ABSTRACT
To compare the chest wall mobility between patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)and healthy controls by the measuring chest wall circunference using a measuring tape, and also to investigate the association between chest wall mobility and inspiratory capacity.

Methods:

In a cross-sectional study, 13 patients with COPD (post-bronchodilator FEV1 = 43.8 ± 14.9, %p) and 13 controls were included. All of participants were submitted to spirometry to characterize the sample and to determine the inspiratory capacity, and to chest wall mobility measurements twice, at the levels of the axillary, xiphisternal and abdominal regions.

Results:

The main results were that patients with COPD presented with reduced chest wall mobility at xiphisternal and abdominal levels as compared to controls; inspiratory capacity was not associated with chest wall mobility in both groups, despite it was closely related to measurements taken at the abdominal level of patients group.

Conclusion:

In summary, our data are consistent with those which indicated that abnormalities of the chest wall motion are present inmoderate-to-severe COPD patients, despite of using a cloth tape measurement to its determined. Although there was a tendency in the association between inspiratory capacity and the mobility at the abdominal level of COPD patients, chest wall mobility did not correlate with pulmonary function for both groups.
