A incidência da Aids tem aumentado entre os idosos. Este aumento pode estar relacionado à carência de conhecimento sobre a doença. O estudo identificou o conhecimento a respeito da Aids, referido por idosos inscritos em programa de educação permanente. A coleta dos dados foi feita por meio de entrevista. Apenas 6,7% afirmou ser a Aids uma - doença que afeta o sistema imunológico ; 47,3% identificaram corretamente as formas de transmissão; 56,9% referiram o uso do preservativo para prevenção da Aids e 64% identificaram o HIV como agente etiológico. Dentre os idosos, 88,5% não se consideraram sob risco para contrair a doença; 66,6% mencionaram existir tratamento e 66,7% negaram a possibilidade de cura. Urge a implementação de ações dirigidas a idosos, no que se refere às doenças sexualmente transmissíveis e à Aids, em virtude do avanço da epidemia neste segmento etário.
ABSTRACT
AIDS incidence has increased among elderly. This increase can be related to lack of knowledge about this disease. This study aimed to identify knowledge about AIDS of elderly enrolled on a permanent education program. Data were obtained through an interview. Only 6.7% of interviewed elderly recognized AIDS as the ?disease that affects the immunologic system?; 47.3% correctly identified the transmission patterns; 56.9% related the use the condom for AIDS prevention and 64% identified HIV as the etiologic agent. Amongst the aged ones, 88.5% did not considered themselves under risk to contract the disease; 66.6% mentioned the existence of treatment and 66.7% denied the possibility of cure. There is urgency to implement actions, focusing the aged group, about sexually transmissible diseases and AIDS, in virtue of theepidemic advance within this aging segment.
