RESUMO
JUSTIFICATIVA E OBJETIVOS:
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES:
To evaluate the characteristics of the use of tobacco in a sample of individuals in the city of Braço do Norte and compare smokers and nonsmokers on individual aspects, and cultural history.METHOD:
We interviewed 91 people, divided into smokers and nonsmokers. The sample was chosen randomly, and matched to gender and age. The data were entered into the software Epidata 3.1 and statistical analysis in EpiInfo 6.04 software. The associations were made by Chi-square, t Student or Kruskal-Wallis tests, when appropriated, followed by multivariate analysis using logistic regression.RESULTS:
Risk factors independently and strongly associated with smoking in logistic regression were intake of alcohol (ORaj = 6.79), family history of smoking (ORaj = 17.72) and fellow smoker (ORaj = 6.05).CONCLUSION:
This study found relationship between smoking and non-Caucasian race, people with family income below four minimum wages, concomitant intake of alcohol, and positive correlation with family history positive for smoking, and living with a smoker partner.
