ABSTRACT

Introduction:

The forest fires in the Brazilian Amazon region have been serious an ambient problem. Few studies relate its effect to the health of the displayed populations. To know the behavior of the respiratory diseases in the Amazon region makes possible subsidies for the decision taking and implantation of action and services in health and environment.

Objective:

To analyze the relation between the monthly fires focuses and outpatient assistance for respiratory diseases, infection of the superior and inferior aerial ways and asthma in children in the city of Porto Velho, Rondônia, Brazil, period 2005 to 2008, considering the meteorological conditions as changeable of control.

Methodology:

This is a descriptive study of the type of ecological and time series. They had been worked given referring to the monthly outpatient assistance for respiratory diseases and causes in children divide by age and residents in the city, as well as registers on the focus of fires detected by satellite and metereological conditions for control. The health data had been gotten of the registers of outpatient assistance supplied by the Medical Center for children Cosme and Damião. The detention of the fires focuses and climatic conditions if gave through the public bases supplied by the National Institute of Space Research - INPE and for the International Organization of Meteorology - OGIMET for the period between January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2008.

Results:

The respiratory diseases (RDs) had been the first cause of outpatient assistance in children, what it represented 41% of all the consultations registered in the analyzed period. Infections of the superior and inferior aerial ways and asthma had presented high ratios with 55, 30 and 11% of the registers, respectively.
