RESUMEN

Este artículo se centra en las principales características del árbol de ackee y las propiedades nutricionales y medicinales de su fruto. El ackee se utiliza como antiparasitario, para combatir la disenteria, la conjuntivitis oftálmica y dolores de cabeza. Debido a su importante valor nutricional y medicinal hace parte de la canasta familiar de Jamaica, país caribeno con características geográficas y climáticas similares a de la region Caribe colombiana. Se infiere, por ello, que el ackee es un árbol cuyo cultivo puede ser desarrollado en el Caribe colombiano con el principal propósito de mejorar las condiciones de desnutrición de sus habitantes.

ABSTRACT

This essay concerns the main characteristics of the Ackee tree and the nutritional and medicinal properties of its fruit. The Ackee has been used as an antiparasitic, and has also been used to attack dysentery, ophthalmic conjunctivitis and headaches. Due to its important nutritional and medicinal value, the Ackee is part of the consumer basket of Jamaica, a Caribbean country with growing conditions similar to those existing in the Colombian Caribbean. The Ackee tree could be grown in the Colombian Caribbean with the main purpose of improving the state of malnutrition of its inhabitants.
