ABSTRACT
Dengue is among the most important tropical diseases in terms of Public Health implications. It is widely distributed worldwide and has occurred in most American countries, particularly since 1975. Four strains of the causative virus are known, DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3 and DEN-4. The first three are present in Brazil. Currently, dengue is a challenging endemic disease, particularly as its prevention is affected by many social issues as well as by economic inequality. In addition, lack of prevention increases the vulnerability to the infection and increases the disease?s index. Thus, an epidemiological study of the knowledge about dengue amongst the residents of Barreiras, a town in the Brazilian state of Bahia, was carried out. The study attempted to identify the level of knowledge about dengue and its relation to socio - environmental settings, with a view of identifying measures for disease prevention at the community level. Results of the study pointed to the need of public health policies directed at basic sanitation and infrastructure. The need of work to increase awareness through health education, leading to attitude change amongst the population to eliminate breeding spots of the vector Aedes aegypti would also go a long way to ensure effective prevention and control of dengue.
