Evaluación sonográfica del timo en niños sanos: Estudio preliminar / Sonographic evaluation of the thymus in sound children: Preliminary study

RESUMEN

Aunque la ecografía tímica ya ha sido utilizada con éxito en Cuba, los valores de las dimensiones tímicas en niños sanos, no han sido publicadas. Es por ello que se estudiaron un total de 122 niños, con ningún signo evidente desde los primeros meses hasta los 6 años de edad de uno y otro sexos, valorados nutricionalmente como eutróficos, provenientes del área de salud del municipio Arroyo Naranjo. Se calculó el área de la sección ecográfica longitudinal de ambos lóbulos tímicos. Se agruparon los pacientes en 6 grupos. No se encontraron en las dimensiones de ambos lóbulos tímicos, ni tampoco entre los sexos. Se observó un aumento de la medida de profundidad y el volumen de la glándula a medida que transcurre la edad. El área tímica total promedio fue de 1 218 ± 207,4 mm2 y el volumen total de 25 273 mm3. La técnica empleada fue reproducible, fácil y económica y los valores obtenidos de las dimensiones tímicas, permiten la utilización de esta prueba en otros centros pediátricos del país en el escrutinio inicial de la integridad del sistema inmune y en el seguimiento evolutivo después del uso de la inmunoterapia.

ABSTRACT

Even though thymus echography has already been successfully used in Cuba, the values of the thymus dimensions in sound children have not been published. That's why, a total of 122 children of both sexes from the health area of Arroyo Naranjo municipality with no evident sign from the first months of age until the age of 6 that were nutritionally evaluated as eutrophic were studied. The area of the longitudinal ecographic section of both thymic lobes was calculated. Patients were divided into 6 groups. It was observed an increase of the depth measure and of the gland volume with age. The average total thymic area was of 1 218 ± 207.4 mm2 and the total volume was 25 273 m3. The technique used was reproducible, easy and economic. The values of the thymic dimensions obtained that were obtained allow the application of this test in other pediatric centers of the country for the initial screening of the immune system's integrity and in the evolutive follow-up after using immunotherapy.
