RESUMO
Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo avaliar o Programa de Agentes Comunitários de Saúde (PACS), no estado da Bahia, como parte de uma investigaçäo levada a cabo em todo o Nordeste. Foram pesquisadas 564 famílias distribuídas em 12 municípios do estado onde o PACS estava implantado, as quais foram selecionadas através de técnica de amostragem por conglomerado. Também foram entrevistados os instrutores/supervisores dos agentes comunitários de saúde (ACS) destes municípios. A análise de indicadores referentes à utilizaçäo de serviços de saúde, controle da diarréia, conhecimento dos ACS pela populaçäo, atividades e avaliaçäo do trabalho dos agentes pelos usuários evidenciam uma grande penetraçäo dos mesmos junto à populaçäo das áreas por eles cobertas. As atividades desenvolvidas pelos ACS mais referidas pelos usuários foram vacinaçäo e manejo da diarréia. A análise dos encaminhamentos efetuados sugeriu que os ACS têm cumprido a funçäo de elo de ligaçäo entre populaçäo e serviços de saúde
