ABSTRACT
The objective of the research was to verify the maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximum expiratory pressure (MEP) in patients undergoing the cardiac surgery in a hospital in the city of Fortaleza/CE. The research had a descriptive, interventional and longitudinal character. Twenty individuals submitted to cardiac surgery composed the sample. The manovacuometry was carried through in pre-undergoing patients, immediate postoperative (IPO), 3rd and 5th postoperative (PO). The comparison of results between groups was performed by paired Student t test at 5% significance level (p<0.05). The average age of the patients was of 53.6 ? 17.05 years with a higher prevalence of 55% males (n=11). The average values of MIP and MEP were significantly reduced (p <0.05) in the IPO, 3rd and 5th PO day when compared to the preoperative period. In the 3rd PO, the average MIP kept significantly reduced and MEP did not significant increase when compared to IPO. In the 5th PO, the average MIP and MEP values were not statistically significant as compared to the 3rd PO. The respiratory muscular force suffers alterations in the postoperative of cardiac surgeries, and manovacuometry is an efficient method to predict if such alterations could or not bring important respiratory complications to these patients.
