El papel de los medios masivos de información en materia de salud / The role of the mass media in the field of health

RESUMEN

Se destaca el poderío de los medios masivos de información en el marco higiénico social contemporáneo. A través de cinco ejemplos se ilustran sus potencialidades y capacidad de contribuir decisivamente al cumplimiento de los propósitos de la salud pública, y se muestra cómo, a su vez, pueden producir graves perjuicios al propio sistema de salud y a la sociedad. A modo de conclusión se enumeran y comentan las amenazas fundamentales que se identifican asociadas al empleo de tales recursos al servicio de la comunicación, y se enfatiza en la necesidad de incrementar la cultura científica tanto de los periodistas como de quienes constituyen sus fuentes informativas

ABSTRACT

The power of the massive information media in the contemporary sanitary and social context was emphasized. Through five examples, the potentialities and capabilities of the mass media to decisively contributing to the fulfilment of the public health goals were illustrated; but at the same time, the serious damages to the health system and the society were shown. The paper concluded by listing and commenting on the fundamental threats linked to the use of those media and by emphasizing the need to raise the scientific culture of both the journalists and those who provide them with health information
