions. This study aims to find out how sub-Saharan immigrants view their health condition and their main health problems during the first few years following their arrival in Spain. PATIENTS AND METHODS. Cross-sectional descriptive survey carried out in sub-Saharan immigrants over 18 years who have visited two "health and social centers for immigrants in the Madrid Community" between August 2003 and February 2004 and who reside in Madrid. RESULTS. Six hundred and six sub-Saharan immigrants, 55.45% of whom are men. Average age of 27 (SD 6.61). The 71.12% view their health condition positively. This positive opinion declines the longer they live in Spain. A total of 34.32% believe that their health is better here than in their country of origin. Their main health problems are breathing difficulties (22.68%), muscle and skeletal problems (14.85%) and gastrointestinal complaints (11.39%). The percentage of hospitalizations recorded was 6.27% and the number of accidents reported was 7.6%. The place where most accidents occurred was in the street (41.30%), followed by the work place (34.78%). CONCLUSIONS. Sub-Saharan immigrants view their health condition positively during the first few months following their arrival in Spain, but their positive condition view declines as they stay longer in our country. Their main health problems are similar to those of the native population and primarily comprise breathing difficulties, bone and muscle problems and digestive complaints
