ABSTRACT
Persons with psychiatric diagnosis smoke more quantity and more frequently than the general population. It is generally found that the smoking habit has twice the prevalence among psychiatric patients. Studies of psychiatric comorbidity in the smoking habit frequently do not include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) since this is understood to be a disorder limited to childhood. In those studies that first contemplated ADHD, the high prevalence of the smoking habit associated was detected. Currently, it is considered that ADHD symptoms are a risk factor for smoking habit. One of the pharmacological treatments used most for ADHD is methylphenidate, an inhibitor of dopamine (DA) reuptake and norepinephrine (noradrenaline, NA). However, ADHD in the adult is underdiagnosed and currently rarely receives pharmacological treatment. In this work, the clinical characteristics of ADHD in the smoking habit are briefly analyzed as well as the current knowledge on the relationship between them. Afterwards, the recent literature on the study of ADHD and smoking habit is reviewed, testing the treatment with Methylphenidate and its derivates, together with the usual treatment for smoking cessation, in adult subjects diagnosed of ADHD (AU)
