RESUMO
Durante o período de sete anos (janeiro de 1986 a dezembro de 1992) foram internados no CTI-Pediátrico do hospital Universitário Säo Vicente de Paulo 1.600 recém-nascidos, dos quais 1110 tinham algum distúrbio respiratório como causa básica da internaçäo. O achado de 475 (42,8 por cento) casos de membrana hialina alerta no sentido de establecer o diagnóstico precoce dessa importante entidade patológica. O correto diagnóstico e em tempo hábil permite reduzir os índices de morbi-mortalidade, bem como o tempo de internaçäo hospitalar, determinando menores gastos para a instituiçäo previdenciária
