RESUMO
JUSTIFICATIVA E

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND AND

OBJECTIVES:

Urban violence has grown exponentially in the world and, besides the social impact, there is also emotional impact involved. The objective of this study was to identify the symptoms and signs of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in victims of violence and their associations with individual and crime-related factors.

METHOD:

We conducted a cross-sectional study. Data were collected from the Information System for Notifiable Diseases (SINAN)of the 20th Regional Department of Health of the State of Santa Catarina for domestic, sexual or other violence, between January 2009 and July 2011. Male and female victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and other forms of violence, over 18 years, were included in the survey. Self-inflicted violence and violence experienced less than four weeks before were exclusion criteria. The PTSD Checklist--Civilian Version was administered to a group of victims of violence in order to identify symptoms and signs suggestive of PTSD.

RESULTS:

Eighty-nine victims of violence participated in the study, with symptoms and signs suggestive of PTSD in 49.4% of the respondents. Most victims were young women, and 89.9% had suffered physical abuse. The continuing violence was positively associated with the presence of criterion C (p = 0.04) and D (p = 0.03), of the DSM-IV criteria. Criterion D also showed atendency of association with sexual violence (p = 0.05).

CONCLUSION:

The high prevalence of violence-related PTSD serves as an important warning for public health and social welfare.
