Percepção dos profissionais que atuam numa instituição de longa permanência para idosos sobre a morte e o morrer / The perception of death and dying of professionals working in a long-term care institution for the elderly

RESUMO

O envelhecimento populacional e a falta de cuidadores resultam em uma crescente busca pela institucionalização. A convivência com a morte faz parte do cotidiano de trabalho dos profissionais de saúde, causando-lhes sobrecarga emocional. Objetivou-se conhecer a vivência dos profissionais de saúde atuantes em uma instituição de longa permanência para idosos diante do processo de morrer e de morte. Utilizaram-se os referenciais da Teoria Fundamentada nos Dados e do Interacionismo Simbólico, respectivamente, metodológico e teórico. Foram entrevistados 20 profissionais de saúde, com formação variada. O fenômeno central dos resultados foi reconstruindo formas para lidar com as circunstâncias de morrer e morte. Originaram-se as categorias compreendendo a morte como parte da existência humana; buscando adquirir conhecimentos para enfrentar os episódios de morrer e morte; refletindo sobre a própria morte. Sem um terreno propício para o desenvolvimento sistemático do tema, as interações entre os trabalhadores com a troca de experiências sobre morte e morrer permanecerá restrita a um nível subjetivo. Na conclusão, é enfatizada a importância de uma mudança (metamorfose) no contexto institucional e na educação em saúde, com foco mais específico na tanatologia.

ABSTRACT

Population aging and a shortage of caregivers result in a growing demand for institutionalization, and finitude is one the reflections that permeates aging. Living with death is part of the daily routine of health professionals resulting in emotional overload. This study sought to ascertain the experiences of the process of dying and death of health care professionals in a long-stay institution for the elderly. Methodological and theoretical Grounded Data Theory and Symbolic Interaction were used, respectively. Twenty health professionals from varied backgrounds were interviewed. The core topic of the results was reconstructing ways to deal with the circumstances of dying and death. This led to the following categories seeing death as part of human existence; seeking to acquire knowledge to handle cases of death and dying; reflecting on one's own death. Without fertile ground for the systematic examination of the topic, the interaction among workers about the exchange of experiences on death and dying remain restricted to the subjective level. In the conclusion, the importance of a metamorphosis in the institutional context and in health education, with more specific focus on thanatology, is emphasized.
