Estudos clínicos com plantas medicinais no tratamento de afecções bucais: uma revisão de literatura / Clinical study using medicinal plants for the treatment of oral diseases

RESUMO
O objetivo deste trabalho foi pesquisar, na literatura, estudos clínicos com plantas medicinais no tratamento de afecções bucais. Tais estudos foram selecionados através das bases de dados MedLine, Lilacs, Scielo e BBO, no período de dezembro de 2010 a março de 2011. Durante a busca, foram encontrados 12 estudos. Neles, os autores avaliaram a ação das plantas medicinais calêndula, babosa, romã, plântago, malva, sálvia, alecrim pimenta, camomila, equinácea, mirra, hortelã pimenta e rânia do Pará, sobre afecções como periodontite, candidose associada ao uso de prótese, amigdalite, aftose, estomatite e gengivite. A maioria dos estudos clínicos foi feita com romã, seguidos por estudos com babosa. Em 10 estudos foram obtidos resultados satisfatórios. Não obstante, estudos clínicos em Odontologia, sobre a ação das plantas medicinais em humanos, publicados nas bases de dados supracitadas, ainda são escassos.
ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to research in literature clinical studies with medicinal plants in the treatment of oral diseases. These studies were selected through the databases Medline, Lilacs, Scielo and BBO from December 2010 to March 2011. During the search 12 studies were found. The authors evaluated the action of medicinal plants calendula, aloe vera, pomegranate, plantain, mallow, sage, spicy rosemary, chamomile, echinacea, myrrh, peppermint and Rania of Pará on diseases as periodontitis, candidosis associated with the use of prosthesis, tonsillitis, oral ulcers, stomatitis and gingivitis. Most of the studies were about pomegranate, followed by studies with aloe vera. The results were satisfactory in 10 studies. However, clinical studies in Dentistry on the action of medicinal plants in humans published in the databases above are still scarce.
