ABSTRACT
Despite its importance, the cardiorespiratory fitness assessment in older adults is difficult due to the clinical and functional conditions of this population. More affordable alternatives that enable this evaluation without performing exercise testing would be important. Many of them include the Physical Activity Rating (PA-R) scale as a tool to detect the physical activity level. The present study aimed to verify the criterion-related validity of the Portuguese version of PA-R and its measurement equivalence to the original version. The sample was composed of 98 elderly (43 women), between the ages of 60 and 91 years, attended by the Elderly Care Center of the Open University of the Third Age (UNATI-UERJ). After completing the scale, the scores were correlated to the VO2peak assessed during a supervised maximal exercise test using an electromagnetically braked cycloergometer. The results found (r=0.61 to the whole sample; 0.59 to men; 0.70 to women) suggested the scale validity and they were very similar to those obtained by the original version which indicates the measurement equivalence. It is recommended the use of the PA-R in older adults. However, it is necessary the development of new studies in different ages to generalize the results.
