Introduction:
Patellofemoral syndrome (PFS) conservative treatment is commonly based on the prescriptior strengthening exercises; however, the effects of these exercises are not well documented. Objective:
To evaluate the effects of a therapeutic intervention based on isotonic squat associated with isometric hip adduction in participants with PFS.Methods:
Knee function, using Lysholm scoring scale and step test, was evaluated in 12 participants with PFS. The evaluation of torque peak was performed using an isokinetic dynamometer (Cybex Norm®) at two angular velocities, 60 and 180o/sec. To assess knee alignment, inter-malleolar or inter-condylar distance was measured. All participants performed seven weeks of isotonic squat associated with isometric hip adduction and visual analogue scale was applied before and after intervention. Results:
All variables showed statistically significant difference after the therapeutic intervention (Lysholm scoring scale before 67.4±10.9, after 81.4±10.9, p=0.0001; right lower limbstep test before 27.1±5.6 complete step-ups, after 33.4±6.1, p=0.0004; left lower limb step test before 24.1±8.7 complete step-ups, after 32.7±5.2, p=O.0033; flexor peak torque at 60o/sec before 61.9±10 Nm, after 69.2±11.9, p=O.0007; extensor peak torque at 60o/sec before 93.8±17 Nm, after 100.9±16.2, p=O.0052; flexor peak torqueat 180o/sec before 43±9.1 Nm, after 50.3±12, p=O.0001; extensor peak torque at 180o/sec before 63.5±8.2 Nm, after 68.7±8.3, p=O.0094; knee pain intensity before 2.36±1.47 em, after O.08±O.14, p=O.003).Conclusion:
The therapeutic intervention proposed can be applied to improve function and torque of PFS patients, and reduce its main symptom, the pain.
